Five Thousand Men Fed

After these things (A)Jesus went away to the other side of (B)the Sea of Galilee (or (C)Tiberias). A large crowd was following Him, because they were watching the [a](D)signs which He was performing on those who were sick. But (E)Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. Now (F)the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. So Jesus, after raising His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, *said to (G)Philip, “Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?” But He was saying this only to (H)test him, for He Himself knew what He intended to do. (I)Philip answered Him, “(J)Two hundred [b]denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, for each to receive just a little!” One of His (K)disciples, (L)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, *said to Him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two (M)fish; but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people recline to eat.” Now there was (N)plenty of grass in the place. So the men reclined, about [c](O)five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and (P)after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were reclining; likewise also of the (Q)fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, He *said to His (R)disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve (S)baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the [d]sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the (T)Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Jesus Walks on the Water

15 So Jesus, aware that they [e]intended to come and take Him by force (U)to make Him king, (V)withdrew again to (W)the mountain by Himself, alone.

16 Now when evening came, His (X)disciples went down to the sea, 17 and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea (Y)to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 In addition, the sea began getting rough, because a strong wind was blowing. 19 Then, when they had rowed about [f]twenty-five or thirty stadia, they *saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat; and they were frightened. 20 But He *said to them, “It is I; [g](Z)do not be afraid.” 21 So they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

22 The next day (AA)the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there except one, and that Jesus (AB)had not gotten into the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had departed alone. 23 Other small boats came from (AC)Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the (AD)Lord (AE)had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats and (AF)came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “(AG)Rabbi, when did You get here?”

Words to the People

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you (AH)seek Me, not because you saw [h](AI)signs, but because you ate some of the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not (AJ)work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for (AK)eternal life, which (AL)the Son of Man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, (AM)has set His [i]seal.” 28 Therefore they said to Him, “What are we to do, so that we may accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is (AN)the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He (AO)has sent.” 30 So they said to Him, “(AP)What then are You doing as a (AQ)sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work are You performing? 31 (AR)Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘(AS)He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 For the bread of God is [j]that which (AT)comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, always (AU)give us this bread.”

35 Jesus said to them, (AV)I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me (AW)will never be thirsty. 36 But (AX)I said to you that you have indeed seen Me, and yet you do not believe. 37 (AY)Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out. 38 For (AZ)I have come down from heaven, (BA)not to do My own will, but (BB)the will of Him who (BC)sent Me. 39 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of (BD)everything that He has given Me I will (BE)lose nothing, but will (BF)raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who (BG)sees the Son and (BH)believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will (BI)raise him up on the last day.”

Words to the Jews

41 (BJ)So then the Jews were complaining about Him because He said, “I am the bread that (BK)came down out of heaven.” 42 And they were saying, “(BL)Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother (BM)we know? How does He now say, (BN)I have come down out of heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop complaining among yourselves. 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (BO)draws him; and I will (BP)raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written (BQ)in the Prophets: ‘(BR)And they shall all be (BS)taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. 46 (BT)Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes (BU)has eternal life. 48 (BV)I am the bread of life. 49 (BW)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that (BX)comes down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and (BY)not die. 51 (BZ)I am the living bread that (CA)came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, (CB)he will live forever; and the bread which I will give (CC)for the life of the world also is (CD)My flesh.”

52 (CE)Then the Jews (CF)began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (CG)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (CH)raise him up on the last day. 55 For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (CI)remains in Me, and I in him. 57 Just as the (CJ)living Father (CK)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. 58 This is the bread that (CL)came down out of heaven, not as (CM)the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread (CN)will live forever.”

Words to the Disciples

59 These things He said (CO)in the synagogue as He taught (CP)in Capernaum.

60 So then many of His (CQ)disciples, when they heard this, said, “(CR)This statement is very [k]unpleasant; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (CS)aware that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, “Is this [l](CT)offensive to you? 62 What then if you see (CU)the Son of Man (CV)ascending to where He was before? 63 (CW)It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; (CX)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life. 64 But there are (CY)some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus (CZ)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and (DA)who it was who would [m]betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have (DB)told you that no one can come to Me unless (DC)it has been granted him from the Father.”

Peter’s Confession of Faith

66 As a result of this many of His (DD)disciples (DE)left, and would no longer walk with Him. 67 So Jesus said to (DF)the twelve, “You do not want to leave also, do you?” 68 (DG)Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (DH)words of eternal life. 69 And we have already believed and have come to know that You are (DI)the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus answered them, (DJ)Did I Myself not choose you, (DK)the twelve? And yet one of you is (DL)a devil.” 71 Now He meant Judas (DM)the son of Simon Iscariot; for he, (DN)one of (DO)the twelve, [n]was going to betray Him.

Jesus Teaches at the Feast

After these things Jesus (DP)was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because (DQ)the Jews (DR)were seeking to kill Him. Now the feast of the Jews, (DS)the Feast of Booths, was near. So His (DT)brothers said to Him, “Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your (DU)disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. For no one does anything in secret [o]when he himself is striving to be known publicly. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” For not even His (DV)brothers believed in Him. So Jesus *said to them, (DW)My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready. (DX)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that (DY)its deeds are evil. Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, because (DZ)My time has not yet fully arrived.” Now having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

10 But when His (EA)brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret. 11 (EB)So the Jews (EC)were looking for Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” 12 And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: (ED)some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people.” 13 However, no one was speaking openly about Him, for (EE)fear of [p]the Jews.

14 But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple area, and began to (EF)teach. 15 (EG)The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man (EH)become learned, not having been educated?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, (EI)My teaching is not My own, but His who sent Me. 17 (EJ)If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God, or I am speaking from Myself. 18 The one who speaks from himself (EK)seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19 (EL)Did Moses not give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why are you (EM)seeking to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “(EN)You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill You?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did (EO)one [q]deed, and you all are astonished. 22 For this reason (EP)Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from (EQ)the fathers), and even on a Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 (ER)If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry at Me because I made an entire man well on a Sabbath? 24 Do not (ES)judge by the outward appearance, but judge [r]with righteous judgment.”

25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this man not the one whom they are seeking to kill? 26 And yet look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. (ET)The rulers do not really know that this is the [s]Christ, do they? 27 However, (EU)we know where this man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, (EV)teaching and saying, (EW)You both know Me and you know where I am from; and (EX)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 (EY)I do know Him, because (EZ)I am from Him, and (FA)He sent Me.” 30 So they (FB)were seeking to arrest Him; and yet no one laid a hand on Him, because His (FC)hour had not yet come. 31 But (FD)many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “(FE)When the [t]Christ comes, He will not perform more [u](FF)signs than those which this man has done, will He?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent (FG)officers to (FH)arrest Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, (FI)For a little while longer I am going to be with you, and then (FJ)I am going to Him who sent Me. 34 (FK)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 (FL)The Jews then said to one another, “(FM)Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He does not intend to go to (FN)the Dispersion among (FO)the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, does He? 36 What is this statement that He said, (FP)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 Now on (FQ)the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (FR)If anyone is thirsty, [v]let him come to Me and drink. 38 The one who believes in Me, (FS)as the Scripture said, ‘[w]From his innermost being will flow rivers of (FT)living water.’” 39 But this He said (FU)in reference to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for (FV)the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (FW)glorified.

