Jesús va a la fiesta de las Enramadas
7 Algún tiempo después, Jesús andaba por Galilea. No tenía ningún interés en ir a Judea, porque allí los judíos buscaban la oportunidad para matarlo. 2 Faltaba poco tiempo para la fiesta judía de las Enramadas, 3 así que los hermanos de Jesús le dijeron:
—Deberías salir de aquí e ir a Judea, para que tus discípulos vean las obras que realizas, 4 porque nadie que quiera darse a conocer actúa en secreto. Ya que haces estas cosas, deja que el mundo te conozca.
5 Lo cierto es que ni siquiera sus hermanos creían en él. 6 Por eso Jesús les dijo:
—Para ustedes cualquier tiempo es bueno, pero el tiempo mío aún no ha llegado. 7 El mundo no tiene motivos para aborrecerlos; a mí, sin embargo, me aborrece porque yo testifico que sus obras son malas. 8 Suban ustedes a la fiesta. Yo no voy todavía[a] a esta fiesta porque mi tiempo aún no ha llegado.
9 Dicho esto, se quedó en Galilea. 10 Sin embargo, después de que sus hermanos se fueron a la fiesta, fue también él, no públicamente, sino en secreto. 11 Por eso las autoridades judías lo buscaban durante la fiesta, y decían: «¿Dónde se habrá metido?».
12 Entre la multitud corrían muchos rumores acerca de él. Unos decían: «Es una buena persona». Otros alegaban: «No, lo que pasa es que engaña a la gente». 13 Sin embargo, por temor a las autoridades judías nadie hablaba de él abiertamente.
Jesús enseña en la fiesta
14 Jesús esperó hasta la mitad de la fiesta para subir al Templo y comenzar a enseñar. 15 Los judíos se admiraban y decían: «¿De dónde sacó este tantos conocimientos sin haber estudiado?».
16 —Mi enseñanza no es mía —respondió Jesús—, sino del que me envió. 17 El que esté dispuesto a hacer la voluntad de Dios reconocerá si mi enseñanza proviene de Dios o si yo hablo por mi propia cuenta. 18 El que habla por cuenta propia busca su vanagloria; en cambio, el que busca glorificar al que lo envió es una persona íntegra y sin maldad. 19 ¿No les ha dado Moisés la Ley a ustedes? Sin embargo, ninguno de ustedes la cumple. ¿Por qué tratan entonces de matarme?
20 —Estás endemoniado —contestó la multitud—. ¿Quién quiere matarte?
21 Jesús les dijo:
—Hice una señal milagrosa y todos ustedes han quedado asombrados. 22 Por eso Moisés les dio la circuncisión, que en realidad no proviene de Moisés, sino de los patriarcas y aun en sábado la practican. 23 Ahora bien, si para cumplir la Ley de Moisés circuncidan a un varón incluso en sábado, ¿por qué se enfurecen conmigo si en sábado lo sano por completo? 24 No juzguen por las apariencias; juzguen con justicia.
¿Es este el Cristo?
25 Algunos de los que vivían en Jerusalén comentaban: «¿No es este al que quieren matar? 26 Ahí está, hablando abiertamente y nadie le dice nada. ¿Será que las autoridades se han convencido de que es el Cristo? 27 Nosotros sabemos de dónde viene este hombre, pero cuando venga el Cristo nadie sabrá su procedencia».
28 Por eso Jesús, que seguía enseñando en el Templo, exclamó:
—¡Conque ustedes me conocen y saben de dónde vengo! No he venido por mi propia cuenta, sino que me envió uno que es digno de confianza. Ustedes no lo conocen, 29 pero yo sí lo conozco porque vengo de parte suya y él mismo me ha enviado.
30 Entonces quisieron arrestarlo, pero nadie le echó mano porque aún no había llegado su hora. 31 Con todo, muchos de entre la multitud creyeron en él y decían: «Cuando venga el Cristo, ¿acaso va a hacer más señales que este hombre?».
