Jesus Teaches at the Feast
7 After these things Jesus (A)was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because (B)the Jews (C)were seeking to kill Him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, (D)the Feast of Booths, was near. 3 So His (E)brothers said to Him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your (F)disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret [a]when he himself is striving to be known publicly. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For not even His (G)brothers believed in Him. 6 So Jesus *said to them, “(H)My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready. 7 (I)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that (J)its deeds are evil. 8 Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, because (K)My time has not yet fully arrived.” 9 Now having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.
10 But when His (L)brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret. 11 (M)So the Jews (N)were looking for Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” 12 And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: (O)some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people.” 13 However, no one was speaking openly about Him, for (P)fear of [b]the Jews.
14 But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple area, and began to (Q)teach. 15 (R)The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this Man (S)become learned, not having been educated?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, “(T)My teaching is not My own, but His who sent Me. 17 (U)If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God, or I am speaking from Myself. 18 The one who speaks from himself (V)seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
19 “(W)Did Moses not give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why are you (X)seeking to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “(Y)You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill You?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did (Z)one [c]deed, and you all are astonished. 22 For this reason (AA)Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from (AB)the fathers), and even on a Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 (AC)If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry at Me because I made an entire man well on a Sabbath? 24 Do not (AD)judge by the outward appearance, but judge [d]with righteous judgment.”
25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this Man not the one whom they are seeking to kill? 26 And yet look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. (AE)The rulers do not really know that this is the [e]Christ, do they? 27 However, (AF)we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, (AG)teaching and saying, “(AH)You both know Me and you know where I am from; and (AI)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 (AJ)I do know Him, because (AK)I am from Him, and (AL)He sent Me.” 30 So they (AM)were seeking to arrest Him; and yet no one laid a hand on Him, because His (AN)hour had not yet come. 31 But (AO)many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “(AP)When the [f]Christ comes, He will not perform more [g](AQ)signs than those which this man has done, will He?”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent (AR)officers to (AS)arrest Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, “(AT)For a little while longer I am going to be with you, and then (AU)I am going to Him who sent Me. 34 (AV)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 (AW)The Jews then said to one another, “(AX)Where does this Man intend to go that we will not find Him? He does not intend to go to (AY)the Dispersion among (AZ)the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, does He? 36 What is this statement that He said, ‘(BA)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”
37 Now on (BB)the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “(BC)If anyone is thirsty, [h]let him come to Me and drink. 38 The one who believes in Me, (BD)as the Scripture said, ‘[i]From his innermost being will flow rivers of (BE)living water.’” 39 But this He said (BF)in reference to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for (BG)the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (BH)glorified.
People’s Division over Jesus
40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is (BI)the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the [j]Christ.” But others were saying, “(BJ)Surely the [k]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (BK)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (BL)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (BM)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
45 The (BN)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The (BO)officers answered, “(BP)Never has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “(BQ)You have not been led astray too, have you? 48 (BR)Not one of (BS)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 (BT)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 “(BU)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “(BV)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 [[[l]And everyone went to his home.

7 Después de esto, Jesús andaba por Galilea(A), pues no deseaba andar por Judea porque los judíos(B) lo querían matar(C). 2 La fiesta de los judíos, la de los Tabernáculos(D), estaba cerca. 3 Por eso los hermanos de Jesús(E) le dijeron: «Sal de aquí, y vete a Judea para que también Tus discípulos(F) vean las obras que Tú haces. 4 Porque nadie hace nada en secreto cuando[a] procura ser conocido en público. Si haces estas cosas, muéstrate al mundo». 5 Porque ni aun Sus hermanos(G) creían en Él.
6 Entonces Jesús les dijo*: «Mi tiempo aún no ha llegado(H), pero el tiempo de ustedes es siempre oportuno. 7 El mundo no puede odiarlos a ustedes, pero me odia a Mí(I), porque Yo doy testimonio de él, que sus acciones son malas(J). 8 Suban ustedes a la fiesta; Yo no subo a esta fiesta porque Mi tiempo aún no se ha cumplido(K)».
9 Y habiéndoles dicho esto, se quedó en Galilea.
Jesús sube a la fiesta en secreto
10 Pero cuando Sus hermanos(L) subieron a la fiesta, entonces Jesús también subió; no abiertamente, sino en[b] secreto. 11 Por eso los judíos(M) lo buscaban en la fiesta(N) y decían: «¿Dónde está Ese?».
12 Y había mucha murmuración entre la gente acerca de Él. Unos decían: «Él es bueno». Otros decían: «No, al contrario, extravía a la gente(O)». 13 Sin embargo, nadie hablaba abiertamente de Él por miedo a los judíos(P).
