A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda
5 After (A)this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus (B)went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem (C)by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, [a]Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, [b]paralyzed, [c]waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
8 Jesus said to him, (D)“Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.
And (E)that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; (F)it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”
11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”
12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the one who was (G)healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. (H)Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
Honor the Father and the Son
16 For this reason the Jews (I)persecuted Jesus, [d]and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, (J)“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
18 Therefore the Jews (K)sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, (L)making Himself equal with God. 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (M)the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. 20 For (N)the Father loves the Son, and (O)shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, (P)even so the Son gives life to whom He will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but (Q)has committed all judgment to the Son, 23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. (R)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Life and Judgment Are Through the Son
24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, (S)he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, (T)but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when (U)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For (V)as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have (W)life in Himself, 27 and (X)has given Him authority to execute judgment also, (Y)because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will (Z)hear His voice 29 (AA)and come forth—(AB)those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. 30 (AC)I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because (AD)I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
The Fourfold Witness
31 (AE)“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not [e]true. 32 (AF)There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. 33 You have sent to John, (AG)and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. 35 He was the burning and (AH)shining lamp, and (AI)you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36 But (AJ)I have a greater witness than John’s; for (AK)the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very (AL)works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, (AM)has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, (AN)nor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39 (AO)You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and (AP)these are they which testify of Me. 40 (AQ)But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
41 (AR)“I do not receive honor from men. 42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44 (AS)How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek (AT)the honor that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; (AU)there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; (AV)for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you (AW)do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

The Healing at Bethesda
5 After these things there was (A)a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now in Jerusalem, by (B)the Sheep Gate, there is a pool which (C)in [a]Hebrew is called [b]Bethesda, having five [c]porticoes. 3 In these porticoes lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, limping, or [d]paralyzed.[e] 5 Now a man was there who had been [f]ill for thirty-eight years. 6 Jesus, upon seeing this man lying there and knowing that he had already been in that condition for a long time, *said to him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus *said to him, “(D)Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” 9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.
(E)Now it was a Sabbath on that day. 10 So (F)the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is a Sabbath, and (G)it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” 11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk’?” 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 14 Afterward, Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not (H)sin anymore, (I)so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and informed (J)the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason (K)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on a Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father [g]is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
Jesus’ Equality with God
18 For this reason therefore (L)the Jews (M)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (N)making Himself equal with God.
19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (O)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever [h]the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way. 20 (P)For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (Q)greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (R)gives them life, so (S)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (T)He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. (U)The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Two Resurrections
25 Truly, truly, I say to you, [i](Y)a time is coming and [j]even now has arrived, when (Z)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (AA)hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He (AB)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to (AC)execute judgment, because He is [k]the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this; for [l](AD)a time is coming when (AE)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come out: (AF)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
30 “(AG)I can do nothing [m]on My own. As I hear, I judge; and (AH)My judgment is [n]righteous, because I do not seek My own will but (AI)the will of Him who sent Me.
31 “(AJ)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [o]true. 32 There is (AK)another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
Testimony of John the Baptist
33 You have sent messengers to John, and he (AL)has testified to the truth. 34 But (AM)the testimony I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (AN)the lamp that was burning and shining, and you (AO)were willing to rejoice for [p]a while in his light.
Testimony of Works
36 But the testimony I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (AP)the works which the Father has given Me (AQ)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (AR)has sent Me.
Testimony of the Father
37 And the Father who sent Me, (AS)He has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 Also you do not have (AT)His word remaining in you, because you do not believe Him whom He (AU)sent.
Testimony of the Scripture
39 [q](AV)You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is (AW)those very Scriptures that testify about Me; 40 and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41 (AX)I do not receive glory from people; 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not [r]receive Me; (AY)if another comes in his own name, you will [s]receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you [t](AZ)accept [u]glory from one another and you do not seek (BA)the [v]glory that is from (BB)the one and only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (BC)Moses, in whom you have put your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for (BD)he wrote about Me. 47 But (BE)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Vstaň a choď
5 Potom byl další židovský svátek, a tak se Ježíš vydal do Jeruzaléma. 2 V Jeruzalémě je u Ovčí brány rybník hebrejsky zvaný Bethesda, [a] u něhož je pět sloupořadí. 3 [4] Ležela tam spousta nemocných, slepých, chromých a ochrnutých. [b] 5 Byl mezi nimi jeden člověk, nemocný už třicet osm let.
6 Ježíš viděl, jak tam leží, a poznal, že je už dlouho nemocen. „Chceš být uzdraven?“ zeptal se ho.
7 „Pane, nemám nikoho, kdo by mě snesl do rybníka, když se zvíří voda,“ odpověděl mu nemocný. „Když tam zamířím, někdo mě předstihne.“
8 „Vstaň, vezmi si lehátko a choď!“ řekl mu Ježíš. 9 A ten člověk byl ihned uzdraven, vzal své lehátko a začal chodit.