32 Los fariseos oyeron a la multitud que murmuraba estas cosas acerca de él y, junto con los jefes de los sacerdotes, mandaron unos guardias del Templo para arrestarlo.
33 —Voy a estar con ustedes un poco más de tiempo —afirmó Jesús—, y luego volveré al que me envió. 34 Me buscarán, pero no me encontrarán, porque adonde yo estaré ustedes no pueden ir.
35 «¿Y este a dónde piensa irse que no podamos encontrarlo? —comentaban entre sí los judíos—. ¿Será que piensa ir a nuestra gente dispersa entre las naciones para enseñar a los que no son judíos? 36 ¿Qué quiso decir con eso de que “me buscarán, pero no me encontrarán” y “adonde yo estaré ustedes no pueden ir”?».
Jesús en el último día de la fiesta
37 En el último día, el más solemne de la fiesta, Jesús se puso de pie y exclamó:
—¡Si alguno tiene sed, que venga a mí y beba! 38 De aquel que cree en mí, como dice[b] la Escritura, de su interior brotarán ríos de agua viva.
39 Con esto se refería al Espíritu que habrían de recibir más tarde los que creyeran en él. Hasta ese momento el Espíritu no había sido dado, porque Jesús no había sido glorificado todavía.
40 Al oír sus palabras, algunos de entre la multitud decían: «Verdaderamente este es el profeta». 41 Otros afirmaban: «¡Es el Cristo!». Pero otros objetaban: «¿Cómo puede el Cristo venir de Galilea? 42 ¿Acaso no dice la Escritura que el Cristo vendrá de la descendencia de David y que será de Belén, el pueblo de donde era David?». 43 Por causa de Jesús la gente estaba dividida. 44 Algunos querían arrestarlo, pero nadie le puso las manos encima.
Incredulidad de los dirigentes judíos
45 Los guardias del Templo volvieron a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a los fariseos, quienes los interrogaron:
—¿Se puede saber por qué no lo han traído?
46 —¡Nunca nadie ha hablado como ese hombre! —declararon los guardias.
47 —¿Así que también ustedes se han dejado engañar? —replicaron los fariseos—. 48 ¿Acaso ha creído en él alguno de los gobernantes o de los fariseos? 49 ¡No! Pero esta gente, que no sabe nada de la Ley, está bajo maldición.
50 Nicodemo, que era uno de ellos y antes había ido a ver a Jesús, les preguntó:
51 —¿Acaso nuestra Ley condena a un hombre sin antes escucharlo y averiguar lo que hace?
52 —¿También tú eres de Galilea? —respondieron—. Investiga y verás que de Galilea no ha salido ningún profeta.[c]

53 Todos se fueron a casa,

Die ungläubigen Brüder Jesu
7 Darnach zog Jesus umher in Galiläa; denn er wollte nicht in Judäa umherziehen, weil die Juden ihn zu töten suchten.
2 Es war aber das Laubhüttenfest der Juden nahe. 3 Da sprachen seine Brüder zu ihm: Brich doch auf von hier und ziehe nach Judäa, damit auch deine Jünger die Werke sehen, die du tust! 4 Denn niemand tut etwas im Verborgenen und sucht doch öffentlich bekannt zu sein. Wenn du solches tust, so offenbare dich der Welt! 5 Denn auch seine Brüder glaubten nicht an ihn.
6 Da spricht Jesus zu ihnen: Meine Zeit ist noch nicht da; aber eure Zeit ist immer bereit. 7 Die Welt kann euch nicht hassen, mich aber haßt sie; denn ich bezeuge von ihr, daß ihre Werke böse sind. 8 Gehet ihr hinauf zum Fest; ich gehe nicht zu diesem Fest hinauf, denn meine Zeit ist noch nicht erfüllt. 9 Solches sagte er zu ihnen und blieb in Galiläa.
