The People Are Divided over Jesus
40 When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, “This truly is the Prophet.”(A) 41 Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does he? 42 Doesn’t the Scripture(B) say that the Messiah comes from David’s(C) offspring[a] and from the town of Bethlehem,(D) where David lived?” 43 So the crowd was divided(E) because of him. 44 Some of them wanted to seize him,(F) but no one laid hands on him.

40 Then, when they[a] heard these words, some from the crowd began to say,[b] “This man is truly the Prophet!” 41 Others were saying, “This man is the Christ!” But others were saying, “No, for the Christ does not come from Galilee, does he?[c] 42 Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there was a division in the crowd because of him. 44 And some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.
