Feeding Five Thousand
(Matthew 14.13-21; Mark 6.30-44; Luke 9.10-17)
6 Jesus crossed Lake Galilee, which was also known as Lake Tiberias. 2 A large crowd had seen him work miracles to heal the sick, and those people went with him. 3-4 It was almost time for the Jewish festival of Passover, and Jesus went up on a mountain with his disciples and sat down.[a]
5 When Jesus saw the large crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, “Where will we get enough food to feed all these people?” 6 He said this to test Philip, since he already knew what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered, “Don't you know that it would take almost a year's wages[b] just to buy only a little bread for each of these people?”
8 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the disciples. He spoke up and said, 9 “There is a boy here who has five small loaves[c] of barley bread and two fish. But what good is that with all these people?”
10 The ground was covered with grass, and Jesus told his disciples to tell everyone to sit down. About 5,000 men were in the crowd. 11 Jesus took the bread in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he passed the bread to the people, and he did the same with the fish, until everyone had plenty to eat.
12 The people ate all they wanted, and Jesus told his disciples to gather up the leftovers, so that nothing would be wasted. 13 The disciples gathered them up and filled twelve large baskets with what was left over from the five barley loaves.
14 After the people had seen Jesus work this miracle,[d] they began saying, “This must be the Prophet[e] who is to come into the world!” 15 Jesus realized that they would try to force him to be their king. So he went up on a mountain, where he could be alone.
Jesus Walks on the Water
(Matthew 14.22-27; Mark 6.45-52)
16 That evening, Jesus' disciples went down to the lake. 17 They got into a boat and started across for Capernaum. Later that evening Jesus had still not come to them, 18 and a strong wind was making the water rough.
19 When the disciples had rowed for five or six kilometers, they saw Jesus walking on the water. He kept coming closer to the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said, “I am Jesus![f] Don't be afraid!” 21 The disciples wanted to take him into the boat, but suddenly the boat reached the shore where they were headed.
The Bread That Gives Life
22 The people who had stayed on the east side of the lake knew that only one boat had been there. They also knew that Jesus had not left in it with his disciples. But the next day 23 some boats from Tiberias sailed near the place where the crowd had eaten the bread for which the Lord had given thanks. 24 They saw that Jesus and his disciples had left. Then they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus. 25 They found him on the west side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “I tell you for certain that you are not looking for me because you saw the miracles,[g] but because you ate all the food you wanted. 27 (A) Don't work for food that spoils. Work for food that gives eternal life. The Son of Man will give you this food, because God the Father has given him the right to do so.”
28 “What exactly does God want us to do?” the people asked.
29 Jesus answered, “God wants you to have faith in the one he sent.”
30 They replied, “What miracle will you work, so that we can have faith in you? What will you do? 31 (B) For example, when our ancestors were in the desert, they were given manna[h] to eat. It happened just as the Scriptures say, ‘God gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Jesus then told them, “I tell you for certain that Moses wasn't the one who gave you bread from heaven. My Father is the one who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 And the bread that God gives is the one who came down from heaven to give life to the world.”
34 The people said, “Sir, give us this bread and don't ever stop!”
35 Jesus replied:
I am the bread that gives life! No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will ever be thirsty. 36 I have told you already that you have seen me and still do not have faith in me. 37 Everything and everyone that the Father has given me will come to me, and I won't turn any of them away.
38 I didn't come from heaven to do what I want! I came to do what the Father wants me to do. He sent me, 39 and he wants to make certain that none of the ones he has given me will be lost. Instead, he wants me to raise them to life on the last day.[i] 40 My Father wants everyone who sees the Son to have faith in him and to have eternal life. Then I will raise them to life on the last day.
41 The people started grumbling because Jesus had said he was the bread that had come down from heaven. 42 They were asking each other, “Isn't he Jesus, the son of Joseph? Don't we know his father and mother? How can he say that he has come down from heaven?”
43 Jesus told them:
Stop grumbling! 44 No one can come to me, unless the Father who sent me makes them want to come. But if they do come, I will raise them to life on the last day. 45 (C) One of the prophets wrote, “God will teach all of them.” And so everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him will come to me.
46 The only one who has seen the Father is the one who has come from him. No one else has ever seen the Father. 47 I tell you for certain that everyone who has faith in me has eternal life.