People’s Division over Jesus

40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is (FX)the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the [x]Christ.” But others were saying, “(FY)Surely the [y]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (FZ)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (GA)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (GB)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The (GC)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The (GD)officers answered, “(GE)Never has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “(GF)You have not been led astray too, have you? 48 (GG)Not one of (GH)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 (GI)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 (GJ)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “(GK)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 [[[z]And everyone went to his home.

The Adulterous Woman

But Jesus went to (GL)the Mount of Olives. And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and (GM)He sat down and began teaching them. Now the scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in the act of adultery, and after placing her in the center of the courtyard, they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the Law, (GN)Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” Now they were saying this to (GO)test Him, (GP)so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. When they persisted in asking Him, (GQ)He straightened up and said to them, (GR)He who is without sin among you, let him be the (GS)first to throw a stone at her.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Now when they heard this, they began leaving, one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman where she was, in the center of the courtyard. 10 And (GT)straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, [aa]Lord.” And Jesus said, (GU)I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on do not (GV)sin any longer.”]]

Jesus Is the Light of the World

12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, (GW)I am the Light of the world; (GX)the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “(GY)You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not [ab]true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, (GZ)Even if I am testifying about Myself, My testimony is [ac]true, because I know (HA)where I came from and where I am going; but (HB)you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 (HC)You judge [ad]according to the flesh; (HD)I am not judging anyone. 16 But even (HE)if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17 Even in (HF)your Law it has been written that the testimony of (HG)two people is [ae]true. 18 I am He who testifies about Myself, and (HH)the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; (HI)if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 These words He spoke [af]in (HJ)the treasury, as (HK)He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because (HL)His hour had not yet come.

21 Then He said again to them, “I am going away, and (HM)you will look for Me, and (HN)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So (HO)the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, (HP)Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, (HQ)You are from below, I am from above; (HR)you are of this world, (HS)I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you (HT)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that [ag](HU)I am, (HV)you will die in your sins.” 25 Then they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, [ah]What have I even been saying to you from the beginning? 26 I have many things to say and to judge regarding you, but (HW)He who sent Me is true; and (HX)the things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He was speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you (HY)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that [ai](HZ)I am, and (IA)I do nothing [aj]on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me; (IB)He [ak]has not left Me alone, for (IC)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He said these things, (ID)many came to believe in Him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, (IE)If you continue in My word, then you are truly My (IF)disciples; 32 and (IG)you will know the truth, and (IH)the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered Him, “(II)We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly I say to you, (IJ)everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 Now (IK)the slave does not remain in the house forever; (IL)the son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son (IM)sets you free, you really will be free. 37 I know that you are (IN)Abraham’s descendants; yet (IO)you are seeking to kill Me, because My word [al]has no place in you. 38 I speak of the things which I have seen [am]with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (IP)your father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is (IQ)our father.” Jesus *said to them, (IR)If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But as it is, (IS)you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has (IT)told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 You are doing the deeds of (IU)your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born as a result of sexual immorality; (IV)we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, (IW)you would love Me, (IX)for I came forth from God and am here; for I have (IY)not even come [an]on My own, but [ao](IZ)He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand [ap](JA)what I am saying? It is because you cannot (JB)listen to My word. 44 (JC)You are of (JD)your father the devil, and (JE)you want to do the desires of your father. (JF)He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because (JG)there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells [aq]a lie, he (JH)speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of [ar]lies. 45 But because (JI)I say the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If (JJ)I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (JK)The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”

48 (JL)The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not rightly say that You are a (JM)Samaritan, and You (JN)have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not (JO)have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 But (JP)I am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges. 51 Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone (JQ)follows My word, he will never (JR)see death.” 52 (JS)The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (JT)have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, ‘If anyone (JU)follows My word, he will never (JV)taste of death.’ 53 You (JW)are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, (JX)If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; (JY)it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and (JZ)you have not come to know Him, (KA)but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be (KB)a liar like you; (KC)but I do know Him, and I (KD)follow His word. 56 (KE)Your father Abraham was (KF)overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.” 57 (KG)So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham [as]was born, [at](KH)I am.” 59 Therefore they (KI)picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus (KJ)hid Himself and left the temple grounds.

Healing the Man Born Blind

As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, “(KK)Rabbi, who sinned, (KL)this man or his (KM)parents, that he would be born blind?” Jesus answered, It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was (KN)so that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me (KO)as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am (KP)the Light of the world.” When He had said this, He (KQ)spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes, and said to him, “Go, wash in (KR)the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he left and (KS)washed, and (KT)came back seeing. So the neighbors, and those who previously saw [au]him as a beggar, were saying, “Is this not the one who used to (KU)sit and beg?” Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” [av]The man himself kept saying, “I am the one.” 10 So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made mud, and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to (KV)Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.” 12 And they said to him, “Where is He?” He *said, “I do not know.”

Controversy over the Man

13 They *brought [aw]the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees. 14 (KW)Now it was a Sabbath on the day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 (KX)Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because He (KY)does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such [ax](KZ)signs?” And (LA)there was dissension among them. 17 So they *said (LB)again to the man who was blind, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a (LC)prophet.”

18 (LD)The Jews then did not believe it about him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight, 19 and they questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” 20 His parents then answered and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they (LE)were afraid of the [ay]Jews; for the Jews (LF)had already reached the decision that if anyone confessed Him to be [az]Christ, (LG)he was to be excommunicated from the synagogue. 23 It was for this reason that his parents said, “(LH)He is of age; ask him.”

24 So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind, and said to him, “(LI)Give glory to God; we know that (LJ)this man is a sinner.” 25 He then answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 So they said to him, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “(LK)I told you already and you did not (LL)listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?” 28 They spoke abusively to him and said, “You are His disciple, but (LM)we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (LN)we do not know where He is from.” 30 The man answered and said to them, “Well, here is the amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes! 31 We know that (LO)God does not listen to sinners; but if someone is [ba]God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him. 32 [bb]Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 (LP)If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “(LQ)You were born entirely in sins, and yet you are teaching us?” So they [bc](LR)put him out.

Jesus Affirms His Deity

35 Jesus heard that they had [bd](LS)put him out, and upon finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the (LT)Son of Man?” 36 He answered [be]by saying, “And (LU)who is He, [bf]Sir, that I may believe in Him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and (LV)He is the one who is talking with you.” 38 And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And he (LW)worshiped Him. 39 And Jesus said, (LX)For judgment I came into this world, so that (LY)those who do not see may see, and (LZ)those who see may become blind.” 40 Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him, “(MA)We are not blind too, are we?” 41 Jesus said to them, (MB)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now that you maintain, ‘(MC)We see,’ your sin remains.

Parable of the Good Shepherd

10 “Truly, truly I say to you, the one who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is (MD)a thief and a robber. But the one who enters by the door is (ME)a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep listen to (MF)his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and (MG)leads them out. When he puts all his own sheep outside, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know (MH)his voice. However, a stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know (MI)the voice of strangers.” Jesus told them this (MJ)figure of speech, but they did not understand what the things which He was saying to them [bg]meant.

So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly I say to you, I am (MK)the door of the sheep. All those who came before Me are (ML)thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. (MM)I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they (MN)would have life, and [bh]have it abundantly.

