²⁸ Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing ^(A)the works of God?” ²⁹ Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, ^(B)that you believe in him whom ^(C)he has sent.” ³⁰ So they said to him, ^(D)“Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? ^31 (E)Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ^(F)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” ³² Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. ³³ For the bread of God is ^(G)he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” ³⁴ They said to him, ^(H)“Sir, give us this bread always.”

³⁵ Jesus said to them, ^(I)“I am the bread of life; ^(J)whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

⁷ A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ^(A)“Give me a drink.” ⁸ (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) ⁹ The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (^(B)For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) ¹⁰ Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you ^(C)living water.” ¹¹ The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? ^12 (D)Are you greater than our father Jacob? ^(E)He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” ¹³ Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but ^(F)whoever drinks of the water that I will give him ^(G)will never be thirsty again.^[a] The water that I will give him will become ^(H)in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Bitter Water Made Sweet

²² Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of ^(A)Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. ²³ When they came to ^(B)Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah.^{[a] 24} And the people ^(C)grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” ²⁵ And he ^(D)cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log,^[b] and he ^(E)threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

There the Lord^[c] made for them a statute and a rule, and there he ^(F)tested them, ²⁶ saying, ^(G)“If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the ^(H)diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, ^(I)your healer.”

²⁷ Then ^(J)they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there by the water.

¹⁵ When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, ^(A)“What is it?”^[a] For they ^(B)did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, ^(C)“It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. ¹⁶ This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an ^(D)omer,^[b] according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’” ¹⁷ And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less.

⁵ And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with ^(A)which you struck the Nile, and go. ^6 (B)Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. ⁷ And he called the name of the place ^(C)Massah^[a] and ^(D)Meribah,^[b] because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
