⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil.^(A)

The World’s Hatred

¹⁸ “If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you.^{(A) 19} If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.^(A)

¹⁶ Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?

General Maxims

⁵ They are from the world; therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them.

⁴ Adulterers!^[a] Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.^(A)

⁷ For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed, it cannot,^(A)

¹⁴ I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.^(A)

²³ Whoever hates me hates my Father also.^{(A) 24} If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.^{(B) 25} It was to fulfill the word that is written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’^(C)