11 (MO)I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd (MP)lays down His life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand, and not a (MQ)shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the flock. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep. 14 (MR)I am the good shepherd, and (MS)I know My own, and My own know Me, 15 just as (MT)the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and (MU)I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And I have (MV)other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice; and they will become (MW)one flock, with (MX)one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I (MY)lay down My life so that I may take it back. 18 (MZ)No one has taken it away from Me, but I (NA)lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it back. (NB)This commandment I received from My Father.”

19 (NC)Dissension occurred again among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them were saying, “He (ND)has a demon and (NE)is insane. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others were saying, “These are not the words of one who is (NF)demon-possessed. (NG)A demon cannot open the eyes of those who are blind, can it?”

Jesus Asserts His Deity

22 At that time the [bi]Feast of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple area, in the portico of (NH)Solomon. 24 (NI)The Jews then surrounded Him and began saying to Him, “How long [bj]will You keep us in suspense? If You are the [bk]Christ, tell us (NJ)plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, (NK)I told you, and you do not believe; (NL)the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26 But you do not believe, because (NM)you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep (NN)listen to My voice, and (NO)I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give them (NP)eternal life, and they will never perish; and (NQ)no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 [bl]My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 (NR)I and the Father are [bm]one.”

31 The Jews (NS)picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus replied to them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “We are not stoning You for a good work, but for (NT)blasphemy; and because You, being a man, (NU)make Yourself out to be God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Has it not been written in (NV)your (NW)Law: ‘(NX)I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be nullified), 36 are you saying of Him whom the Father (NY)sanctified and (NZ)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘(OA)I am the Son of God’? 37 (OB)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, believe (OC)the works, so that you may [bn]know and understand that (OD)the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” 39 Therefore (OE)they were seeking again to arrest Him, and (OF)He eluded their grasp.

40 And He went away (OG)again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He stayed there. 41 Many came to Him and were saying, “While John performed no (OH)sign, yet (OI)everything John said about this man was true.” 42 And (OJ)many believed in Him there.

The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was sick: Lazarus of (OK)Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister (OL)Martha. And it was the Mary who (OM)anointed (ON)the Lord with [bo]ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “(OO)Lord, behold, (OP)he whom You love is sick.” But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not [bp]meant for death, but is for (OQ)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” (Now Jesus loved (OR)Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.) So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. Then after this He *said to the disciples, (OS)Let’s go to Judea again.” The disciples *said to Him, “(OT)Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking (OU)to stone You, and yet You are going there again?” Jesus replied, (OV)Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in [bq]him.” 11 This He said, and after this He *said to them, “Our (OW)friend Lazarus (OX)has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.” 12 The disciples then said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will [br]come out of it.” 13 Now (OY)Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about [bs]actual sleep. 14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus died, 15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let’s go to him.” 16 (OZ)Therefore Thomas, who was called [bt](PA)Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, so that we may die with Him!”

17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb (PB)four days. 18 Now (PC)Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [bu]fifteen stadia away; 19 and many of (PD)the Jews had come to (PE)Martha and Mary, (PF)to console them about their brother. 20 So then (PG)Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but (PH)Mary [bv]stayed in the house. 21 Martha then said to Jesus, “(PI)Lord, (PJ)if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 Even now I know that (PK)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” 23 Jesus *said to her, “Your brother will rise from the dead.” 24 Martha *said to Him, “(PL)I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, (PM)I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me (PN)will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have come to believe that You are (PO)the [bw]Christ, the Son of God, and [bx](PP)He who comes into the world.”

28 When she had said this, she (PQ)left and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “(PR)The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard this, she *got up quickly and came to Him.

30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but (PS)was still at the place where Martha met Him. 31 (PT)Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were (PU)consoling her, when they saw that Mary had gotten up quickly and left, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 So when Mary came to the place where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “(PV)Lord, (PW)if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and (PX)the Jews who came with her also weeping, He (PY)was deeply moved in spirit and [by](PZ)was troubled, 34 and He said, “Where have you laid him?” They *said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus (QA)wept. 36 So (QB)the Jews were saying, “See how He (QC)loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could this man, who (QD)opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also [bz]kept this man from dying?”

38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a (QE)cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus *said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, “Lord, by this time [ca]there will be a stench, for he has been dead (QF)four days.” 40 Jesus *said to her, (QG)Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they removed the (QH)stone. And Jesus (QI)raised His eyes, and said, (QJ)Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, (QK)because of the [cb]people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that (QL)You sent Me.” 43 And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 Out came the man who had died, (QM)bound hand and foot with wrappings, and (QN)his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

45 (QO)Therefore many of the Jews (QP)who came to Mary, and (QQ)saw what He had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the (QR)Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

47 Therefore (QS)the chief priests and the Pharisees (QT)convened a (QU)council meeting, and they were saying, “What are we [cc]doing in regard to the fact that this man is performing many [cd](QV)signs? 48 If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our [ce](QW)place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, (QX)Caiaphas, (QY)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor are you taking into account that (QZ)it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead.” 51 Now he did not say this [cf]on his own, but (RA)as he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also (RB)gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they (RC)planned together to kill Him.

54 Therefore Jesus (RD)no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, into a city called (RE)Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Now (RF)the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country prior to the Passover, (RG)in order to [cg]purify themselves. 56 So they (RH)were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now (RI)the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.

Mary Anoints Jesus

12 (RJ)Therefore, six days before (RK)the Passover, Jesus came to (RL)Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they made Him a dinner there, and (RM)Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. (RN)Mary then took a [ch]pound of very expensive (RO)perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But (RP)Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, the one who intended to [ci]betray Him, *said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred [cj]denarii and the proceeds given to poor people?” Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he (RQ)kept the money box, he used to [ck]steal from (RR)what was put into it. Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it [cl]for (RS)the day of My burial. (RT)For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

The (RU)large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not on account of Jesus only, but so that they might also see Lazarus, (RV)whom He raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also, 11 because (RW)on account of him (RX)many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

12 On the next day, when (RY)the large crowd that had come to (RZ)the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began shouting, “(SA)Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, indeed, the (SB)King of Israel!” 14 Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15 (SC)Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkeys colt.” 16 (SD)These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus (SE)was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things for Him. 17 So (SF)the [cm]people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. 18 (SG)For this reason also the [cn]people went to meet Him, (SH)because they heard that He had performed this [co]sign. 19 So the Pharisees said [cp]to one another, “You see that you are not accomplishing anything; look, the world has gone after Him!”

Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now there were some (SI)Greeks among those who were going up to worship at (SJ)the feast; 21 these people then came to (SK)Philip, who was from (SL)Bethsaida of Galilee, and were making a request of him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip *came and *told (SM)Andrew; then Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus. 23 But Jesus *answered them by saying, (SN)The hour has come for the Son of Man to (SO)be glorified. 24 Truly, truly I say to you, (SP)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (SQ)The one who loves his [cq]life loses it, and the one who (SR)hates his [cr]life in this world will keep it [cs]to eternal life. 26 If anyone [ct]serves Me, he must follow Me; and (SS)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone [cu]serves Me, the Father will (ST)honor him.

