The Third Sign: Healing the Sick
5 After this, a Jewish festival took place, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(A) 2 By the Sheep Gate(B) in Jerusalem there is a pool, called Bethesda[a] in Hebrew, which has five colonnades.[b] 3 Within these lay a large number of the sick—blind, lame, and paralyzed [—waiting for the moving of the water, 4 because an angel would go down into the pool from time to time and stir up the water. Then the first one who got in after the water was stirred up recovered from whatever ailment he had].[c]
5 One man was there who had been sick for 38 years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had already been there a long time,(C) He said to him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 “Sir,”(D) the sick man answered, “I don’t have a man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me.”
8 “Get up,” Jesus told him, “pick up your mat and walk!” 9 Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk.
Now that day was the Sabbath,(E) 10 so the Jews(F) said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath!(G) It’s illegal for you to pick up your mat.”
11 He replied, “The man who made me well(H) told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”
12 “Who is this man who told you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk’?” they asked. 13 But the man who was cured did not know who it was,(I) because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.[d]
14 After this, Jesus found him in the temple complex(J) and said to him, “See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.” 15 The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.(K)
Honoring the Father and the Son
16 Therefore, the Jews began persecuting(L) Jesus[e] because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.(M) 17 But Jesus responded to them, “My Father(N) is still working, and I am working also.” 18 This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill Him:(O) Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
19 Then Jesus replied, “I assure you: The Son is not able to do anything on His own, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[f] does, the Son also does these things in the same way.(P) 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him everything He is doing, and He will show Him greater works(Q) than these so that you will be amazed. 21 And just as the Father raises(R) the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to anyone He wants to.(S) 22 The Father,(T) in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all people will honor the Son just as they honor the Father.(U) Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.(V)
Life and Judgment
24 “I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life(W) and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.
25 “I assure you: An hour is coming, and is now here,(X) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.(Y) 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son(Z) to have life in Himself. 27 And He has granted Him the right to pass judgment,(AA) because He is the Son of Man.(AB) 28 Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come out—those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of judgment.
30 “I can do nothing on My own. I judge only as I hear, and My judgment(AC) is righteous,(AD) because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.(AE)
Four Witnesses to Jesus
31 “If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.[g] 32 There is Another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony He gives about Me is valid.[h](AF) 33 You have sent messengers to John, and he has testified to the truth.(AG) 34 I don’t receive man’s testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 John[i](AH) was a burning and shining lamp,(AI) and for a time you were willing to enjoy his light.(AJ)
36 “But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish.(AK) These very works I am doing testify about Me that the Father has sent(AL) Me. 37 The Father who sent Me has Himself testified(AM) about Me. You have not heard His voice at any time, and you haven’t seen His form.(AN) 38 You don’t have His word living in you, because you don’t believe the One He sent. 39 You pore over[j] the Scriptures(AO) because you think you have eternal life in them, yet they testify about Me.(AP) 40 And you are not willing(AQ) to come to Me(AR) so that you may have life.
41 “I do not accept glory(AS) from men, 42 but I know you—that you have no love for God(AT) within you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name,(AU) yet you don’t accept Me.(AV) If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe? While accepting glory from one another, you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only(AW) God.(AX) 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(AY) on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me. 47 But if you don’t believe his writings,(AZ) how will you believe My words?”(BA)

5 얼마 뒤에, 예수께서 유대 사람의 명절을 지키러 예루살렘으로 올라가셨다. 2 예루살렘에는 아람 말[a]로 베드자다[b]라고 하는 못이 있었다. 그 못은 ‘양의 문’[c] 가까이에 있었다. 그리고 못 둘레에는 다섯 개의 행각[d]이 서 있었다. 3 여기에 눈먼 사람, 다리를 저는 사람, 중풍병 환자 같은 많은 병자들이 누워 있었다[e]. 4 [f] 5 그곳에 있는 사람 가운데에는 삼십팔 년 동안 다리를 못 쓰고 누워 있는 남자가 있었다. 6 예수께서 그 사람을 보시고 병이 아주 오래되었다는 것을 아셨다. 예수께서 그에게 물으셨다. “네 병이 낫기를 바라느냐?”
7 그 사람이 대답하였다. “네, 선생님. 그렇지만 물이 움직일 때, 저를 도와서 못 안으로 들어가게 해 줄 사람이 없습니다. 저 혼자 들어가려고 하는 동안에 다른 사람이 먼저 들어가 버립니다.”
8 그러자 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “일어나라! 네 자리를 걷어 가지고 걸어가거라.”
9 곧바로 그의 병이 나았다. 그는 자리를 걷어 가지고 걸어갔다.
그날은 안식일이었다. 10 그래서 유대 사람들은 병이 나은 사람에게 이렇게 말하였다. “오늘은 안식일이오. 안식일에 자리를 들고 가는 것은 법에 어긋나오.”
11 그가 대답하였다. “내 병을 고쳐 주신 분이 ‘자리를 들고 걸어가거라.’ 하고 말씀하셨소.”
12 유대 사람들이 그에게 물었다. “당신더러 자리를 들고 걸어가라고 한 그 사람이 누구요?”
13 그러나 병이 나은 사람은 자기를 고쳐 주신 분이 누구인지 몰랐다. 예수께서 그곳에 있던 무리 속으로 사라지셨기 때문이다.
14 그 뒤에 예수께서 그 사람을 성전에서 만나서 말씀하셨다. “보라, 지금은 네가 말끔히 나았다. 다시는 죄를 짓지 말아라. 그렇지 않으면 더 나쁜 일이 네게 생길지도 모른다.”
15 그 사람은 유대 사람들에게 가서 자기를 낫게 해 준 사람이 예수라고 말하였다.