48 I am the bread that gives life! 49 Your ancestors ate manna[j] in the desert, and later they died. 50 But the bread from heaven has come down, so that no one who eats it will ever die. 51 I am that bread from heaven! Everyone who eats it will live forever. My flesh is the life-giving bread I give to the people of this world.
52 They started arguing with each other and asked, “How can he give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus answered:
I tell you for certain that you won't live unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man. 54 But if you do eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will have eternal life, and I will raise you to life on the last day. 55 My flesh is the true food, and my blood is the true drink. 56 If you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you are one with me, and I am one with you.
57 The living Father sent me, and I have life because of him. Now everyone who eats my flesh will live because of me. 58 The bread that comes down from heaven isn't like what your ancestors ate. They died, but whoever eats this bread will live forever.
59 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue in Capernaum when he said these things.
The Words of Eternal Life
60 Many of Jesus' disciples heard him and said, “This is too hard for anyone to understand.”
61 Jesus knew that his disciples were grumbling. So he asked, “Does this bother you? 62 What if you should see the Son of Man go up to heaven where he came from? 63 (D) The Spirit is the one who gives life! Human strength can do nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are from that life-giving Spirit. 64 But some of you refuse to have faith in me.” Jesus said this, because from the beginning he knew who would have faith in him. He also knew which one would betray him.
65 Then Jesus said, “You cannot come to me, unless the Father makes you want to come. That is why I have told these things to all of you.”
66 Because of what Jesus said, many of his disciples turned their backs on him and stopped following him. 67 Jesus then asked his twelve disciples if they also were going to leave him. 68 (E) Simon Peter answered, “Lord, there is no one else that we can go to! Your words give eternal life. 69 We have faith in you, and we are sure that you are God's Holy One.”
70 Jesus told his disciples, “I chose all twelve of you, but one of you is a demon!” 71 Jesus was talking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.[k] He would later betray Jesus, even though he was one of the twelve disciples.

Apan mag-unsa man kini sa kadaghan sa mga tawo?” 10 Miingon si Jesus, “Sige, palingkora ninyo ang mga tawo.” Daghang mga balili niadtong mga lugara, busa nanglingkod ang mga tawo. Ang mga lalaki lang mikabat nang daan ug mga 5,000. 11 Unya, gikuha ni Jesus ang pan ug gipasalamatan niya ang Dios, ug giapod-apod ngadto sa mga tawo nga nanglingkod didto. Mao gihapon kini ang iyang gibuhat sa isda, ug silang tanan nangaon kutob sa ilang gusto. 12 Pagkahuman nila ug pangaon, miingon si Jesus sa iyang mga tinun-an, “Tigoma ninyo ang mga sobra aron wala gayoy mausik.” 13 Busa gitigom nila ang tanan nga sobra. Naglakaw si Jesus Ibabaw sa Tubig

16 Sa pagkakilomkilom na, nanglugsong sa baybayon ang iyang mga tinun-an 17 ug nanakay sa sakayan. Ngitngit na, apan wala pa mahiapas kanila si Jesus. Busa misugod na lang sila sa pagtabok balik sa Capernaum. 18 Samtang nanabok sila, kalit nga mikusog ang hangin ug midagko ang mga balod. 19 Sa dihang nakapalayo na sila ug mga lima o kaha unom ka kilometro, nakita nila si Jesus nga nagalakaw ibabaw sa tubig padulong sa ilang sakayan, ug nahadlok sila. 20 Apan si Jesus miingon kanila, “Ayaw kamo kahadlok, ako kini!” 21 Busa gipasakay nila siya. Ug nakaabot dayon sila sa ilang padulngan.
Gipangita sa mga Tawo si Jesus
22-23 Pagkasunod adlaw, wala pa gayod mamahawa ang mga tawo didto sa lugar nga gipakan-an kanila sa Ginoo sa pan nga iyang gipasalamatan sa Dios. Nahibalo sila nga sa miaging gabii may usa lang ka sakayan didto, ug mao kadto ang gisakyan sa mga tinun-an ni Jesus. Nahibalo usab sila nga wala mosakay si Jesus uban sa iyang mga tinun-an. Unya, may miabot nga mga sakayan didto nga gikan sa Tiberias. 24 Busa pagkahibalo sa mga tawo nga wala na didto si Jesus ug ang iyang mga tinun-an, nanakay sila sa mga sakayan ug nangadto sa Capernaum aron pangitaon si Jesus.