Jesus Foretells His Death

27 (SU)Now My soul has become troubled; and what am I to say? ‘(SV)Father, save Me from (SW)this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 (SX)Father, glorify Your name.” Then a (SY)voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “(SZ)An angel has spoken to Him!” 30 Jesus responded and said, (TA)This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours. 31 (TB)Now judgment is upon this world; now (TC)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I (TD)am lifted up from the earth, will (TE)draw all people to Myself.” 33 Now He was saying this (TF)to indicate what kind of death He was going to die. 34 The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard from (TG)the Law that (TH)the [cv]Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The (TI)Son of Man must be (TJ)lifted up’? Who is this (TK)Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, (TL)For a little while longer (TM)the Light is among you. (TN)Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who (TO)walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the Light, (TP)believe in the Light, so that you may become (TQ)sons of Light.”

These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and (TR)hid Himself from them. 37 But though He had performed so many [cw]signs in their sight, they still were not believing in Him. 38 This happened so that the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke would be fulfilled: “(TS)Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40 (TT)He has blinded their eyes and He (TU)hardened their heart, so that they will not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and [cx]be converted, and so I will not heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said because (TV)he saw His glory, and (TW)he spoke about Him. 42 Nevertheless (TX)many, even of (TY)the rulers, believed in Him, but (TZ)because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not be (UA)excommunicated from the synagogue; 43 (UB)for they loved the [cy]approval of people rather than the [cz]approval of God.

44 Now Jesus cried out and said, (UC)The one who believes in Me, does not believe only in Me, but also in Him who sent Me. 45 And (UD)the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (UE)I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My [da]teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for (UF)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 (UG)The one who rejects Me and does not [db]accept My [dc]teachings has one who judges him: (UH)the word which I spoke. That will judge him on (UI)the last day. 49 (UJ)For I did not speak [dd]on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me (UK)has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that (UL)His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak (UM)just as the Father has told Me.”

The Lord’s Supper

13 Now before the Feast of (UN)the Passover, Jesus, knowing that (UO)His hour had come that He would depart from this world (UP)to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them [de]to the end. And during supper, (UQ)the devil having already put into the heart of (UR)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, Jesus, (US)knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that (UT)He had come forth from God and was going back to God, *got up from supper and *laid His outer garments aside; and He took a towel and (UU)tied it around Himself.

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

Then He *poured water into the basin, and began (UV)washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, You are washing my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand (UW)later.” Peter *said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, (UX)If I do not wash you, (UY)you have no [df]place with Me.” Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And (UZ)you are clean—but [dg]not all of you.” 11 For (VA)He knew the one who was betraying Him; it was for this reason that He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 Then, when He had washed their feet, and (VB)taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? 13 You call Me (VC)‘Teacher’ and (VD)‘Lord’; and [dh]you are correct, for so I am. 14 So if I, (VE)the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I gave you (VF)an example, so that you also would do just as I did for you. 16 Truly, truly I say to you, (VG)a slave is not greater than his master, nor is (VH)[di]one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are (VI)blessed if you do them. 18 (VJ)I am not speaking about all of you. I know the ones whom I have (VK)chosen; but this is happening (VL)so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘(VM)He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 19 From now on (VN)I am telling you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that (VO)I am He. 20 Truly, truly I say to you, (VP)the one who [dj]receives anyone I send, [dk]receives Me; and the one who [dl]receives Me [dm]receives Him who sent Me.”

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

21 When Jesus had said these things, He (VQ)became troubled in spirit, and [dn]testified and said, “Truly, truly I say to you that (VR)one of you will [do]betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, (VS)at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. 23 Lying back on (VT)Jesus’ chest was one of His disciples, (VU)whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter *nodded to this disciple and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” 25 He then simply (VV)leaned back on Jesus’ chest and *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus then *answered, “That man is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the piece of bread, He *took and *gave it to Judas, (VW)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After [dp]this, (VX)Satan then (VY)entered him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you are doing, do it quickly.” 28 Now none of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were assuming, since Judas (VZ)kept the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we need (WA)for the feast”; or else, that he was to [dq](WB)give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the piece of bread, he left immediately; and (WC)it was night.

31 Therefore when he had left, Jesus *said, “Now [dr]is (WD)the Son of Man (WE)glorified, and (WF)God [ds]is glorified in Him; 32 [dt]if God is glorified in Him, (WG)God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33 (WH)Little children, I am still with you (WI)a little longer. (WJ)You will look for Me; and just as I said to the [du]Jews, now I also say to you: ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34 I am giving you a (WK)new commandment, (WL)that you love one another; (WM)just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 (WN)By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”

36 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, (WO)Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now; but (WP)you will follow later.” 37 Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? (WQ)I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus *replied, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly I say to you, (WR)a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 (WS)Do not let your heart be troubled; [dv]believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many [dw]rooms; if that were not so, [dx]I would have told you, because (WT)I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, (WU)I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that (WV)where I am, there you also will be. And you know the way where I am going.” (WW)Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going; how do we know the way?” Jesus *said to him, “I am (WX)the way, and (WY)the truth, and (WZ)the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.

Oneness with the Father

(XA)If you [dy]had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you (XB)know Him, and have (XC)seen Him.”

(XD)Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus *said to him, “Have I been with [dz]you for so long a time, and yet [ea]you have not come to know Me, Philip? (XE)The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (XF)I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? (XG)The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works. 11 Believe Me that (XH)I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise (XI)believe because of the works themselves. 12 Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and (XJ)greater works than these he will do; because (XK)I am going to the Father. 13 And (XL)whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, so that (XM)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything (XN)in My name, I will do it.

15 (XO)If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

The Holy Spirit

16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another [eb](XP)Helper, so that He may be with you forever; 17 the Helper is (XQ)the Spirit of truth, (XR)whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; (XS)I am coming to you. 19 [ec](XT)After a little while, (XU)the world no longer is going to see Me, but you are going to see Me; (XV)because I live, you also will live. 20 (XW)On that day you will know that (XX)I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I in you. 21 (XY)The one who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and (XZ)the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will (YA)reveal Myself to him.” 22 (YB)Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what has happened (YC)that You are going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, (YD)If anyone loves Me, he will (YE)follow My word; and (YF)My Father will love him, and We (YG)will come to him and make Our dwelling with him. 24 The one who does not love Me (YH)does not follow My words; and (YI)the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you. 26 But the (YJ)Helper, the Holy Spirit (YK)whom the Father will send in My name, (YL)He will teach you all things, and (YM)remind you of all that I said to you. 27 (YN)Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. (YO)[ed]Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor [ee]fearful. 28 (YP)You heard that I said to you, ‘I am going away, and (YQ)I am coming to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced [ef]because (YR)I am going to the Father, for (YS)the Father is greater than I. 29 And now (YT)I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. 30 I will not speak much more with you, for (YU)the ruler of the world is coming, and he has [eg]nothing in regard to Me, 31 but so that the world may know that I love the Father, [eh]I do exactly as (YV)the Father commanded Me. Get up, (YW)let’s go from here.

Jesus Is the Vine—Followers Are Branches

15 (YX)I am the true vine, and My Father is the (YY)vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He [ei]prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. (YZ)You are already [ej]clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. (ZA)Remain in Me, [ek]and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit [el]of itself [em]but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him [en](ZB)bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is (ZC)thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, (ZD)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My (ZE)Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so [eo](ZF)prove to be My disciples. Just as (ZG)the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you; remain in My love. 10 (ZH)If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as (ZI)I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love. 11 (ZJ)These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your (ZK)joy may be made full.