Jesús enseña durante la fiesta
14 A la mitad de la fiesta, Jesús subió al templo y se puso a enseñar(Q). 15 Entonces los judíos(R) se maravillaban, diciendo: «¿Cómo puede Este saber de letras(S) sin haber estudiado?».
16 Jesús entonces les respondió: «Mi enseñanza(T)no es Mía, sino del que me envió. 17 Si alguno está dispuesto a hacer la voluntad de Dios, sabrá si Mi enseñanza es de Dios o si hablo de Mí mismo(U). 18 El que habla de sí mismo busca su propia gloria; pero Aquel que busca la gloria del que lo envió(V), Él es verdadero y no hay injusticia en Él. 19 ¿No les dio Moisés la ley(W), y sin embargo ninguno de ustedes la cumple[c]? ¿Por qué me quieren matar(X)?».
20 La multitud contestó: «¡Tienes un demonio(Y)! ¿Quién te quiere matar?». 21 Jesús les respondió: «Una sola obra hice(Z)y todos se admiran. 22 Por eso Moisés les ha dado la circuncisión(AA)(no porque sea de Moisés, sino de los padres(AB)), y en el día de reposo ustedes circuncidan al hombre. 23 Y si para no violar la ley de Moisés un hombre recibe la circuncisión aún en el día de reposo(AC), ¿por qué están enojados conmigo porque sané por completo a un hombre en el día de reposo? 24 No juzguen por la apariencia, sino juzguen con[d]juicio justo(AD)».
25 Entonces algunos de Jerusalén decían: «¿No es Este al que procuran matar? 26 Y vean, habla en público y no le dicen nada. ¿No será que en verdad los gobernantes(AE) reconocen que Este es el Cristo[e]? 27 Sin embargo, nosotros sabemos de dónde es Este; pero cuando venga el Cristo, nadie sabrá de dónde es(AF)».
28 Jesús entonces, mientras enseñaba(AG) en el templo, exclamó en alta voz: «Ustedes me conocen y saben de dónde soy(AH). Yo no he venido por decisión propia(AI), pero Aquel que me envió es verdadero, a quien ustedes no conocen. 29 Yo lo conozco(AJ), porque procedo de Él(AK), y Él me envió(AL)».
30 Procuraban, pues, prender a Jesús(AM); pero nadie le echó mano porque todavía no había llegado Su hora(AN). 31 Pero muchos de la multitud creyeron en Él(AO), y decían: «Cuando el Cristo(AP) venga, ¿acaso hará más señales[f](AQ) que las que Este ha hecho?».
32 Los fariseos oyeron a la multitud murmurando estas cosas acerca de Él. Entonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos enviaron guardias(AR) para que lo prendieran(AS). 33 Pero Jesús dijo: «Por un poco más de tiempo estoy con ustedes(AT); después voy a Aquel que me envió(AU). 34 Me buscarán y no me hallarán; y donde Yo esté, ustedes no pueden ir(AV)».
35 Decían entonces los judíos(AW) entre sí: «¿Adónde piensa irse Este(AX) que no lo podamos encontrar? ¿Será acaso que quiere irse a la dispersión(AY) entre los griegos(AZ) y enseñar a los griegos? 36 ¿Qué quiere decir esto que ha dicho: “Me buscarán y no me hallarán; y donde Yo esté, ustedes no podrán ir(BA)”?».
La gran invitación
37 En el último día, el gran día de la fiesta(BB), Jesús puesto en pie, exclamó en alta voz: «Si alguien tiene sed, que venga a Mí y beba[g](BC). 38 El que cree en Mí, como ha dicho la Escritura: “De lo más profundo de su ser[h]brotarán ríos de agua(BD)viva(BE)”». 39 Pero Él decía esto del Espíritu(BF), que los que habían creído en Él habían de recibir; porque el Espíritu no había sido dado todavía[i](BG), pues Jesús aún no había sido glorificado(BH).
40 Entonces algunos de la multitud, cuando oyeron estas palabras, decían: «Verdaderamente Este es el Profeta(BI)». 41 Otros decían: «Este es el Cristo[j]». Pero otros decían: «¿Acaso el Cristo ha de venir de Galilea(BJ)? 42 ¿No ha dicho la Escritura que el Cristo viene de la descendencia de David, y de Belén(BK), la aldea de donde era David?». 43 Así que surgió una división(BL) entre la multitud por causa de Él. 44 Y algunos de ellos querían prender a Jesús, pero nadie le echó mano(BM).