Ang Pagkaon nga Nagahatag ug Kinabuhi
25 Pag-abot nila didto sa Capernaum nakita nila si Jesus. Miingon sila, “Magtutudlo, kanus-a ka pa dinhi?” 26 Miingon si Jesus kanila, “Sa pagkatinuod, sultihan ko kamo nga ginapangita ninyo ako dili tungod sa mga milagro nga inyong nakita, kondili tungod kay gipakaon ko kamo ug pan ug nabusog kamo. 27 Apan ayaw kamo paghago alang sa pagkaon nga madunot lang, kondili paghago kamo alang sa pagkaon nga molungtad ug nagahatag ug kinabuhi nga walay kataposan. Ako nga Anak sa Tawo mao ang mohatag kaninyo niini nga pagkaon, kay ako ang gihatagan sa Dios nga Amahan sa katungod nga mohatag niini.” 28 Busa nangutana sila kaniya, “Unsa man ang angay namong buhaton aron masunod namo ang gusto nga ipabuhat sa Dios?” 29 Mitubag si Jesus, “Ang gusto sa Dios nga inyong buhaton mao kini: motuo kamo kanako nga iyang gipadala.” 30 Miingon usab sila, “Unsa man nga milagro ang imong ipakita kanamo aron motuo kami kanimo? 31 Kaniadto ang atong mga katigulangan mikaon sa pagkaon nga gitawag nga manna sa dihang didto pa sila sa kamingawan. Kay nagaingon ang Kasulatan nga gihatagan sila ni Moises ug pagkaon nga gikan sa langit.”[a] 32 Miingon si Jesus kanila, “Sa pagkatinuod, sultihan ko kamo nga dili si Moises ang naghatag ug pagkaon nga gikan sa langit kondili ang akong Amahan. Ug siya mao usab ang nagahatag kaninyo sa tinuod nga pagkaon gikan sa langit. 33 Kay ang pagkaon nga ginahatag sa Dios walay lain kondili siya nga gikan sa langit ug nagahatag ug kinabuhi sa mga tawo dinhi sa kalibotan.” 34 Miingon dayon ang mga tawo, “Hatagi kami kanunay nianang pagkaon nga imong gi-ingon.” 35 Miingon si Jesus, “Ako mao ang pagkaon nga nagahatag ug kinabuhi. Ang nagaduol ug nagatuo kanako dili na gayod pagagutomon o pagauhawon.”
36 “Apan sama sa giingon ko na kaninyo kaniadto, dili gihapon kamo motuo kanako bisan nakita na ninyo ang mga milagro nga akong gibuhat.[b] 37 Ang tanang mga tawo nga ginahatag sa Amahan kanako moduol kanako, ug ang moduol kanako dili ko gayod isalikway. 38 Kay nanaog ako gikan sa langit dili aron tumanon ko ang akong kaugalingon nga kabubut-on, kondili ang kabubut-on sa akong Amahan nga nagpadala kanako. 39 Ug mao kini ang kabubut-on sa nagpadala kanako: nga dili ko pasagdan nga mawala ang bisan usa kanila nga iyang gitugyan kanako, hinuon banhawon ko sila sa kataposan nga adlaw. 40 Kay mao kini ang kabubut-on sa akong Amahan: nga ang tanan nga nagaila ug nagatuo kanako makaangkon sa kinabuhi nga walay kataposan, ug banhawon ko sila sa kataposan nga adlaw.”
41 Nagbagulbol ang mga Judio batok kang Jesus, kay miingon man siya nga siya mao ang kalan-on nga gikan sa langit. 42 Miingon sila, “Si Jesus lang kana nga anak ni Jose. Nganong nagaingon man siya nga gikan siya sa langit, nga nakaila man gani kita sa iyang amahan ug inahan?” 43 Gitubag sila ni Jesus, “Ayaw kamo pagbagulbol. 44 Walay makaduol kanako kon dili tandogon sa Amahan nga nagpadala kanako ang iyang kasingkasing. Ug sila nga moduol kanako banhawon ko sa kataposan nga adlaw. 45 May gisulat ang usa sa mga propeta nga nagaingon, ‘Silang tanan tudloan sa Dios.’[c] Busa ang tanan nga magpatalinghog sa mga gitudlo sa Amahan moduol kanako. 46 Wala kini magpasabot nga may tawo na nga nakakita sa Amahan. Ako nga naggikan sa Dios nga Amahan mao lang gayod ang nakakita kaniya.”
