³⁶ What does he mean by saying, ‘You will search for me, but you will not find me’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”

³⁴ You will search for me, but you will not find me, and where I am, you cannot come.”^(A)

⁹ Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?”^(A)

¹⁴ Those who are unspiritual^[a] do not receive the gifts of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.^(A)

¹⁷ Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying to us, ‘A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me,’ and ‘because I am going to the Father’?” ¹⁸ They said, “What does he mean by this ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.”

³⁴ The crowd answered him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah^[a] remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”^(A)

The Words of Eternal Life

⁶⁰ When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?”

⁵² The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”^(A)

⁴¹ Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

⁴ Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?”
