16 Therefore, the Jews began persecuting(A) Jesus[a] because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.(B)

17 Jesus responded to them, “My Father(C) is still working, and I am working also.” 18 This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill him:(D) Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

16 So the Jewish leaders began harassing[a] Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules. 17 But Jesus replied, “My Father is always working, and so am I.” 18 So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.