47 “Sa pagkatinuod, sultihan ko kamo nga ang nagatuo kanako adunay kinabuhi nga walay kataposan, 48 tungod kay ako mao ang kalan-on nga nagahatag ug kinabuhi. 49 Ang inyong mga katigulangan mikaon sa kalan-on nga gitawag nga manna sa didto pa sila sa kamingawan, apan nangamatay gihapon sila. 50 Apan ako ang kalan-on nga mikanaog gikan sa langit. Si bisan kinsa nga mokaon niini nga pagkaon dili na mamatay. 51 Ako mao ang buhing kalan-on nga mikanaog gikan sa langit. Si bisan kinsa nga mokaon niini magakinabuhi sa walay kataposan. Tungod kay ang kalan-on nga akong ihatag kaniya mao ang akong lawas. Ihatag ko kini aron makaangkon ang mga tawo dinhi sa kalibotan ug kinabuhi nga walay kataposan.”
52 Naglantugi ang mga Judio nga naminaw kang Jesus. Miingon sila, “Unsaon ba paghatag niini nga tawo kanato sa iyang lawas aron atong kaonon?” 53 Miingon si Jesus kanila, “Sa pagkatinuod, sultihan ko kamo nga kon dili kamo mokaon sa lawas sa Anak sa Tawo ug kon dili kamo moinom sa iyang dugo, dili gayod kamo makabaton sa kinabuhi nga walay kataposan. 54 Apan si bisan kinsa nga mokaon sa akong lawas ug moinom sa akong dugo may kinabuhi nga walay kataposan, ug banhawon ko siya sa kataposan nga adlaw. 55 Kay ang akong lawas mao ang tinuod nga pagkaon ug ang akong dugo mao ang tinuod nga ilimnon.[d] 56 Si bisan kinsa nga nagakaon sa akong lawas ug nagainom sa akong dugo nagapabilin kanako ug ako nagapabilin usab kaniya. 57 Ang Dios nga Amahan nga nagpadala kanako mao ang sinugdanan sa kinabuhi, ug tungod kaniya nagakinabuhi ako. Sama usab niini ang mahitabo sa mga nagakaon kanako, magakinabuhi usab sila tungod kanako. 58 Ako ang kalan-on nga naggikan sa langit. Dili kini sama sa manna nga gikaon sa inyong mga katigulangan, kay nangamatay man gihapon sila. Ang nagakaon niining pagkaon nga akong giingon kaninyo mabuhi sa walay kataposan.” 59 Gisulti kini ni Jesus samtang nagtudlo siya didto sa sinagoga sa mga Judio sa Capernaum.
Ang mga Pulong nga Nagahatag sa Kinabuhi nga Walay Kataposan
60 Daghan sa iyang mga tinun-an ang nakadungog sa iyang gitudlo ug miingon, “Labihan kalisod kining iyang gitudlo, kinsay makadawat niini?” 61 Bisan walay nagsulti kang Jesus, nahibaloan niya nga ang iyang mga tinun-an nagabagulbol tungod niadtong iyang gitudlo. Busa miingon si Jesus kanila, “Nahiubos ba kamo sa akong gisulti? 62 Unsaon na lang kon ako nga Anak sa Tawo makita ninyo nga mokayab balik sa akong sinugdanan? 63 Ang Espiritu Santo mao ang nagahatag sa kinabuhi. Ang tawo dili makahimo niini. Ang akong gisulti kaninyo gikan sa Espiritu Santo, ug nagahatag sa kinabuhi. 64 Apan diha kaninyo adunay mga wala nagatuo kanako.” (Miingon siya niini tungod kay nahibaloan na niyang daan kon kinsa kadtong mga dili motuo ug kon kinsa ang magluib kaniya.) 65 Ug midugang siya pag-ingon, “Mao kini ang hinungdan kon nganong nagaingon ako kaninyo nga walay makaduol kanako kon dili itugot sa Amahan.”
66 Sukad niadto, daghan sa mga tinun-an ni Jesus ang mibiya ug wala na mokuyog kaniya. 67 Busa miingon si Jesus sa iyang 12 ka apostoles, “Mobiya ba usab kamo kanako?” 68 Mitubag si Simon Pedro kaniya, “Ginoo, kang kinsa pa man kami moadto? Ikaw lang ang nagtudlo mahitungod sa kinabuhi nga walay kataposan. 69 Nagatuo kami kanimo tungod kay nahibaloan namo nga ikaw mao gayod ang Balaan nga gipadala sa Dios.” 70 Miingon si Jesus kanila, “Dili ba gipili ko kamong dose? Apan anak sa Yawa[e] ang usa kaninyo!” 71 Ang gitumong ni Jesus mao si Judas nga anak ni Simon Iscariote.[f] Kay bisan tuod si Judas usa sa dose ka mga apostoles, siya mao ang magluib kang Jesus.

