耶穌在畢士大池邊治病

5 這事以後，猶太人的一個節期到了，耶穌便上耶路撒冷。 2 耶路撒冷靠近羊門的地方有一個水池，希伯來話叫畢士大，池邊有五條走廊， 3 裡面躺著瞎眼的、瘸腿的、癱瘓的等許多病人。 4 他們都在等候天使來攪動池水。水動時，第一個下去的，無論患了什麼病都會痊癒。[a]

5 那裡有一個人病了三十八年。 6 耶穌看他躺著，知道他病了很久，就問他：「你想痊癒嗎？」

7 那人回答說：「先生，水動的時候，沒有人把我放進池子裡，我要下去的時候，別人總是先我一步。」

8 耶穌對他說：「起來，拿起你的墊子走吧！」

9 那人立刻痊癒了，拿起墊子開始行走。那天正好是安息日， 10 猶太人便對那人說：「今天是安息日，你不可拿著墊子走路。」

11 他說：「那位醫好我的叫我拿起墊子走。」

12 他們問他：「叫你拿起墊子走的人是誰？」

13 那人不知道是誰，因為那裡人多，耶穌已經躲開了。

14 後來，耶穌在聖殿裡遇見他，對他說：「現在你已經完全好了，別再犯罪了，免得你遭遇更不幸的事。」

15 那人便去告訴猶太人醫好他的是耶穌。 16 因為耶穌在安息日給人治病，猶太人開始迫害祂。 17 耶穌對他們說：「我父一直在工作，我也一直在工作。」

18 猶太人聽了，更想殺祂，因祂不但違犯了安息日的規矩，還稱上帝為父，把自己看作與上帝平等。

聖子的權柄

19 耶穌說：「我實實在在地告訴你們，子憑自己什麼都不能做，唯有看見父做什麼，子才做什麼。無論父做什麼，子也照樣做。 20 父因為愛子，便把自己的一切作為給祂看，而且還要把比這些更大的作為給祂看，叫你們驚奇。 21 父如何使死人復活、賜生命給他們，子也照樣想賜生命給誰，就賜給誰。 22 父不審判人，祂將審判的事全交給子， 23 叫人尊敬子如同尊敬父。不尊敬子的，就是不尊敬差子來的父。

24 「我實實在在地告訴你們，誰聽從我的話，又信差我來的那位，誰就有永生，不被定罪，已經出死入生了。 25 我實實在在地告訴你們，時候快到了，現在就是，死人將聽見上帝兒子的聲音，聽見的將存活。 26 因為正如父自己是生命的源頭，祂也同樣讓子作生命的源頭， 27 又把審判的權柄交給祂，因為祂是人子。 28 你們不要因此而驚奇，時候一到，一切在墳墓裡的死人都要聽見上帝兒子的聲音， 29 他們都要從墳墓裡出來。行善的人復活後得永生，作惡的人復活後被定罪。」

見證耶穌

30 耶穌繼續說：「我憑自己不能做什麼，我按父上帝的旨意審判，我的審判是公平的；因為我不是按自己的旨意行，而是按差我來者的旨意行。

31 「如果我為自己做見證，我的見證是無效的。 32 然而，有別的人給我做見證，我知道他為我做的見證是真實的。 33 你們曾派人到約翰那裡，他為真理做過見證。 34 其實我並不需要人的見證，我之所以提起這些事是為了使你們得救。 35 約翰是一盞點亮的明燈，你們情願暫時享受他的光。 36 但是我有比約翰更大的見證，因為父交待我去完成的工作，就是我現在所做的工作，證明我是父差來的。 37 差我來的父曾親自為我做過見證。你們從未聽過祂的聲音，從未見過祂， 38 心裡也沒有祂的道，因為你們不信祂所差來的那位。 39 你們研讀聖經，以為從聖經中可以得到永生。其實為我做見證的正是這聖經， 40 但你們卻不肯到我這裡來得生命。

