³³ They answered Him, ^(A)“We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?”

⁹ and do not think to say to yourselves, ^(A)‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

³⁹ They answered and said to Him, ^(A)“Abraham is our father.”

Jesus said to them, ^(B)“If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.

Abraham’s Seed and Satan’s

³⁷ “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but ^(A)you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.

⁴ There were also those who said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our lands and vineyards. ⁵ Yet now ^(A)our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we ^(B)are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards.”

⁶ And I became very angry when I heard their outcry and these words. ⁷ After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them, ^(C)“Each of you is ^[a]exacting usury from his brother.” So I ^[b]called a great assembly against them. ⁸ And I said to them, “According to our ability we have ^(D)redeemed our Jewish brethren who were sold to the nations. Now indeed, will you even sell your brethren? Or should they be sold to us?”

Then they were silenced and found nothing to say.

¹³ Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly ^(A)that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and ^(B)they will afflict them four hundred years.

Behold Your Mother

^25 (A)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of ^(B)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁴ “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and ^(A)cool my tongue; for I ^(B)am tormented in this flame.’ ²⁵ But Abraham said, ‘Son, ^(C)remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. ²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’
