The Unbelief of Jesus’s Brothers
7 After this, Jesus traveled in Galilee,(A) since he did not want to travel in Judea(B) because the Jews(C) were trying to kill him.(D) 2 The Jewish Festival of Shelters[a](E) was near. 3 So his brothers(F) said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples can see your works(G) that you are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he’s seeking public recognition. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 (For not even his brothers believed in him.)
6 Jesus told them, “My time(H) has not yet arrived, but your time is always at hand. 7 The world cannot hate(I) you, but it does hate me because I testify about it—that its works are evil. 8 Go up to the festival yourselves. I’m not going up to this festival,[b] because my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After he had said these things, he stayed in Galilee.
Jesus at the Festival of Shelters
10 After his brothers had gone up to the festival, then he also went up, not openly but secretly. 11 The Jews were looking for him at the festival and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was a lot of murmuring about him among the crowds. Some were saying, “He’s a good(J) man.” Others were saying, “No, on the contrary, he’s deceiving(K) the people.” 13 Still, nobody was talking publicly about him for fear of the Jews.
14 When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple(L) and began to teach. 15 Then the Jews were amazed and said, “How is this man so learned,(M) since he hasn’t been trained?”
16 Jesus answered them, “My teaching isn’t mine but is from the one who sent me.(N) 17 If anyone wants to do his will,(O) he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own. 18 The one who speaks on his own seeks his own glory;(P) but he who seeks the glory(Q) of the one who sent him is true,(R) and there is no unrighteousness in him.(S) 19 Didn’t Moses(T) give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law.(U) Why are you trying to kill me?”
20 “You have a demon!” the crowd responded. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21 “I performed one work,(V) and you are all amazed,” Jesus answered. 22 “This is why Moses has given you circumcision(W) —not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers(X) —and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.(Y) 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath(Z) so that the law of Moses(AA) won’t be broken, are you angry at me because I made a man entirely well on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging(AB) according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment.”
The Identity of the Messiah
25 Some of the people of Jerusalem(AC) were saying, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Yet, look, he’s speaking publicly and they’re saying nothing to him. Can it be true that the authorities(AD) know he is the Messiah?(AE) 27 But we know where this man is from.(AF) When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he is from.”
28 As he was teaching in the temple,(AG) Jesus cried out, “You know me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own, but the one who sent me(AH) is true. You don’t know him;(AI) 29 I know him because I am from him, and he sent me.”(AJ)
30 Then they tried to seize him. Yet no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come. 31 However, many from the crowd believed in him and said, “When the Messiah comes, he won’t perform more signs than this man has done,(AK) will he?” 32 The Pharisees(AL) heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and so the chief priests(AM) and the Pharisees sent servants[c] to arrest him.
33 Then Jesus said, “I am only with you for a short time.(AN) Then I’m going to the one who sent me.(AO) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(AP)
35 Then the Jews(AQ) said to one another, “Where does he intend to go that we won’t find him? He doesn’t intend to go to the Jewish people dispersed[d](AR) among the Greeks(AS) and teach the Greeks, does he? 36 What is this remark he made: ‘You will look for me, and you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come’(AT)?”
The Promise of the Spirit
37 On the last and most important day of the festival,(AU) Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me[e](AV) and drink.(AW) 38 The one who believes in me,(AX) as the Scripture(AY) has said, will have streams of living water(AZ) flow(BA) from deep within him.” 39 He said this about the Spirit.(BB) Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit,(BC) for the Spirit[f] had not yet been given[g] because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
The People Are Divided over Jesus
40 When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, “This truly is the Prophet.”(BD) 41 Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does he? 42 Doesn’t the Scripture(BE) say that the Messiah comes from David’s(BF) offspring[h] and from the town of Bethlehem,(BG) where David lived?” 43 So the crowd was divided(BH) because of him. 44 Some of them wanted to seize him,(BI) but no one laid hands on him.
Debate over Jesus’s Claims
45 Then the servants(BJ) came to the chief priests(BK) and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him?”
46 The servants answered, “No man ever spoke like this!” [i](BL)
47 Then the Pharisees responded to them, “Are you fooled(BM) too? 48 Have any of the rulers(BN) or Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd, which doesn’t know the law, is accursed.”
50 Nicodemus(BO)—the one who came to him previously and who was one of them—said to them, 51 “Our law doesn’t judge a man before it hears from him and knows what he’s doing, does it?” (BP)
52 “You aren’t from Galilee(BQ) too, are you?” they replied. “Investigate and you will see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”(BR)

The Unbelief of Jesus’ Brothers
7 After this Jesus went about in Galilee; he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews[a] sought to kill him. 2 Now the Jews’ feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works you are doing. 4 For no man works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his brothers did not believe in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8 Go to the feast yourselves; I am not[b] going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 So saying, he remained in Galilee.
Jesus at the Festival of Booths
10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught. 15 The Jews marveled at it, saying, “How is it that this man has learning,[c] when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me; 17 if any man’s will is to do his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The people answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel at it. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man upon the sabbath. 23 If on the sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
Is This the Christ?
25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 Yet we know where this man comes from; and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from? But I have not come of my own accord; he who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 30 So they sought to arrest him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the people believed in him; they said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”
Officers Are Sent to Arrest Jesus
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd thus muttering about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, “I shall be with you a little longer, and then I go to him who sent me; 34 you will seek me and you will not find me; where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we shall not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”
Rivers of Living Water
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, “If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. 38 He who believes in me, as[d] the scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Division among the People
40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This is really the prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
The Unbelief of Those in Authority
45 The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees answered them, “Are you led astray, you also? 48 Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed.” 50 Nicode′mus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee.”