41 「我不接受人所給予的榮耀， 42 我知道你們沒有愛上帝的心。 43 我奉我父的名來，你們不接受我；若有人奉自己的名來，你們卻接受他。 44 你們喜歡互相恭維，卻不追求從獨一上帝來的榮耀，怎能信我呢？ 45 不要以為我會在父面前控告你們，其實控告你們的是你們一直信賴的摩西。 46 你們若信摩西，就應該信我，因為他的書裡也提到我。 47 如果你們連他寫的都不信，又怎能信我的話呢？」

The Healing at the Pool

5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)

A Paralytic Is Healed

5 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool called in Aramaic Bethzatha,[a] which has five porticoes. 3 In these were lying a large number of those who were sick, blind, lame, paralyzed.[b] 5 And a certain man was there who had been thirty-eight years in his sickness. 6 Jesus, when he[c] saw this one lying there and knew that he had been sick[d] a long time already, said to him, “Do you want to become well?” 7 The one who was sick answered him, “Sir, I do not have anyone that, whenever the water is stirred up, could put me into the pool. But while[e] I am coming, another goes down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk!” 9 And immediately the man became well and picked up his mat and began to walk.[f] (Now it was the Sabbath on that day.)

10 So the Jews were saying to the one who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not permitted for you to pick up the mat!”[g] 11 But he answered them, “The one who made me well—that one said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk!’” 12 So they asked him,[h] “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your mat[i] and walk?’” 13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn while[j] a crowd was in the place.

Equal with God

14 After these things Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “Look, you have become well! Sin no longer, lest something worse happen to you.” 15 The man went and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the one who made him well. 16 And on account of this the Jews began to persecute[k] Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But he answered[l] them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” 18 So on account of this the Jews were seeking even more to kill him, because he not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God his own Father, thus[m] making himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

19 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing from himself except what he sees the Father doing. For whatever that one does, these things also the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything that he himself is doing. And greater works than these he will show him, so that you will be astonished. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and makes them[n] alive, thus also the Son makes alive whomever he wishes. 22 For the Father does not judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to the Son, 23 in order that all people[o] will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly I say to you that the one who hears my word and who believes the one who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

25 “Truly, truly I say to you, that an hour is coming—and now is here—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and the ones who hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in himself, thus also he has granted to the Son to have life in himself. 27 And he has granted him authority to carry out judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be astonished at this, because an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and they will come out—those who have done good things to a resurrection of life, but those who have practiced evil things to a resurrection of judgment. 30 I am able to do nothing from myself. Just as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the one who sent me.

Further Testimony About the Son

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true. 33 You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. 34 (And I do not receive testimony from people, but I say these things in order that you may be saved.) 35 That one was the lamp which was burning and shining, and you wanted to rejoice for an hour in his light.

36 “But I have a testimony greater than John’s, for the works which the Father has given to me that I should complete them—the very works which I am doing—these testify about me, that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me, that one has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his form. 38 And you do not have his word residing in yourselves, because the one whom that one sent, in this one you do not believe. 39 You search[p] the scriptures because you think that you have eternal life in them, and it is these that testify about me. 40 And you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.

41 “I do not accept glory[q] from people, 42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me. If another should come in his own name, you would accept that one! 44 How are you able to believe, if you[r] accept glory from one another, and do not seek the glory which is from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father! The one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have put your hope! 46 For if you had believed Moses, you would believe me, for that one wrote about me. 47 But if you do not believe that one’s writings, how will you believe my words?”

5 Después de esto, Jesús subió a Jerusalén con motivo de una fiesta judía. 2 Hay en Jerusalén, cerca de la puerta llamada de las Ovejas, un estanque conocido con el nombre hebreo de Betzata, que tiene cinco soportales. 3 En estos soportales había una multitud de enfermos recostados en el suelo: ciegos, cojos y paralíticos. 5 Había entre ellos un hombre que llevaba enfermo treinta y ocho años. 6 Jesús, al verlo allí tendido y sabiendo que llevaba tanto tiempo, le preguntó:

— ¿Quieres curarte?