Los guardias confundidos
45 Entonces los guardias(BN) vinieron a los principales sacerdotes y fariseos, y estos les dijeron: «¿Por qué no lo trajeron?». 46 Los guardias(BO) respondieron: «¡Jamás hombre alguno ha hablado como este hombre habla(BP)!».
47 Entonces los fariseos les contestaron: «¿Es que también ustedes se han dejado engañar(BQ)? 48 ¿Acaso ha creído en Él alguien de los gobernantes(BR) o de los fariseos? 49 Pero esta multitud que no conoce de la ley, maldita es».
50 Nicodemo(BS), el que había venido a Jesús antes, y que era uno de ellos, les dijo*: 51 «¿Acaso juzga nuestra ley a un hombre a menos que le oiga primero(BT) y sepa lo que hace?». 52 Ellos le respondieron: «¿Es que tú también eres de Galilea(BU)? Investiga, y verás que ningún profeta sale de Galilea». 53 [k]Y cada uno se fue a su casa.

Jezus op het Loofhuttenfeest
7 Daarna trok Jezus rond door Galilea. Want Hij wilde niet door Judea rondreizen, omdat de Joodse leiders daar Hem wilden doden. 2 Het was bijna Loofhuttenfeest.[a] 3 Jezus' broers zeiden spottend tegen Hem: "Ga toch naar Judea. Want ook je leerlingen dáár moeten de geweldige dingen zien die Jij doet. 4 Want iemand die bekend wil worden, moet niet tegelijk proberen om niet op te vallen. Als Jij dan zo graag bijzondere dingen wil doen, zorg er dan voor dat alle mensen het horen en zien." 5 Want ook Jezus' broers geloofden Hem niet. 6 Jezus zei tegen hen: "Daar is het nog niet de tijd voor. Jullie kunnen doen wat jullie willen. 7 Jullie worden niet door de mensen gehaat. Maar Mij haten ze wel. Want Ik zeg tegen de mensen dat ze slechte dingen doen. 8 Gaan jullie maar naar het feest. Ik ga nu nog niet. Het is voor Mij nog niet de juiste tijd om erheen te gaan." 9 Daarna bleef Hij nog een poosje in Galilea. 10 Maar zijn broers vertrokken naar het feest.
Na een poosje ging Jezus Zelf ook. Maar voorzichtig, zodat de mensen het niet zouden merken. 11 De Joodse leiders zochten Hem op het feest. Ze zeiden: "Waar is Hij dan toch?" 12 En er werd veel maar voorzichtig over Hem gepraat. Sommige mensen zeiden: "Hij is goed." Maar anderen zeiden: "Nee, Hij leert de mensen verkeerde dingen." 13 Maar niemand durfde hardop te zeggen wat hij van Jezus vond. Want iedereen was bang voor de Joodse leiders.
14 Maar toen het feest al op de helft was, ging Jezus naar de tempel. Daar begon Hij les te geven. 15 De Joodse leiders waren heel verbaasd over Hem en zeiden tegen elkaar: "Hoe kan het dat deze Man zoveel van de Boeken weet, zonder dat Hij heeft gestudeerd?" 16 Jezus antwoordde: "Wat Ik zeg, weet Ik niet van Mijzelf. Ik weet het van Hem die Mij heeft gestuurd. 17 Mensen die ernaar verlangen om altijd te doen wat God wil, zullen weten of wat Ik zeg van God komt, of dat Ik het Zelf bedacht heb. 18 Iemand die zijn eigen ideeën brengt, wil graag zelf geprezen worden. Maar iemand die wil dat de persoon die hem heeft gestuurd, geprezen wordt, is eerlijk en heeft geen oneerlijke bedoelingen. 19 Mozes heeft jullie toch de wet gegeven? Toch doen jullie geen van allen wat de wet van Mozes zegt. Want waarom willen jullie Mij doden?" 20 De mensen zeiden: "U bent gek. Wie wil U dan doden?" 21 Jezus antwoordde: "Als Ik één ding doe, zijn jullie al boos. 22 Mozes heeft jullie gezegd dat jullie pasgeboren jongetjes moeten besnijden, zelfs als het de heilige rustdag is. Dat deden onze voorouders trouwens al lang vóórdat Mozes dat zei.[b] 23 Iemand mag dus op de heilige rustdag besneden worden, omdat dat moet van de wet van Mozes. Waarom zijn jullie dan boos op Mij, als Ik op de heilige rustdag iemand helemaal gezond maak? 24 Veroordeel iets niet onmiddellijk, maar denk er eerst eerlijk over na voordat jullie je mening geven."