Disciples’ Relation to Each Other

12 “This is (ZL)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 (ZM)Greater love has no one than this, that a person will (ZN)lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My (ZO)friends if (ZP)you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because (ZQ)all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (ZR)You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and (ZS)bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that (ZT)whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. 17 This (ZU)I command you, that you love one another.

Disciples’ Relation to the World

18 (ZV)If the world hates you, [ep]you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but (ZW)I chose you out of the world, (ZX)because of this the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘(ZY)A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, (ZZ)they will persecute you as well; if they (AAA)followed My word, they will follow yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you (AAB)on account of My name, (AAC)because they do not know the One who sent Me. 22 (AAD)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have [eq]sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 (AAE)If I had not done among them (AAF)the works which no one else did, they would not have [er]sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. 25 But this has happened so that the word that is written in their (AAG)Law will be fulfilled: ‘(AAH)They hated Me for no reason.’

26 “When the [es](AAI)Helper comes, (AAJ)whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, (AAK)the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, (AAL)He will testify about Me, 27 and [et](AAM)you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me (AAN)from the beginning.

Jesus’ Warning

16 (AAO)These things I have spoken to you so that you will not [eu]be (AAP)led into sin. They will [ev](AAQ)ban you from the synagogue, yet (AAR)an hour is coming for everyone (AAS)who kills you to think that he is offering a [ew]service to God. These things they will do (AAT)because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have spoken to you, (AAU)so that when their hour comes, you [ex]may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you (AAV)at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Holy Spirit Promised

“But now (AAW)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘(AAX)Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (AAY)grief has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the [ey](AAZ)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (ABA)I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: regarding sin, (ABB)because they do not believe in Me; 10 and regarding (ABC)righteousness, because (ABD)I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; 11 (ABE)and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. 13 But when He, (ABF)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (ABG)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will (ABH)glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 (ABI)All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.

Jesus’ Death and Resurrection Foretold

16 (ABJ)A little while, and (ABK)you no longer are going to see Me; and again a little while, and (ABL)you will see Me.” 17 So some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He is telling us, (ABM)A little while, and you are not going to see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because (ABN)I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” 19 (ABO)Jesus knew that they wanted to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you are not going to see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Truly, truly I say to you that (ABP)you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but (ABQ)your grief will be turned into joy! 21 (ABR)Whenever a woman is in labor she has [ez]pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a [fa]child has been born into the world. 22 Therefore (ABS)you too have grief now; but (ABT)I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.

Prayer Promises

23 And (ABU)on that day (ABV)you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly I say to you, (ABW)if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 (ABX)Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your (ABY)joy may be made full.

25 “These things I have spoken to you in (ABZ)figures of speech; (ACA)an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 (ACB)On that day (ACC)you will ask in My name, and I am not saying to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for (ACD)the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and (ACE)have believed that (ACF)I came forth from the Father. 28 (ACG)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and (ACH)going to the Father.”

29 His disciples *said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and are not [fb]using any (ACI)figure of speech. 30 Now we know that You know all things, and that You have no need for anyone to question You; this is why we (ACJ)believe that You (ACK)came forth from God.” 31 Jesus replied to them, “Do you now believe?

Feeding the Five Thousand(A)

After (B)these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of (C)Tiberias. Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were (D)diseased.[a] And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.

(E)Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. (F)Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to (G)Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.

Philip answered Him, (H)“Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.”

One of His disciples, (I)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, (J)but what are they among so many?”

10 Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them [b]to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” 13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly (K)the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

Jesus Walks on the Sea(L)

15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him (M)king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

16 (N)Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about [c]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were (O)afraid. 20 But He said to them, (P)“It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

The Bread from Heaven

22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except [d]that one [e]which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone— 23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks— 24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, (Q)seeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”

26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 (R)Do not labor for the food which perishes, but (S)for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, (T)because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”

29 Jesus answered and said to them, (U)“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

30 Therefore they said to Him, (V)“What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 (W)Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, (X)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’

32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but (Y)My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 (Z)Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

35 And Jesus said to them, (AA)“I am the bread of life. (AB)He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never (AC)thirst. 36 (AD)But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet (AE)do not believe. 37 (AF)All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and (AG)the one who comes to Me I will [f]by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, (AH)not to do My own will, (AI)but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, (AJ)that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, (AK)that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Rejected by His Own

41 The Jews then [g]complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” 42 And they said, (AL)“Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

43 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, [h]“Do not murmur among yourselves. 44 (AM)No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (AN)draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, (AO)‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ (AP)Therefore everyone who [i]has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 (AQ)Not that anyone has seen the Father, (AR)except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Most assuredly, I say to you, (AS)he who believes [j]in Me has everlasting life. 48 (AT)I am the bread of life. 49 (AU)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 (AV)This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread (AW)which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and (AX)the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”

52 The Jews therefore (AY)quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”

53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless (AZ)you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 (BA)Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is [k]food indeed, and My blood is [l]drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (BB)abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 (BC)This is the bread which came down from heaven—not (BD)as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

59 These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Turn Away

60 (BE)Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a [m]hard saying; who can understand it?”

61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples [n]complained about this, He said to them, “Does this [o]offend you? 62 (BF)What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 (BG)It is the Spirit who gives life; the (BH)flesh profits nothing. The (BI)words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But (BJ)there are some of you who do not believe.” For (BK)Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore (BL)I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”

66 (BM)From that time many of His disciples went [p]back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”

68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (BN)the words of eternal life. 69 (BO)Also we have come to believe and know that You are the [q]Christ, the Son of the living God.”

70 Jesus answered them, (BP)“Did I not choose you, the twelve, (BQ)and one of you is a devil?” 71 He spoke of (BR)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would (BS)betray Him, being one of the twelve.

Jesus’ Brothers Disbelieve

After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, (BT)because the [r]Jews sought to kill Him. (BU)Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. (BV)His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” For (BW)even His (BX)brothers did not believe in Him.

Then Jesus said to them, (BY)“My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. (BZ)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me (CA)because I testify of it that its works are evil. You go up to this feast. I am not [s]yet going up to this feast, (CB)for My time has not yet fully come.” When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.

The Heavenly Scholar

10 But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11 Then (CC)the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” 12 And (CD)there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. (CE)Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” 13 However, no one spoke openly of Him (CF)for fear of the Jews.

14 Now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and (CG)taught. 15 (CH)And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”

16 [t]Jesus answered them and said, (CI)“My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 (CJ)If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. 18 (CK)He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who (CL)seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and (CM)no unrighteousness is in Him. 19 (CN)Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? (CO)Why do you seek to kill Me?”

20 The people answered and said, (CP)“You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”

21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel. 22 (CQ)Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, (CR)but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because (CS)I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24 (CT)Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Could This Be the Christ?

25 Now some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is this not He whom they seek to (CU)kill? 26 But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. (CV)Do the rulers know indeed that this is [u]truly the Christ? 27 (CW)However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.”

28 Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, (CX)“You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and (CY)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me (CZ)is true, (DA)whom you do not know. 29 [v]But (DB)I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

30 Therefore (DC)they sought to take Him; but (DD)no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 And (DE)many of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”

Jesus and the Religious Leaders

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. 33 Then Jesus said [w]to them, (DF)“I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I (DG)go to Him who sent Me. 34 You (DH)will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you (DI)cannot come.”

