Jesus and the Religious Leaders

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him.

²⁶ Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, ^(A)for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.

^3 (A)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

¹⁹ The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, ^(A)“You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”

^47 (A)Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, ^(B)“What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. ⁴⁸ If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.”

Rejected by the Authorities

⁴⁵ Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

⁴⁶ The officers answered, ^(A)“No man ever spoke like this Man!”

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? ⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? ⁴⁹ But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus ^(B)(he who came to ^[a]Jesus ^[b]by night, being one of them) said to them, ^51 (C)“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

⁵² They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for ^(D)no prophet ^[c]has arisen out of Galilee.”

An Adulteress Faces the Light of the World

^53 [d]And everyone went to his own house.

^52 (A)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a ^(B)robber, with swords and clubs? ⁵³ When I was with you daily in the ^(C)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your ^(D)hour, and the power of darkness.”

¹³ “But ^(A)woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

²³ And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the ^(A)Son of David?”

^24 (B)Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by ^[a]Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”