Jesus geht im Verborgenen nach Jerusalem zum Laubhüttenfest
10 Nachdem aber seine Brüder zum Fest hinaufgegangen waren, ging auch er hinauf, nicht öffentlich, sondern wie im Verborgenen. 11 Da suchten ihn die Juden am Fest und sprachen: Wo ist er? 12 Und es gab viel Gemurmel seinetwegen unter dem Volk. Etliche sagten: Er ist gut; andere aber sprachen: Nein, sondern er verführt das Volk. 13 Doch redete niemand freimütig über ihn, aus Furcht vor den Juden.
Jesus lehrt im Tempel während des Festes
14 Als aber das Fest schon zur Hälfte verflossen war, ging Jesus in den Tempel hinauf und lehrte. 15 Und die Juden verwunderten sich und sprachen: Wie kennt dieser die Schrift? Er hat doch nicht studiert!
16 Da antwortete ihnen Jesus und sprach: Meine Lehre ist nicht mein, sondern dessen, der mich gesandt hat. 17 Will jemand seinen Willen tun, der wird innewerden, ob diese Lehre von Gott sei, oder ob ich aus mir selbst rede. 18 Wer aus sich selbst redet, der sucht seine eigene Ehre; wer aber die Ehre dessen sucht, der ihn gesandt hat, der ist wahrhaft, und keine Ungerechtigkeit ist in ihm. 19 Hat nicht Mose euch das Gesetz gegeben? Und doch tut keiner von euch das Gesetz. Warum sucht ihr mich zu töten? 20 Das Volk antwortete und sprach: Du hast einen Dämon! Wer sucht dich zu töten?
21 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Ein Werk[a] habe ich getan, und ihr alle verwundert euch darüber. 22 Mose hat euch die Beschneidung gegeben (nicht daß sie von Mose kommt, sondern von den Vätern), und am Sabbat beschneidet ihr den Menschen. 23 Wenn ein Mensch am Sabbat die Beschneidung empfängt, damit das Gesetz[b] Moses nicht übertreten werde, was zürnet ihr mir denn, daß ich den ganzen Menschen am Sabbat gesund gemacht habe? 24 Richtet nicht nach dem Schein, sondern fället ein gerechtes Urteil.
Ist Jesus der Christus?
25 Da sprachen etliche von Jerusalem: Ist das nicht der, den sie zu töten suchen? 26 Und siehe, er redet öffentlich, und sie sagen ihm nichts. Haben etwa die Obersten wirklich erkannt, daß dieser der Christus[c] ist? 27 Doch von diesem wissen wir, woher er ist; wenn aber der Christus kommt, so wird niemand wissen, woher er ist.
28 Da rief Jesus, während er im Tempel lehrte, und sprach: Ja, ihr kennet mich und wisset, woher ich bin! Und doch bin ich nicht von mir selbst gekommen, sondern der Wahrhaftige ist es, der mich gesandt hat, welchen ihr nicht kennet. 29 Ich kenne ihn; denn von ihm bin ich, und er hat mich gesandt. 30 Da suchten sie ihn zu greifen; aber niemand legte Hand an ihn, denn seine Stunde war noch nicht gekommen.
31 Viele aber aus dem Volke glaubten an ihn und sprachen: Wenn der Christus kommt, wird er wohl mehr Zeichen tun, als dieser getan hat? 32 Die Pharisäer hörten, daß das Volk solches von ihm murmelte; darum sandten die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer Diener ab, um ihn zu greifen.
33 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Noch eine kleine Zeit bin ich bei euch, und dann gehe ich hin zu dem, der mich gesandt hat. 34 Ihr werdet mich suchen und nicht finden; und wo ich bin, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen. 35 Da sprachen die Juden untereinander: Wohin will er denn gehen, daß wir ihn nicht finden sollen? Will er etwa zu den unter den Griechen Zerstreuten[d] gehen und die Griechen lehren? 36 Was soll das bedeuten, daß er sagt: Ihr werdet mich suchen und nicht finden, und wo ich bin, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen?