35 Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to (DJ)the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this thing that He said, ‘You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

37 (DK)On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, (DL)“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 (DM)He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, (DN)out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 (DO)But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those [x]believing in Him would receive; for the [y]Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (DP)glorified.

Who Is He?

40 Therefore [z]many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is (DQ)the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is (DR)the Christ.”

But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 (DS)Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, (DT)where David was?” 43 So (DU)there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now (DV)some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

Rejected by the Authorities

45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

46 The officers answered, (DW)“No man ever spoke like this Man!”

47 Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

50 Nicodemus (DX)(he who came to [aa]Jesus [ab]by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 (DY)“Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”

52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for (DZ)no prophet [ac]has arisen out of Galilee.”

An Adulteress Faces the Light of the World

53 [ad]And everyone went to his own house.

Jesus the Light of the World

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

Now [ae]early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and (EA)taught them. Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to Him, “Teacher, [af]this woman was caught in (EB)adultery, in the very act. (EC)Now [ag]Moses, in the law, commanded us [ah]that such should be stoned. But what do You [ai]say?” This they said, testing Him, that they (ED)might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, [aj]as though He did not hear.

So when they continued asking Him, He [ak]raised Himself up and said to them, (EE)“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it, (EF)being[al] convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up [am]and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers [an]of yours? Has no one condemned you?”

11 She said, “No one, Lord.”

And Jesus said to her, (EG)“Neither do I condemn you; go [ao]and (EH)sin no more.”

12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, (EI)“I am the light of the world. He who (EJ)follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

Jesus Defends His Self-Witness

13 The Pharisees therefore said to Him, (EK)“You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not [ap]true.”

14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but (EL)you do not know where I come from and where I am going. 15 (EM)You judge according to the flesh; (EN)I judge no one. 16 And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for (EO)I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me. 17 (EP)It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am One who bears witness of Myself, and (EQ)the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.”

19 Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?”

Jesus answered, (ER)“You know neither Me nor My Father. (ES)If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”

20 These words Jesus spoke in (ET)the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and (EU)no one laid hands on Him, for (EV)His hour had not yet come.

Jesus Predicts His Departure

21 Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and (EW)you will seek Me, and (EX)will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.”

22 So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?”

23 And He said to them, (EY)“You are from beneath; I am from above. (EZ)You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 (FA)Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; (FB)for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

25 Then they said to Him, “Who are You?”

And Jesus said to them, “Just what I (FC)have been saying to you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but (FD)He who sent Me is true; and (FE)I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.”

27 They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father.

28 Then Jesus said to them, “When you (FF)lift[aq] up the Son of Man, (FG)then you will know that I am He, and (FH)that I do nothing of Myself; but (FI)as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. 29 And (FJ)He who sent Me is with Me. (FK)The Father has not left Me alone, (FL)for I always do those things that please Him.” 30 As He spoke these words, (FM)many believed in Him.

The Truth Shall Make You Free

31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you (FN)abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the (FO)truth, and (FP)the truth shall make you free.”

33 They answered Him, (FQ)“We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (FR)whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And (FS)a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 (FT)Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Abraham’s Seed and Satan’s

37 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but (FU)you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 (FV)I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have [ar]seen with your father.”

39 They answered and said to Him, (FW)“Abraham is our father.”

Jesus said to them, (FX)“If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 (FY)But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth (FZ)which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You do the deeds of your father.”

Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; (GA)we have one Father—God.”

42 Jesus said to them, (GB)“If God were your Father, you would love Me, for (GC)I proceeded forth and came from God; (GD)nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 (GE)Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 (GF)You are of your father the devil, and the (GG)desires of your father you want to (GH)do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and (GI)does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 (GJ)He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

Before Abraham Was, I AM

48 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and (GK)have a demon?”

49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and (GL)you dishonor Me. 50 And (GM)I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Most assuredly, I say to you, (GN)if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”

52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You (GO)have a demon! (GP)Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. (GQ)Who do You make Yourself out to be?”

54 Jesus answered, (GR)“If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. (GS)It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is [as]your God. 55 Yet (GT)you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and (GU)keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham (GV)rejoiced to see My day, (GW)and he saw it and was glad.”

57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”

58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (GX)before Abraham was, (GY)I AM.”

59 Then (GZ)they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, (HA)going[at] through the midst of them, and so passed by.

A Man Born Blind Receives Sight

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, (HB)who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, (HC)but that the works of God should be revealed in him. (HD)I[au] must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is (HE)day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, (HF)I am the light of the world.”

When He had said these things, (HG)He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And He said to him, “Go, wash (HH)in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So (HI)he went and washed, and came back seeing.

Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was [av]blind said, “Is not this he who sat and begged?”

Some said, “This is he.” Others said, [aw]“He is like him.”

He said, “I am he.

10 Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”

11 He answered and said, (HJ)“A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to [ax]the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight.”

12 Then they said to him, “Where is He?”

He said, “I do not know.”

The Pharisees Excommunicate the Healed Man

13 They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”

16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not [ay]keep the Sabbath.”

Others said, (HK)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And (HL)there was a division among them.

17 They said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?”

He said, (HM)“He is a prophet.”

18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”

20 His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said these things because (HN)they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he (HO)would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”

24 So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, (HP)“Give God the glory! (HQ)We know that this Man is a sinner.”

25 He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

26 Then they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”

27 He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?”

28 Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God (HR)spoke to (HS)Moses; as for this fellow, (HT)we do not know where He is from.”

30 The man answered and said to them, (HU)“Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! 31 Now we know that (HV)God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. 32 Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. 33 (HW)If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”

34 They answered and said to him, (HX)“You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?” And they [az]cast him out.

True Vision and True Blindness

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had (HY)found him, He said to him, “Do you (HZ)believe in (IA)the Son of [ba]God?”

36 He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”

37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and (IB)it is He who is talking with you.”

38 Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he (IC)worshiped Him.

39 And Jesus said, (ID)“For judgment I have come into this world, (IE)that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.”

40 Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, (IF)and said to Him, “Are we blind also?”

41 Jesus said to them, (IG)“If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.

Jesus the True Shepherd

10 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by (IH)name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a (II)stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.

Jesus the Good Shepherd

Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came [bb]before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. (IJ)I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

11 (IK)“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a [bc]hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (IL)leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and (IM)I know My sheep, and (IN)am known by My own. 15 (IO)As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; (IP)and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And (IQ)other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; (IR)and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

17 “Therefore My Father (IS)loves Me, (IT)because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I (IU)have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. (IV)This command I have received from My Father.”

19 Therefore (IW)there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. 20 And many of them said, (IX)“He has a demon and is [bd]mad. Why do you listen to Him?”

21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. (IY)Can a demon (IZ)open the eyes of the blind?”

The Shepherd Knows His Sheep

22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, (JA)in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in [be]doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. (JB)The works that I do in My Father’s name, they (JC)bear witness of Me. 26 But (JD)you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, [bf]as I said to you. 27 (JE)My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 (JF)My Father, (JG)who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 (JH)I and My Father are one.”