Eu não vou agora, pois ainda não chegou o momento certo. 9 Depois de dizer isto, Jesus ficou na Galileia.
10 Os irmãos de Jesus foram para a festa. Depois deles terem ido, Jesus também foi, mas não deixou que ninguém o visse. 11 Durante a festa, os líderes judeus procuravam por Jesus. Eles perguntavam para as pessoas:
—Onde está aquele homem?
12 Havia muitas pessoas na festa, e várias falavam em voz baixa a respeito de Jesus. Algumas diziam:

—Não, ele está enganando o povo!
13 Porém, ninguém tinha coragem de falar dele abertamente por terem medo dos líderes judeus.
Jesus ensina na festa
14 No decorrer da festa, Jesus foi ao templo e começou a ensinar a todos. 15 Os judeus, admirados, diziam:
—Como é que este homem sabe tanto se ele nunca estudou para isso?
16 Jesus respondeu:
—As coisas que ensino não vêm de mim. O que eu ensino vem daquele que me enviou. 17 Se alguém quiser fazer a vontade de Deus, saberá que o meu ensino vem dele e não de mim mesmo. 18 Quem ensina as suas próprias ideias busca glória para si mesmo. Porém, aquele que procura a glória de quem o enviou fala a verdade e não engana ninguém. 19 Moisés não deu a lei a vocês? Porém nenhum de vocês obedece a essa lei. Por que vocês querem me matar? 20 O povo respondeu:
—Você tem um demônio. Quem é que quer matá-lo?
21 Jesus respondeu:
—Fiz um milagre e vocês ficaram admirados. 22 Moisés deu a lei da circuncisão a vocês. (Aliás, nem foi Moisés que deu essa lei. A lei da circuncisão já existia desde os tempos dos nossos pais.) No entanto vocês circuncidam os meninos no sábado. 23 Se um menino pode ser circuncidado no sábado para se cumprir a lei de Moisés, por que então vocês se irritaram comigo por eu ter curado um homem por completo no sábado? 24 Deixem de julgar só pelas aparências. Sejam justos e julguem por aquilo que é reto.
Será Jesus o Messias?
25 Então algumas pessoas que viviam em Jerusalém disseram:
—Não é este o homem que eles queriam matar? 26 Vejam só! Ele está aí falando abertamente a todos e ninguém lhe faz nada! Será que os líderes do povo sabem que este é realmente o Messias? 27 Nós sabemos de onde este homem vem mas, quando vier o Cristo, ninguém saberá de onde ele virá.
28 Jesus, que ainda estava ensinando no templo, exclamou em voz alta:
—Vocês me conhecem e sabem de onde eu venho. Porém eu não vim por minha própria vontade. Eu fui enviado por aquele que é verdadeiro e que vocês não conhecem. 29 Mas eu o conheço. Eu venho dele e foi ele quem me enviou.
30 Quando Jesus disse isto, o povo tentou prendê-lo, mas ninguém conseguiu sequer tocar nele, pois o momento certo ainda não tinha chegado.
31 E várias pessoas da multidão que acreditavam nele diziam:
—Quando o Messias vier, será que ele vai fazer mais milagres do que este homem?
Os judeus tentam prender a Jesus
32 Os fariseus ouviram a multidão falando de Jesus. Então eles e os líderes dos sacerdotes decidiram mandar os guardas do templo para prenderem Jesus.
33 Jesus disse:
—Estarei com vocês um pouco mais. Depois voltarei para aquele que me enviou. 34 Vocês vão me procurar, mas não vão me encontrar. E para onde eu vou vocês não podem ir.
35 Os judeus perguntavam uns para os outros:
—Onde é que ele vai que nós não poderemos ir ao seu encontro? Será que ele vai viver com os judeus que vivem nas cidades gregas? Vai ensinar os gregos? 36 O que ele quer dizer com as palavras: “Vocês vão me procurar, mas não vão me encontrar” e “Para onde eu vou vocês não podem ir”?
Jesus fala a respeito do Espírito Santo
37 No último e mais importante dia da festa, Jesus disse a todos:
—Se alguém tem sede, venha a mim e beba. 38 E rios de água viva correrão do coração de quem crer em mim. Assim dizem as Escrituras Sagradas. 39 Jesus estava falando do Espírito Santo. O Espírito ainda não tinha sido dado porque Jesus ainda não tinha sido glorificado. Mais tarde, aqueles que cressem em Jesus iriam receber esse Espírito.
Discussão sobre Jesus
40 Uma grande multidão ouvia a Jesus. Muitas pessoas diziam:
—Com certeza ele é o Profeta[b].
41 Outras diziam:
—Ele é o Messias.
Outras ainda diziam:
—O Messias não virá da Galileia. 42 As Escrituras dizem que o Cristo virá de Belém, da terra e da família de Davi.
43 E elas não concordavam umas com as outras. 44 Outras ainda queriam prender a Jesus, mas ninguém fez isso.
Os líderes do povo rejeitam a Jesus
45 Quando os guardas do templo voltaram, os líderes dos sacerdotes e os fariseus perguntaram:
—Por que vocês não prenderam Jesus?
46 Os guardas do templo responderam:
—As coisas que ele diz são superiores às palavras de qualquer outro homem.
47 Os fariseus disseram:
—Vocês por acaso também foram enganados por ele? 48 Por acaso algum dos líderes dos fariseus se tornou discípulo dele? 49 Essas pessoas que não sabem nada da lei estão debaixo da maldição de Deus.
50 Nicodemos, aquele que tinha ido visitar a Jesus[c] de noite, embora fosse um dos fariseus, disse:
51 —Não podemos julgar um homem antes de sabermos o que ele fez. Nossa lei não permite isso. 52 Os fariseus então responderam:
—Você também vem da Galileia? Estude as Escrituras! Você verá que nenhum profeta[d] vem da Galileia.

53 [e] E todos foram embora para suas casas.
