John 6:35-71

New International Version

³⁵Then Jesus declared, “I am^(A) the bread of life.^(B) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes^(C) in me will never be thirsty.^(D) ³⁶But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. ³⁷All those the Father gives me^(E) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. ³⁸For I have come down from heaven^(F) not to do my will but to do the will^(G) of him who sent me.^(H) ³⁹And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,^(I) but raise them up at the last day.^(J) ⁴⁰For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son^(K) and believes in him shall have eternal life,^(L) and I will raise them up at the last day.”

⁴¹At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” ⁴²They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,^(M) whose father and mother we know?^(N) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”^(O)

⁴³“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. ⁴⁴“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,^(P) and I will raise them up at the last day. ⁴⁵It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’^[a]^(Q) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. ⁴⁶No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;^(R) only he has seen the Father. ⁴⁷Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.^(S) ⁴⁸I am the bread of life.^(T) ⁴⁹Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.^(U) ⁵⁰But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,^(V) which anyone may eat and not die. ⁵¹I am the living bread^(W) that came down from heaven.^(X) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”^(Y)

⁵²Then the Jews^(Z) began to argue sharply among themselves,^(AA) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

⁵³Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh^(AB) of the Son of Man^(AC) and drink his blood,^(AD) you have no life in you. ⁵⁴Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.^(AE) ⁵⁵For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. ⁵⁶Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.^(AF) ⁵⁷Just as the living Father sent me^(AG) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. ⁵⁸This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”^(AH) ⁵⁹He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

⁶⁰On hearing it, many of his disciples^(AI) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”^(AJ)

⁶¹Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?^(AK) ⁶²Then what if you see the Son of Man^(AL) ascend to where he was before!^(AM) ⁶³The Spirit gives life;^(AN) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit^[b] and life. ⁶⁴Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known^(AO) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.^(AP) ⁶⁵He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”^(AQ)

⁶⁶From this time many of his disciples^(AR) turned back and no longer followed him.

⁶⁷“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.^(AS)

⁶⁸Simon Peter answered him,^(AT) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.^(AU) ⁶⁹We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”^(AV)

⁷⁰Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you,^(AW) the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!”^(AX) ⁷¹(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot,^(AY) who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)^(AZ)

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven^(A) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.^(B) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.^(C) ²For you granted him authority over all people^(D) that he might give eternal life^(E) to all those you have given him.^(F) ³Now this is eternal life: that they know you,^(G) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.^(H) ⁴I have brought you glory^(I) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.^(J) ⁵And now, Father, glorify me^(K) in your presence with the glory I had with you^(L) before the world began.^(M)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

⁶“I have revealed you^[a]^(N) to those whom you gave me^(O) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. ⁷Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. ⁸For I gave them the words you gave me^(P) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,^(Q) and they believed that you sent me.^(R) ⁹I pray for them.^(S) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,^(T) for they are yours. ¹⁰All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.^(U) And glory has come to me through them. ¹¹I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,^(V) and I am coming to you.^(W) Holy Father, protect them by the power of^[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one^(X) as we are one.^(Y) ¹²While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by^[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost^(Z) except the one doomed to destruction^(AA) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.^(AB)

¹³“I am coming to you now,^(AC) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy^(AD) within them. ¹⁴I have given them your word and the world has hated them,^(AE) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.^(AF) ¹⁵My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.^(AG) ¹⁶They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.^(AH) ¹⁷Sanctify them by^[d] the truth; your word is truth.^(AI) ¹⁸As you sent me into the world,^(AJ) I have sent them into the world.^(AK) ¹⁹For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.^(AL)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

²⁰“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, ²¹that all of them may be one,^(AM) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.^(AN) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.^(AO) ²²I have given them the glory that you gave me,^(AP) that they may be one as we are one^(AQ)— ²³I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me^(AR) and have loved them^(AS) even as you have loved me.

²⁴“Father, I want those you have given me^(AT) to be with me where I am,^(AU) and to see my glory,^(AV) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.^(AW)

²⁵“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,^(AX) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.^(AY)