Renewed Efforts to Stone Jesus

31 Then (JI)the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for (JJ)blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, (JK)make Yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, (JL)‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, (JM)to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture (JN)cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him (JO)whom the Father sanctified and (JP)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ (JQ)because I said, ‘I am (JR)the Son of God’? 37 (JS)If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, (JT)believe the works, that you may know and [bg]believe (JU)that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 (JV)Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

The Believers Beyond Jordan

40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place (JW)where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, (JX)but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.

The Death of Lazarus

11 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of (JY)Mary and her sister Martha. (JZ)It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”

When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when He heard that he was sick, (KA)He stayed two more days in the place where He was. Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”

The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to (KB)stone You, and are You going there again?”

Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? (KC)If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the (KD)light of this world. 10 But (KE)if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” 11 These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus (KF)sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”

12 Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.” 13 However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.

14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.”

16 Then (KG)Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17 So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about [bh]two miles away. 19 And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. 21 Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that (KH)whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 Martha said to Him, (KI)“I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

25 Jesus said to her, “I am (KJ)the resurrection and the life. (KK)He who believes in Me, though he may (KL)die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, (KM)I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

Jesus and Death, the Last Enemy

28 And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.” 29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but [bi]was in the place where Martha met Him. 31 (KN)Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, [bj]saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

32 Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she (KO)fell down at His feet, saying to Him, (KP)“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34 And He said, “Where have you laid him?”

They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

35 (KQ)Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”

37 And some of them said, “Could not this Man, (KR)who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?”

Lazarus Raised from the Dead

38 Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a (KS)stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”

Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would (KT)see the glory of God?” 41 Then they took away the stone [bk]from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 And I know that You always hear Me, but (KU)because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” 43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” 44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with (KV)graveclothes, and (KW)his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus(KX)

45 Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, (KY)and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and (KZ)told them the things Jesus did. 47 (LA)Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, (LB)“What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. 48 If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.”

49 And one of them, (LC)Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 (LD)nor do you consider that it is expedient for [bl]us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and (LE)not for that nation only, but (LF)also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.

53 Then, from that day on, they plotted to (LG)put Him to death. 54 (LH)Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called (LI)Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.

55 (LJ)And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to (LK)purify themselves. 56 (LL)Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?” 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might (LM)seize Him.

The Anointing at Bethany(LN)

12 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, (LO)where Lazarus was [bm]who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. (LP)There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. Then (LQ)Mary took a pound of very costly oil of (LR)spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

But one of His disciples, (LS)Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for [bn]three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and (LT)had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.

But Jesus said, “Let her alone; [bo]she has kept this for the day of My burial. For (LU)the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, (LV)whom He had raised from the dead. 10 (LW)But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, 11 (LX)because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry(LY)

12 (LZ)The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:

“Hosanna!
(MA)‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
The King of Israel!”

14 (MB)Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:

15 “Fear(MC) not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”

16 (MD)His disciples did not understand these things at first; (ME)but when Jesus was glorified, (MF)then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.

17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18 (MG)For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, (MH)“You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”

The Fruitful Grain of Wheat

20 Now there (MI)were certain Greeks among those (MJ)who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, (MK)who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

23 But Jesus answered them, saying, (ML)“The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, (MM)unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much [bp]grain. 25 (MN)He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves Me, let him (MO)follow Me; and (MP)where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

Jesus Predicts His Death on the Cross

27 (MQ)“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? (MR)But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.”

(MS)Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

30 Jesus answered and said, (MT)“This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now (MU)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, (MV)if I am [bq]lifted up from the earth, will draw (MW)all peoples to Myself.” 33 (MX)This He said, signifying by what death He would die.

34 The people answered Him, (MY)“We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”

35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer (MZ)the light is with you. (NA)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; (NB)he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (NC)sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and (ND)was hidden from them.

Who Has Believed Our Report?

37 But although He had done so many (NE)signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:

(NF)“Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:

40 “He(NG) has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
(NH)Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”

41 (NI)These things Isaiah said [br]when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

Walk in the Light

42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but (NJ)because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 (NK)for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44 Then Jesus cried out and said, (NL)“He who believes in Me, (NM)believes not in Me (NN)but in Him who sent Me. 45 And (NO)he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 (NP)I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not [bs]believe, (NQ)I do not judge him; for (NR)I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 (NS)He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—(NT)the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49 For (NU)I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, (NV)what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I (NW)speak.”

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

13 Now (NX)before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that (NY)His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He (NZ)loved them to the end.

And [bt]supper being ended, (OA)the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing (OB)that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He (OC)had come from God and (OD)was going to God, (OE)rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, (OF)“Lord, are You washing my feet?”

Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you (OG)do not understand now, (OH)but you will know after this.”

Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”

Jesus answered him, (OI)“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and (OJ)you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For (OK)He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you [bu]know what I have done to you? 13 (OL)You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 (OM)If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (ON)you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For (OO)I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 (OP)Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 (OQ)If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Jesus Identifies His Betrayer(OR)

18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the (OS)Scripture may be fulfilled, (OT)‘He who eats [bv]bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 19 (OU)Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. 20 (OV)Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

21 (OW)When Jesus had said these things, (OX)He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (OY)one of you will betray Me.” 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.

23 Now (OZ)there was [bw]leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

25 Then, leaning [bx]back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it. And having dipped the bread, He gave it to (PA)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 (PB)Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29 For some thought, because (PC)Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

The New Commandment

31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, (PD)“Now the Son of Man is glorified, and (PE)God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and (PF)glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a (PG)little while longer. You will seek Me; (PH)and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34 (PI)A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 (PJ)By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?”

Jesus answered him, “Where I (PK)am going you cannot follow Me now, but (PL)you shall follow Me afterward.”

37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will (PM)lay down my life for Your sake.”

38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not (PN)crow till you have denied Me three times.

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

14 “Let (PO)not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many [by]mansions; if it were not so, [bz]I would have told you. (PP)I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, (PQ)I will come again and receive you to Myself; that (PR)where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

(PS)Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am (PT)the way, (PU)the truth, and (PV)the life. (PW)No one comes to the Father (PX)except through Me.

The Father Revealed

(PY)“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? (PZ)He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (QA)I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you (QB)I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, (QC)or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

The Answered Prayer

12 (QD)“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 (QE)And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be (QF)glorified in the Son. 14 If you [ca]ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

15 (QG)“If you love Me, [cb]keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and (QH)He will give you another [cc]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 (QI)the Spirit of truth, (QJ)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you (QK)and will be in you. 18 (QL)I will not leave you orphans; (QM)I will come to you.

Indwelling of the Father and the Son

19 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but (QN)you will see Me. (QO)Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that (QP)I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 (QQ)He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and [cd]manifest Myself to him.”

22 (QR)Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, (QS)and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and (QT)the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

The Gift of His Peace

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But (QU)the [ce]Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will (QV)send in My name, (QW)He will teach you all things, and bring to your (QX)remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 (QY)Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me (QZ)say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because [cf]I said, (RA)‘I am going to the Father,’ for (RB)My Father is greater than I.

29 “And (RC)now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, (RD)for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has (RE)nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and (RF)as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

The True Vine

15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. (RG)Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He [cg]takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear (RH)more fruit. (RI)You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. (RJ)Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much (RK)fruit; for without Me you can do (RL)nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, (RM)he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words (RN)abide in you, (RO)you[ch] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. (RP)By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; (RQ)so you will be My disciples.