25 Sommige Jeruzalemmers zeiden: "Dat is toch die Man die ze willen doden? 26 En moet je zien, nu is Hij daar zomaar aan het lesgeven en ze houden Hem niet tegen. Zouden onze leiders hebben begrepen dat Hij de Messias is? 27 Aan de andere kant: hoe zou Hij de Messias kunnen zijn? Want we weten waar deze Man vandaan komt. Maar volgens de Boeken zullen we niet weten waar de Messias vandaan komt." 28 Toen riep Jezus daar in de tempel uit: "Jullie kennen Mij en jullie weten waar Ik vandaan kom. Maar Ik ben niet voor Mijzelf gekomen. Iemand heeft Mij gestuurd, en Hem kennen jullie niet. Hij is één en al waarheid. 29 Maar Ik ken Hem wél, want Ik kom bij Hem vandaan. Hij heeft Mij gestuurd."
30 Toen probeerden ze Jezus gevangen te nemen. Maar niemand durfde Hem iets te doen, want het was daarvoor nog niet de juiste tijd.
31 Heel veel mensen gingen in Hem geloven. Ze zeiden: "Zou de Messias soms méér wonderen doen dan Hij?" 32 De Farizeeërs hoorden dat de mensen dit over Hem fluisterden. Daarom stuurden de leiders van de priesters en de Farizeeërs een aantal mannen van de tempelbewaking naar Hem toe. Zij moesten Hem gevangen nemen. 33 Jezus zei: "Ik ben nog maar korte tijd bij jullie. Daarna ga Ik terug naar Hem die Mij heeft gestuurd. 34 Dan zullen jullie Mij zoeken, maar niet vinden. Want waar Ik dan ben, kunnen jullie niet komen." 35 De Joden zeiden tegen elkaar: "Waar zou Hij dan heen gaan, dat we Hem niet zullen kunnen vinden? Zou Hij van plan zijn om naar de Joden in Griekenland te gaan en hén over al deze dingen te gaan lesgeven? 36 Wat bedoelt Hij dat we Hem zullen zoeken maar niet zullen kunnen vinden? En dat we niet kunnen komen waar Hij is?"
37 Op de laatste dag van het feest, de belangrijkste dag, stond Jezus op en riep: "Als je dorst hebt, moet je naar Mij toe komen en drinken! 38 Als je in Mij gelooft, zullen stromen van water dat leven geeft uit je binnenste stromen! Want dat is beloofd in de Boeken!"[c] 39 Met dit water bedoelde Hij de Heilige Geest. De mensen die in Hem zouden geloven, zouden de Heilige Geest krijgen. De Heilige Geest was er toen nog niet, omdat Jezus nog niet uit de dood was opgestaan en nog niet naar de hemel was teruggegaan.
40 Veel van de mensen die dit hoorden, zeiden: "Deze Man is beslist de profeet." 41 Anderen zeiden: "Hij is de Messias." Weer andere mensen zeiden: "De Messias komt toch niet uit Galilea? 42 De Boeken zeggen toch dat de Messias iemand uit de familie van koning David zal zijn en dat hij net als David in het dorp Betlehem zal worden geboren?" 43 Ze kregen er ruzie over. 44 En sommige mensen wilden Hem gevangen nemen, maar niemand durfde Hem iets te doen.
45 De mannen van de tempelbewaking gingen weer terug naar de leiders van de priesters en de Farizeeërs. Die vroegen hen: "Waarom hebben jullie Hem niet meegebracht?" 46 Ze antwoordden: "Nog nooit heeft iemand zulke bijzondere dingen gezegd als Hij!" 47 De Farizeeërs zeiden tegen hen: "Heeft Hij jullie ook al omgepraat? 48 Jullie leiders en de Farizeeërs geloven toch ook niet dat Hij de Messias is? 49 Alleen de gewone mensen geloven dat, doordat ze de wet van Mozes niet goed kennen. Vervloekt zijn ze!" 50 Nikodemus, die vroeger eens 's nachts naar Jezus was gekomen,[d] zei tegen hen: 51 "Volgens onze wet mag je iemand niet zomaar veroordelen. Eerst moet er goed uitgezocht worden wat er aan de hand is." 52 Ze antwoordden hem: "Kom jij soms ook uit Galilea? Zoek het maar op in de Boeken: uit Galilea zal geen profeet komen." 53 En ze gingen allemaal naar huis.

De Joden vierden dit feest om te denken aan de tocht van het volk Israël door de woestijn, toen de mensen in tenten woonden. Het was één van de drie grote feesten voor de Heer God. Het werd gevierd op de 15e dag van de zevende maand, aan het eind van de oogsttijd.
