32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent (A)officers to (B)arrest Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, (C)For a little while longer I am going to be with you, and then (D)I am going to Him who sent Me. 34 (E)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 (F)The Jews then said to one another, “(G)Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He does not intend to go to (H)the Dispersion among (I)the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, does He? 36 What is this statement that He said, (J)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 Now on (K)the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (L)If anyone is thirsty, [a]let him come to Me and drink. 38 The one who believes in Me, (M)as the Scripture said, ‘[b]From his innermost being will flow rivers of (N)living water.’” 39 But this He said (O)in reference to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for (P)the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (Q)glorified.

People’s Division over Jesus

40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is (R)the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the [c]Christ.” But others were saying, “(S)Surely the [d]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (T)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (U)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (V)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The (W)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The (X)officers answered, “(Y)Never has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “(Z)You have not been led astray too, have you? 48 (AA)Not one of (AB)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 (AC)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 (AD)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “(AE)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 [[[e]And everyone went to his home.

Jesus and the Religious Leaders

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. 33 Then Jesus said [a]to them, (A)“I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I (B)go to Him who sent Me. 34 You (C)will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you (D)cannot come.”

35 Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to (E)the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

37 (F)On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (G)“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 (H)He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, (I)out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 (J)But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [b]believing in Him would receive; for the [c]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (K)glorified.

Who Is He?

40 Therefore [d]many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is (L)the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is (M)the Christ.”

But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 (N)Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, (O)where David was?” 43 So (P)there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now (Q)some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Rejected by the Authorities

45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

46 The officers answered, (R)“No man ever spoke like this Man!”

47 Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

50 Nicodemus (S)(he who came to [e]Jesus [f]by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 (T)“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for (U)no prophet [g]has arisen out of Galilee.”