Love and Joy Perfected

“As the Father (RR)loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 (RS)If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and (RT)that your joy may be full. 12 (RU)This is My (RV)commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (RW)Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 (RX)You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, (RY)for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (RZ)You did not choose Me, but I chose you and (SA)appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father (SB)in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

The World’s Hatred

18 (SC)“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 (SD)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet (SE)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, (SF)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. (SG)If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But (SH)all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 (SI)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, (SJ)but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (SK)He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them (SL)the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have (SM)seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, (SN)‘They hated Me without a cause.’

The Coming Rejection

26 (SO)“But when the [ci]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (SP)He will testify of Me. 27 And (SQ)you also will bear witness, because (SR)you have been with Me from the beginning.

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples

16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you (SS)should not be made to stumble. (ST)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (SU)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And (SV)these things they will do [cj]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when [ck]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I (SW)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (SX)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (SY)if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has (SZ)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (TA)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (TB)of righteousness, (TC)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (TD)of judgment, because (TE)the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, (TF)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (TG)the Spirit of truth, has come, (TH)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 (TI)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 (TJ)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [cl]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A (TK)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (TL)because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [cm]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (TM)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (TN)joy. 21 (TO)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (TP)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (TQ)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (TR)that your joy may be (TS)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (TT)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (TU)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (TV)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (TW)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (TX)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (TY)we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (TZ)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (UA)each to his [cn]own, and will leave Me alone. And (UB)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (UC)in Me you may have peace. (UD)In the world you [co]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (UE)I have overcome the world.”

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, (UF)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, (UG)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [cp]should give eternal life to as many (UH)as You have given Him. And (UI)this is eternal life, that they may know You, (UJ)the only true God, and Jesus Christ (UK)whom You have sent. (UL)I have glorified You on the earth. (UM)I have finished the work (UN)which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together [cq]with Yourself, with the glory (UO)which I had with You before the world was.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

(UP)“I have [cr]manifested Your name to the men (UQ)whom You have given Me out of the world. (UR)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words (US)which You have given Me; and they have received them, (UT)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that (UU)You sent Me.

“I pray for them. (UV)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and (UW)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 (UX)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, (UY)keep[cs] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one (UZ)as We are. 12 While I was with them [ct]in the world, (VA)I kept them in [cu]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and (VB)none of them is [cv]lost (VC)except the son of [cw]perdition, (VD)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; (VE)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, (VF)just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but (VG)that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (VH)Sanctify[cx] them by Your truth. (VI)Your word is truth. 18 (VJ)As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And (VK)for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who [cy]will believe in Me through their word; 21 (VL)that they all may be one, as (VM)You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the (VN)glory which You gave Me I have given them, (VO)that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; (VP)that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

24 (VQ)“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; (VR)for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father! (VS)The world has not known You, but (VT)I have known You; and (VU)these have known that You sent Me. 26 (VV)And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love (VW)with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(VX)

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (VY)He went out with His disciples over (VZ)the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (WA)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. (WB)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, (WC)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”

They answered Him, (WD)“Jesus [cz]of Nazareth.”

Jesus said to them, “I am He. And Judas, who (WE)betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground.

Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”

And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (WF)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

10 (WG)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (WH)the cup which My Father has given Me?”

Before the High Priest

12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (WI)they led Him away to (WJ)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (WK)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (WL)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [da]expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus(WM)

15 (WN)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (WO)another[db] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (WP)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”

He said, “I am (WQ)not.”

18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

Jesus Questioned by the High Priest

19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, (WR)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (WS)in synagogues and (WT)in the temple, where [dc]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (WU)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”

22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (WV)struck[dd] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”

24 (WW)Then Annas sent Him bound to (WX)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Twice More

25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (WY)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not!”

26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (WZ)immediately a rooster crowed.

In Pilate’s Court(XA)

28 (XB)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (XC)But they themselves did not go into the [de]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (XD)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”

30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [df]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”

Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (XE)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (XF)signifying by what death He would die.

33 (XG)Then Pilate entered the [dg]Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”

35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”

36 (XH)Jesus answered, (XI)“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”

Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, (XJ)that I should bear (XK)witness to the truth. Everyone who (XL)is of the truth (XM)hears My voice.”

38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (XN)“I find no fault in Him at all.

Taking the Place of Barabbas(XO)

39 (XP)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

40 (XQ)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (XR)Now Barabbas was a robber.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(XS)

19 So then (XT)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. [dh]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (XU)struck Him with their hands.

Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (XV)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”

Pilate’s Decision

Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”

(XW)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!

Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”

The Jews answered him, (XX)“We have a law, and according to [di]our law He ought to die, because (XY)He made Himself the Son of God.”

Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (XZ)But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [dj]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”

11 Jesus answered, (YA)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (YB)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (YC)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

13 (YD)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (YE)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, (YF)“We have no king but Caesar!”

16 (YG)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [dk]and led Him away.

The King on a Cross(YH)

17 (YI)And He, bearing His cross, (YJ)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (YK)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (YL)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (YM)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

(YN)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (YO)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (YP)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (YQ)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (YR)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (YS)to his own home.

It Is Finished

28 After this, Jesus, [dl]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (YT)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (YU)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (YV)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 (YW)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (YX)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (YY)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (YZ)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (ZA)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (ZB)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (ZC)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (ZD)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(ZE)

38 (ZF)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (ZG)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (ZH)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (ZI)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (ZJ)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (ZK)there they laid Jesus, (ZL)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The Empty Tomb(ZM)

20 Now the (ZN)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the (ZO)stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the (ZP)other disciple, (ZQ)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

(ZR)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw (ZS)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and (ZT)the [dm]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the (ZU)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not [dn]know the (ZV)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 (ZW)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 (ZX)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and (ZY)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, (ZZ)“Mary!”

She turned and said to [do]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet (AAA)ascended to My Father; but go to (AAB)My brethren and say to them, (AAC)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to (AAD)My God and your God.’ ”

18 (AAE)Mary Magdalene came and told the [dp]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

The Apostles Commissioned(AAF)

19 (AAG)Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were [dq]assembled, for (AAH)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, (AAI)“Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He (AAJ)showed them His hands and His side. (AAK)Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! (AAL)As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (AAM)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Seeing and Believing

24 Now Thomas, (AAN)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and (AAO)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be (AAP)unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, [dr]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. (AAQ)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

That You May Believe

30 And (AAR)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (AAS)but these are written that (AAT)you may believe that Jesus (AAU)is the Christ, the Son of God, (AAV)and that believing you may have life in His name.

Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the (AAW)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, (AAX)Thomas called the Twin, (AAY)Nathanael of (AAZ)Cana in Galilee, (ABA)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [ds]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (ABB)did not know that it was Jesus. Then (ABC)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

And He said to them, (ABD)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Therefore (ABE)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, (ABF)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14 This is now (ABG)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [dt]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [du]love You.”

He said to him, (ABH)“Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [dv]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [dw]love You.”

(ABI)He said to him, “Tend My (ABJ)sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [dx]Jonah, do you [dy]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, (ABK)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 (ABL)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying (ABM)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, (ABN)“Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple (ABO)whom Jesus loved following, (ABP)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I [dz]will that he remain (ABQ)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who (ABR)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

25 (ABS)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, (ABT)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