Ströme lebendigen Wassers
37 Aber am letzten, dem großen Tage des Festes, stand Jesus auf, rief und sprach: Wenn jemand dürstet, der komme zu mir und trinke! 38 Wer an mich glaubt wie die Schrift sagt -, aus seinem Leibe werden Ströme lebendigen Wassers fließen. 39 Das sagte er aber von dem Geiste, den die empfangen sollten, welche an ihn glaubten; denn der heilige Geist war noch nicht[e] da, weil Jesus noch nicht verherrlicht war.
Verschiedene Meinungen der Juden. Versuche, Jesus festzunehmen
40 Viele nun aus dem Volke, die diese Rede hörten, sagten: Dieser ist wahrhaftig der Prophet. 41 Andere sagten: Er ist der Christus. Andere aber sagten: Christus kommt doch nicht aus Galiläa? 42 Sagt nicht die Schrift, daß der Christus aus der Nachkommenschaft Davids und aus dem Flecken Bethlehem, wo David war, kommen werde? 43 Also entstand seinetwegen eine Spaltung unter dem Volk. 44 Etliche aber von ihnen wollten ihn greifen, doch legte niemand Hand an ihn.
45 Nun kamen die Diener zu den Hohenpriestern und Pharisäern zurück, und diese sprachen zu ihnen: Warum habt ihr ihn nicht gebracht? 46 Die Diener antworteten: Nie hat ein Mensch so geredet wie dieser Mensch! 47 Da antworteten ihnen die Pharisäer: Seid auch ihr verführt worden? 48 Glaubt auch einer von den Obersten oder von den Pharisäern an ihn? 49 Aber dieser Pöbel, der das Gesetz nicht kennt, der ist unter dem Fluch!
50 Da spricht zu ihnen Nikodemus, der des Nachts zu ihm gekommen und einer der Ihren war:
51 Richtet auch unser Gesetz einen Menschen, man habe ihn denn zuvor selbst gehört und erkannt, was er tut? 52 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Bist du auch aus Galiläa? Forsche nach, und du wirst sehen, daß aus Galiläa kein Prophet ersteht!
53 So ging jeder in sein Haus.

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles
7 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders(A) there were looking for a way to kill him.(B) 2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles(C) was near, 3 Jesus’ brothers(D) said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.(E)
6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time(F) is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me(G) because I testify that its works are evil.(H) 8 You go to the festival. I am not[b] going up to this festival, because my time(I) has not yet fully come.” 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus(J) and asking, “Where is he?”
12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”
Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”(K) 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.(L)
Jesus Teaches at the Festival
14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.(M) 15 The Jews(N) there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning(O) without having been taught?”(P)
16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.(Q) 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out(R) whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory,(S) but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law?(T) Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”(U)
20 “You are demon-possessed,”(V) the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle,(W) and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision(X) (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs),(Y) you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”(Z)
Division Over Who Jesus Is
25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?(AA) 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities(AB) really concluded that he is the Messiah?(AC) 27 But we know where this man is from;(AD) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,(AE) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.(AF) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.(AG) You do not know him, 29 but I know him(AH) because I am from him and he sent me.”(AI)
30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,(AJ) because his hour had not yet come.(AK) 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him.(AL) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs(AM) than this man?”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,(AN) and then I am going to the one who sent me.(AO) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(AP)
35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered(AQ) among the Greeks,(AR) and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”(AS)
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival,(AT) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.(AU) 38 Whoever believes(AV) in me, as Scripture has said,(AW) rivers of living water(AX) will flow from within them.”[c](AY) 39 By this he meant the Spirit,(AZ) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.(BA) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.(BB)
40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”(BC)
41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”
Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?(BD) 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants(BE) and from Bethlehem,(BF) the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided(BG) because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.(BH)
Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders
45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”(BI) the guards replied.
47 “You mean he has deceived you also?”(BJ) the Pharisees retorted. 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?(BK) 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”
50 Nicodemus,(BL) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”(BM)