7 El enfermo le contestó:

— Señor, no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque una vez que el agua ha sido agitada. Cuando llego, ya otro se me ha adelantado.

8 Entonces Jesús le ordenó:

— Levántate, recoge tu camilla y vete.

9 En aquel mismo instante, el enfermo quedó curado, recogió su camilla y comenzó a andar. Pero aquel día era sábado. 10 Así que los judíos dijeron al que había sido curado:

— Hoy es sábado y está prohibido que cargues con tu camilla.

11 Él respondió:

— El que me curó me dijo que recogiera mi camilla y me fuera.

12 Ellos le preguntaron:

— ¿Quién es ese hombre que te dijo que recogieras tu camilla y te fueras?

13 Pero el que había sido curado no lo sabía, pues Jesús había desaparecido entre la muchedumbre allí reunida.

14 Poco después, Jesús se encontró con él en el Templo y le dijo:

— Ya ves que has sido curado; no vuelvas a pecar para que no te suceda algo peor.

15 Se marchó aquel hombre e hizo saber a los judíos que era Jesús quien lo había curado. 16 Y como Jesús no se privaba de hacer tales cosas en sábado, los judíos no dejaban de perseguirlo. 17 Pero él les replicaba diciendo:

— Mi Padre no cesa nunca de trabajar, y lo mismo hago yo.

18 Esta afirmación provocó en los judíos un mayor deseo de matarlo, porque no sólo no respetaba el sábado, sino que además decía que Dios era su propio Padre, haciéndose así igual a Dios.

La autoridad del Hijo

19 Jesús, entonces, se dirigió a ellos diciendo:

— Yo os aseguro que el Hijo no puede hacer nada por su propia cuenta; él hace únicamente lo que ve hacer al Padre. Lo que hace el Padre, eso hace también el Hijo. 20 Pues el Padre ama al Hijo y le hace partícipe de todas sus obras. Y le hará partícipe de cosas mayores todavía, de modo que vosotros mismos quedaréis maravillados. 21 Porque así como el Padre resucita a los muertos, dándoles vida, así también el Hijo da vida a los que quiere.

22 El Padre no juzga a nadie; todo el poder de juzgar se lo ha dado al Hijo. 23 Y quiere que todos den al Hijo el mismo honor que dan al Padre. El que no honra al Hijo, tampoco honra al Padre que lo ha enviado. 24 Yo os aseguro que el que acepta mi palabra y cree en el que me ha enviado, tiene vida eterna; no será condenado, sino que ha pasado ya de la muerte a la vida.

25 Os aseguro que está llegando el momento, mejor dicho, ha llegado ya, en que los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios, y los que la oigan volverán a la vida. 26 Pues lo mismo que el Padre tiene la vida en sí mismo, también le concedió al Hijo el tenerla, 27 y le dio autoridad para juzgar, porque es el Hijo del hombre. 28 No os admiréis de lo que estoy diciendo, porque llegará el momento en que todos los muertos oirán su voz 29 y saldrán de las tumbas. Los que hicieron el bien, para una resurrección de vida; los que obraron el mal, para una resurrección de condena.

Testigos a favor de Jesús

30 Yo no puedo hacer nada por mi propia cuenta. Conforme el Padre me dicta, así juzgo. Mi juicio es justo, porque no pretendo actuar según mis deseos, sino según los deseos del que me ha enviado. 31 Si me presentara como testigo de mí mismo, mi testimonio carecería de valor. 32 Es otro el que testifica a mi favor, y yo sé que su testimonio a mi favor es plenamente válido.