16 예수께서 이런 일들을 안식일에 하고 계셨으므로, 유대 사람들은 예수를 박해하기 시작하였다. 17 그러나 예수께서 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “내 아버지께서는 바로 오늘까지도 쉬지 않고 일하고 계신다. 그래서 나도 일한다.”
18 이 말씀 때문에 유대 사람들은 더욱 예수를 죽이고 싶어하였다. 그것은 예수께서 안식일을 지키지 않을 뿐만 아니라, 하나님을 자기의 아버지라고 불러서 자신을 하나님과 같은 자리에 올려놓았기 때문이다.
하나님의 권한을 가지신 예수
19 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 진정으로 말한다. 아들은 혼자만의 생각으로는 아무 일도 할 수 없다. 그는 아버지께서 하시는 일을 보고 그 일을 따라 할 뿐이다. 아버지께서 무슨 일을 하시든지 아들도 그 일을 한다. 20 아버지께서는 아들을 사랑하시며, 아들에게 아버지께서 하시는 일을 모두 보여 주신다. 그러나 아버지께서는 이 사람의 병을 고치는 일보다 더 놀라운 일들을 아들에게 보여 주실 것이다. 너희는 그 일들을 보고 놀랄 것이다. 21 아버지께서 죽은 사람들을 다시 일으키어 그들에게 생명을 주시는 것과 마찬가지로, 아들도 아들이 살리고 싶은 사람들에게 생명을 준다. 22 더구나 아버지께서는 아무도 심판하지 않으시고, 심판할 일을 모두 아들에게 맡기셨다. 23 그것은, 모든 사람이 아버지를 존경하는 것처럼 아들도 존경하게 하려는 것이다. 아들을 존경하지 않는 사람은, 아들을 보내신 아버지를 존경하지 않는 것이다.
24 내가 진정으로 말한다. 누구든지 내 말을 듣고 나를 보내신 분을 믿는 사람은 영원한 생명을 얻었으며, 심판을 받지 않을 것이다. 그는 이미 죽음을 벗어나 생명으로 들어섰다. 25 내가 진정으로 말한다. 죽은 사람들이 하나님의 아들의 목소리를 들을 때가 온다. 지금이 바로 그때이다. 그리고 그 목소리를 듣는 사람들은 살 것이다. 26 그것은 아버지께서 자기 안에 생명을 가지고 계신 것처럼, 아들도 자기 안에 생명을 가지도록 허락하셨기 때문이다. 27 또 아버지께서는 아들에게 모든 사람을 심판할 권한을 주셨다. 그가 사람의 아들이기 때문이다. 28 너희는 이 말에 놀라지 말아라. 무덤 속에 있는 사람들이 모두 그의 목소리를 듣고 29 무덤에서 나올 때가 올 것이다. 그때에 선한 일을 한 사람들은 일어나 생명을 얻고, 악한 일을 한 사람들은 일어나 정죄받을 것이다.
유대 사람들에게 계속 말씀하시다
30 나는 아무것도 내 마음대로 할 수 없다. 나는 아버지께서 하라고 하시는 대로 심판한다. 그러니 내 심판은 올바르다. 그것은 내가 내 뜻대로 하지 않고, 나를 보내신 분의 뜻대로 하기 때문이다.
31 내가 나 자신에 대하여 증언하면, 내 증언은 참되지 못하다. 32 나를 위하여 증언해 주는 사람이 따로 있다. 나는, 나에 대한 그의 증언이 참되다는 것을 안다.
33 너희가 요한에게 사람들을 보냈을 때, 그는 진리에 대하여 증언하였다. 34 나는 사람의 증언이 필요하지 않다. 다만 너희가 구원[g]을 받게 하려고 이 말을 하는 것이다. 35 요한은 밝게 타오르며 빛을 내는 등불이었다. 너희는 그의 빛을 보고 한동안 기뻐하려 하였다.
36 그러나 내게는 요한의 증언보다 더 무게 있는 증언이 있다. 나는 아버지께서 내게 완수하라고 맡기신 일들을 하고 있다. 그러니 내가 하고 있는 바로 그 일들이, 아버지께서 나를 보내셨다는 것을 증언한다. 37 그리고 나를 보내신 아버지께서 몸소 나에 대하여 증언하셨다. 그러나 너희는 한 번도 그분의 목소리를 듣지 않았고, 그분의 모습을 보지도 않았다. 38 그리고 그분의 말씀을 너희 마음에 새겨 두지도 않는다. 너희가 아버지께서 보내신 이를 믿지 않기 때문이다. 39 너희는 성경[h]에서 영원한 생명을 찾으리라고 생각하여 부지런히 성경을 연구한다. 바로 그 성경이 나에 대하여 증언하고 있다. 40 그러나 너희는 생명을 얻으러 나에게 오려고 하지 않는다.
41 나는 사람에게서 영광을 얻으려 하지 않는다. 42 나는 너희 속에 하나님에 대한 사랑이 없다는 것을 안다. 43 나는 내 아버지의 이름으로 왔다. 그러나 너희는 나를 받아들이지 않는다. 그러나 어떤 사람이 자기 이름으로 오면, 너희는 그를 받아들일 것이다. 44 너희는 서로 영광을 주고받으면서, 오직 한 분이신 하나님의 영광은 얻으려고 애쓰지 않는다. 그러니 너희가 어떻게 믿을 수 있겠느냐? 45 그러나 내가 너희를 걸어서 아버지께 고발하리라고는 생각하지 말아라. 너희가 희망을 걸어 온 모세가 오히려 너희를 고발할 것이다. 46 만일 너희가 모세를 믿었더라면 나를 믿을 것이다. 모세가 기록한 것이 나를 두고 한 것이기 때문이다. 47 너희가 모세의 글도 믿지 않으니, 어떻게 내 말을 믿겠느냐?”
