An Adulteress Faces the Light of the World

^53 [a]And everyone went to his own house.

Jesus the Light of the World

8 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

² Now ^[b]early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and ^(A)taught them. ³ Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, ⁴ they said to Him, “Teacher, ^[c]this woman was caught in ^(B)adultery, in the very act. ^5 (C)Now ^[d]Moses, in the law, commanded us ^[e]that such should be stoned. But what do You ^[f]say?” ⁶ This they said, testing Him, that they ^(D)might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, ^[g]as though He did not hear.

⁷ So when they continued asking Him, He ^[h]raised Himself up and said to them, ^(E)“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” ⁸ And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. ⁹ Then those who heard it, ^(F)being^[i] convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. ¹⁰ When Jesus had raised Himself up ^[j]and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers ^[k]of yours? Has no one condemned you?”

¹¹ She said, “No one, Lord.”

And Jesus said to her, ^(G)“Neither do I condemn you; go ^[l]and ^(H)sin no more.”

²⁰ Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. ²¹ Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. ²² But even now I know that ^(A)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha said to Him, ^(B)“I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

²⁵ Jesus said to her, “I am ^(C)the resurrection and the life. ^(D)He who believes in Me, though he may ^(E)die, he shall live. ²⁶ And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, ^(F)I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

Jesus and Death, the Last Enemy

²⁸ And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.” ²⁹ As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him. ³⁰ Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but ^[a]was in the place where Martha met Him. ^31 (G)Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, ^[b]saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³² Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she ^(H)fell down at His feet, saying to Him, ^(I)“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

³³ Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

^11 (A)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. ¹² And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. ¹³ Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

^14 (B)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and ^(C)did not know that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

¹⁶ Jesus said to her, ^(D)“Mary!”

She turned and said to ^[a]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

¹⁷ Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ^(E)ascended to My Father; but go to ^(F)My brethren and say to them, ^(G)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to ^(H)My God and your God.’ ”

^18 (I)Mary Magdalene came and told the ^[b]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