33 Vosotros mismos enviasteis una comisión a preguntar a Juan, y él dio testimonio a favor de la verdad. 34 Y no es que yo tenga necesidad de testimonios humanos; si digo esto, es para que vosotros podáis salvaros. 35 Juan el Bautista era como una lámpara encendida que alumbraba; y vosotros estuvisteis dispuestos a alegraros por breve tiempo con su luz. 36 Pero yo tengo a mi favor un testimonio de mayor valor que el de Juan: las obras que el Padre me encargó llevar a feliz término, y que yo ahora realizo, son las que dan testimonio a mi favor de que el Padre me ha enviado.

37 También habla a mi favor el Padre que me envió, aunque vosotros nunca habéis oído su voz ni habéis visto su rostro. 38 No habéis acogido su palabra como lo prueba el hecho de que no habéis creído a su enviado. 39 Estudiáis las Escrituras pensando que contienen vida eterna; pues bien, precisamente las Escrituras dan testimonio a mi favor. 40 A pesar de ello, vosotros no queréis aceptarme para obtener esa vida.

41 Yo no busco honores humanos. 42 Además, os conozco muy bien y sé que no amáis a Dios. 43 Yo he venido de parte de mi Padre, pero vosotros no me aceptáis; en cambio, aceptaríais a cualquier otro que viniera en nombre propio. 44 ¿Cómo vais a creer, si sólo os preocupáis de recibir honores los unos de los otros y no os interesáis por el verdadero honor, que viene del Dios único? 45 Por lo demás, no penséis que voy a ser yo quien os acuse ante mi Padre; os acusará Moisés, el mismo Moisés en quien tenéis puesta vuestra esperanza. 46 Él escribió acerca de mí; por eso, si creyerais a Moisés, también me creeríais a mí. 47 Pero si no creéis lo que él escribió, ¿cómo vais a creer lo que yo digo?

Jézus meggyógyít egy beteget a Betesda tavánál

5 Ezek után egy ünnep következett, amelyre a júdeaiak fel szoktak menni Jeruzsálembe, és Jézus is felment. 2 Jeruzsálemben a Juh-kapunál van egy Betesda nevű vízgyűjtő medence, amelyet öt oszlopcsarnok vesz körül. 3 Itt nagyon sok beteg feküdt: vakok, sánták és bénák.[a] [4] [b] 5 Volt közöttük egy férfi, aki már harmincnyolc éve szenvedett valamilyen betegségben. 6 Jézus látta, hogy ott fekszik, és tudta, hogy milyen régóta beteg. Megkérdezte tőle: „Akarsz-e meggyógyulni?”

7 Az így felelt: „Uram, nincs senki, aki segítene rajtam, és bevinne a medencébe, amikor a víz felkavarodik. Mire odaérek, mindig valaki más lép be előttem.”

8 Ekkor Jézus ezt mondta: „Kelj fel, fogd a hordágyadat, és menj haza!” 9 A férfi azonnal meggyógyult, felkelt, fogta a hordágyát, és elment.

Mivel ez szombaton történt, 10 a zsidók rászóltak: „Szombat van, a Törvény szerint nem szabad terhet hordoznod!”

11 Ő ezt felelte: „Aki meggyógyított, az mondta, hogy fogjam a hordágyamat, és menjek haza.”

12 Azok megkérdezték: „Ki volt az az ember?”

13 De a meggyógyított férfi erre nem tudott válaszolni, mert közben Jézus eltűnt, mivel nagy tömeg volt azon a helyen.

14 Később a Templom területén Jézus találkozott ezzel a férfival, és azt mondta neki: „Látod, most visszakaptad az egészségedet, de vigyázz, hogy többé ne vétkezz, különben valami még rosszabb történhet veled!”

15 Ezután a férfi megmondta a vallási vezetőknek, hogy Jézus volt az, aki meggyógyította őt.

16 Ettől fogva a vallási vezetők üldözték, és meg akarták ölni Jézust, mivel szombaton gyógyította meg azt a beteget. 17 Jézus ezt mondta nekik: „Mindaddig, amíg Atyám dolgozik, én is dolgozom!” 18 Emiatt még inkább meg akarták ölni, mivel megszegte a szombatra vonatkozó törvényt, ráadásul Istent is apjának nevezte, s ezzel egyenlővé tette magát Istennel.