Ten den však byla sobota. 10 Židovští představení tedy uzdraveného napomínali: „Je sobota, nesmíš nosit lehátko!“
11 On jim však odpověděl: „Ten, kdo mě uzdravil, mi řekl: ‚Vezmi si lehátko a choď.‘“
12 „Kdo ti mohl říci: ‚Vezmi si lehátko a choď‘?!“ ptali se ho. 13 To ovšem ten uzdravený nevěděl; Ježíš se totiž vmísil do okolního davu.
14 Potom ho Ježíš nalezl v chrámě a řekl mu: „Pohleď, jsi uzdraven. Už nehřeš, ať se ti nepřihodí něco horšího.“ 15 Ten člověk pak odešel a oznámil židovským představeným, že ho uzdravil Ježíš.
Syn dělá to, co Otec
16 Židovští představení tedy začali Ježíše pronásledovat, protože to udělal v sobotu. 17 Ježíš jim odpověděl: „Můj Otec pracuje i dnes; proto pracuji i já.“ 18 A kvůli tomu ho chtěli zabít ještě více, neboť nejenom rušil sobotu, ale ještě nazýval Boha svým vlastním Otcem, a tak se dělal rovným Bohu.
19 Ježíš jim odpověděl: „Amen, amen, říkám vám: Syn nemůže sám od sebe dělat nic, jedině to, co vidí dělat Otce. Cokoli dělá on, to podobně dělá i Syn. 20 Otec miluje Syna a ukazuje mu všechno, co sám dělá; a ukáže mu ještě větší skutky, abyste jen žasli. 21 Neboť jako Otec křísí mrtvé a dává život, tak i Syn dává život těm, kterým chce. 22 Otec nikoho nesoudí, ale svěřil veškerý soud Synu, 23 aby všichni ctili Syna, jako ctí Otce. Kdo nectí Syna, nectí ani Otce, který ho poslal.
24 Amen, amen, říkám vám: Kdo slyší mé slovo a věří Tomu, který mě poslal, má věčný život a nepřijde na soud, ale již přešel ze smrti do života.
25 Amen, amen, říkám vám: Přichází chvíle, a už je tu, kdy mrtví uslyší hlas Božího Syna a ti, kteří uslyší, budou žít. 26 Jako má Otec život sám v sobě, tak dal i Synu, aby měl život sám v sobě, 27 a dal mu také pravomoc konat soud, protože je Syn člověka. 28 Nedivte se tomu; přichází totiž chvíle, kdy všichni, kteří jsou v hrobech, uslyší jeho hlas 29 a vyjdou – ti, kdo konali dobro, budou vzkříšeni k životu, ale ti, kdo konali zlo, budou vzkříšeni k soudu.
30 Sám od sebe nemohu dělat nic. Jak slyším, tak soudím a můj soud je spravedlivý, protože nehledám svou vůli, ale vůli Toho, který mě poslal.
31 Svědčím-li sám o sobě, mé svědectví není pravé. 32 Svědčí však o mně někdo jiný a vím, že jeho svědectví o mně je pravdivé. 33 Poslali jste k Janovi a ten vydal svědectví pravdě. 34 Já ovšem nepřijímám svědectví od člověka, ale toto říkám pro vaši záchranu. 35 On byl hořící a zářící lampou, vy jste se však chtěli v jeho světle poradovat jen na čas. 36 Mám ale větší svědectví než Janovo: skutky, které mi dal Otec, abych je vykonal. Samotné skutky, které dělám, o mně svědčí, že mě poslal Otec. 37 A sám Otec, který mě poslal, o mně vydal svědectví. Vy jste ale nikdy neslyšeli jeho hlas a neviděli jeho tvář. 38 Jeho slovo ve vás nezůstává, neboť nevěříte tomu, kterého on poslal. 39 Zkoumáte Písma, neboť se domníváte, že v nich máte věčný život, a ta svědčí o mně. 40 Nechcete ale ke mně přijít, abyste měli život.
41 Nepřijímám chválu od lidí, 42 ale poznal jsem, že v sobě nemáte Boží lásku. 43 Já jsem přišel ve jménu svého Otce, a nepřijímáte mě. Kdyby jiný přišel ve svém vlastním jménu, toho přijmete. 44 Jak byste vůbec mohli uvěřit? Přijímáte chválu jedni od druhých, ale chválu, která je od samotného Boha, nehledáte.
45 Nemyslete si, že já vás budu žalovat před Otcem. Ten, kdo na vás žaluje, je Mojžíš, v něhož doufáte. 46 Kdybyste věřili Mojžíšovi, věřili byste i mně, neboť on psal o mně. 47 Když ale nevěříte jeho spisům, jak uvěříte mým slovům?“
