⁴⁹ Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.^(A)

⁵ Though you already know all this,^(A) I want to remind you^(B) that the Lord^[a] at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.^(C)

¹⁷ And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?^{(A) 18} And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest^(B) if not to those who disobeyed?^{(C) 19} So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.^(D)

³ They all ate the same spiritual food^{(A) 4} and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock^(B) that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. ⁵ Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.^(C)

⁵⁸ This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”^(A)

³¹ Our ancestors ate the manna^(A) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’^[a]”^(B)

⁵ Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever?

⁶⁵ For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness,^(A) and not one of them was left except Caleb^(B) son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.^(C)