6 After (B)these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of (C)Tiberias. 2 Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were (D)diseased.[a] 3 And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.
4 (E)Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. 5 (F)Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to (G)Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” 6 But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.
7 Philip answered Him, (H)“Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.”
8 One of His disciples, (I)Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, (J)but what are they among so many?”
10 Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them [b]to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” 13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly (K)the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
Jesus Walks on the Sea(L)
15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him (M)king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
16 (N)Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 19 So when they had rowed about [c]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were (O)afraid. 20 But He said to them, (P)“It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

22 On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except [d]that one [e]which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone— 23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks— 24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, (Q)seeking Jesus. 25 And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”
26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 (R)Do not labor for the food which perishes, but (S)for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, (T)because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, (U)“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
30 Therefore they said to Him, (V)“What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? 31 (W)Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, (X)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but (Y)My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 (Z)Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
35 And Jesus said to them, (AA)“I am the bread of life. (AB)He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never (AC)thirst. 36 (AD)But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet (AE)do not believe. 37 (AF)All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and (AG)the one who comes to Me I will [f]by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, (AH)not to do My own will, (AI)but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, (AJ)that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, (AK)that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
Rejected by His Own
41 The Jews then [g]complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” 42 And they said, (AL)“Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
43 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, [h]“Do not murmur among yourselves. 44 (AM)No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me (AN)draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, (AO)‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ (AP)Therefore everyone who [i]has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. 46 (AQ)Not that anyone has seen the Father, (AR)except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. 47 Most assuredly, I say to you, (AS)he who believes [j]in Me has everlasting life. 48 (AT)I am the bread of life. 49 (AU)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 (AV)This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread (AW)which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and (AX)the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
52 The Jews therefore (AY)quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”
53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless (AZ)you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. 54 (BA)Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is [k]food indeed, and My blood is [l]drink indeed. 56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (BB)abides in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. 58 (BC)This is the bread which came down from heaven—not (BD)as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”
59 These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Turn Away
60 (BE)Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a [m]hard saying; who can understand it?”
61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples [n]complained about this, He said to them, “Does this [o]offend you? 62 (BF)What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 (BG)It is the Spirit who gives life; the (BH)flesh profits nothing. The (BI)words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But (BJ)there are some of you who do not believe.” For (BK)Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore (BL)I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
66 (BM)From that time many of His disciples went [p]back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (BN)the words of eternal life. 69 (BO)Also we have come to believe and know that You are the [q]Christ, the Son of the living God.”
70 Jesus answered them, (BP)“Did I not choose you, the twelve, (BQ)and one of you is a devil?” 71 He spoke of (BR)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would (BS)betray Him, being one of the twelve.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)
Jesus Walks on the Water(M)
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(P) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(Q) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(R) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(S) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(T) when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(U) not because you saw the signs(V) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(W) to eternal life,(X) which the Son of Man(Y) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(Z) of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(AA) in the one he has sent.”(AB)
30 So they asked him, “What sign(AC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(AD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(AE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”(AF)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(AG) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(AH)
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(AI) the bread of life.(AJ) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(AK) in me will never be thirsty.(AL) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(AM) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(AN) not to do my will but to do the will(AO) of him who sent me.(AP) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AQ) but raise them up at the last day.(AR) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AS) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AT) and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AU) whose father and mother we know?(AV) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AW)
43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(AX) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d](AY) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(AZ) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(BA) 48 I am the bread of life.(BB) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(BC) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(BD) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(BE) that came down from heaven.(BF) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(BG)
52 Then the Jews(BH) began to argue sharply among themselves,(BI) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(BJ) of the Son of Man(BK) and drink his blood,(BL) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(BM) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(BN) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(BO) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(BP) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BQ) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BR)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BS) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BT) ascend to where he was before!(BU) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BV) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BW) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BX) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BY)
66 From this time many of his disciples(BZ) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(CA)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(CB) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(CC) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(CD)
70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,(CE) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”(CF) 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,(CG) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)(CH)
