⁵² The Jews then ^(A)disputed among themselves, saying, ^(B)“How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” ⁵³ So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of ^(C)the Son of Man and drink his blood, you ^(D)have no life in you. ⁵⁴ Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood ^(E)has eternal life, and ^(F)I will raise him up on the last day. ⁵⁵ For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. ⁵⁶ Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood ^(G)abides in me, and I in him. ⁵⁷ As ^(H)the living Father ^(I)sent me, and ^(J)I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. ^58 (K)This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread^[a] the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” ⁵⁹ Jesus^[b] said these things in the synagogue, as he taught ^(L)at Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

^60 (M)When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” ⁶¹ But Jesus, ^(N)knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? ⁶² Then what if you were to see ^(O)the Son of Man ^(P)ascending to ^(Q)where he was before? ^63 (R)It is the Spirit who gives life; ^(S)the flesh is no help at all. ^(T)The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. ⁶⁴ But ^(U)there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus ^(V)knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and ^(W)who it was who would betray him.) ⁶⁵ And he said, “This is why I told you ^(X)that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

⁹ Nicodemus said to him, ^(A)“How can these things be?” ¹⁰ Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel ^(B)and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(C)we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but ^(D)you^[a] do not receive our testimony. ¹² If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ^13 (E)No one has ^(F)ascended into heaven except ^(G)he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.^{[b] 14} And ^(H)as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man ^(I)be lifted up, ¹⁵ that whoever believes ^(J)in him ^(K)may have eternal life.^[c]

¹¹ The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? ^12 (A)Are you greater than our father Jacob? ^(B)He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” ¹³ Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but ^(C)whoever drinks of the water that I will give him ^(D)will never be thirsty again.^[a] The water that I will give him will become ^(E)in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

⁹ I am the door. If anyone enters by me, ^(A)he will be saved and will go in and out and ^(B)find pasture. ¹⁰ The thief comes only to steal and ^(C)kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
