Division among the People
40 When they heard these words, some in the crowd said, “This is really the prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Messiah.”[a] But some asked, “Surely the Messiah[b] does not come from Galilee, does he?(A) 42 Has not the scripture said that the Messiah[c] is descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”(B) 43 So there was a division in the crowd because of him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is (A)the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the [a]Christ.” But others were saying, “(B)Surely the [b]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (C)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (D)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (E)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