Jézus isteni hatalma

19 Jézus ekkor így válaszolt nekik: „Igazán mondom nektek: a Fiú semmit sem tehet a saját elhatározásából, csak azt, amit az Atyától lát, mert látja, hogy mit tesz az Atya, és ő is ugyanazt teszi. 20 Az Atya szereti a Fiút, ezért mindent megmutat neki, amit tesz. Sőt, még ezeknél nagyobb dolgokat is fog rábízni, s akkor fogtok majd igazán csodálkozni! 21 Az Atya feltámasztja a halottakat, és életet ad nekik. Ugyanígy a Fiú is életet ad azoknak, akiknek akar.

22 Az Atya senkit sem ítél, hanem az ítéletet egészen rábízta a Fiúra, 23 hogy mindenki úgy tisztelje a Fiút, mint az Atyát. Aki tehát nem tiszteli a Fiút, az nem tiszteli az Atyát sem, aki a Fiút elküldte.

24 Igazán mondom nektek: aki hallgat a szavamra, és hisz abban, aki elküldött engem, annak már örök élete van. Az ilyen ember nem kerül kárhoztató ítélet alá, mert már átment a halálból az örök életre. 25 Igazán mondom nektek, eljön az idő, sőt, már itt is van, amikor a halottak meghallják az Isten Fiának hangját, és akik hallgatnak a szavára, örökké élni fognak. 26 Mert ahogyan az élet forrása az Atyában van, ugyanúgy a Fiúnak is megadta, hogy benne is az élet forrása legyen. 27 Sőt, arra is felhatalmazást adott neki, hogy ítéletet tartson, mert ő az Emberfia. 28 Ne csodálkozzatok ezen, mert eljön az idő, amikor minden halott meghallja a sírokban a Fiú hangját, 29 és előjön. Akik életükben jót tettek, az örök életre támadnak fel, akik pedig gonosz dolgokat műveltek, azért támadnak fel, hogy ítéletre kerüljenek.”

Akik tanúskodnak Jézusról

30 „Önmagamban, az Atyától függetlenül semmit nem tehetek. Ahogyan az Atyától hallom, annak megfelelően ítélek és döntök. Nem a saját akaratom megvalósítására törekszem, hanem annak akaratát viszem véghez, aki elküldött engem, ezért igazságosak az ítéleteim.

31 Ha csak én tanúskodnék saját magamról, az nem lenne érvényes. 32 Valaki más az, aki tanúskodik rólam, és az ő tanúskodása kétség nélkül hiteles.

33 Ti megkérdeztétek Bemerítő Jánost, és ő hűségesen tanúskodott a valóságról. 34 Bár nem szorulok rá, hogy emberek tanúskodjanak mellettem, mégis emlékeztetlek titeket arra, amit ő mondott rólam, hogy üdvösségre jussatok. 35 János olyan volt, mint egy égő fáklya, amely megvilágítja az utat. Ti azonban csak ideig-óráig akartátok a világosságát élvezni.

36 Mellettem azonban erősebb bizonyítékok szólnak, mint János tanúskodása: a tetteim! A feladatok, amelyeket az Atya rám bízott, hogy elvégezzem, azok bizonyítják, hogy ő küldött engem. 37 Sőt, maga az Atya is tanúskodott rólam, aki engem elküldött! Ti azonban soha nem hallottátok a hangját, sem nem láttátok az arcát. 38 A szavai sem élnek bennetek, mert nem hisztek annak, akit hozzátok küldött, s aki által üzent nektek. 39 Buzgón tanulmányozzátok az Írásokat, mert azt hiszitek, hogy azok által kaptok örök életet. Jóllehet az Írások is rólam tanúskodnak, 40 mégsem akartok hozzám jönni, hogy örök életetek legyen!

41 Emberektől nem fogadok el dicsőséget vagy elismerést. 42 Jól ismerlek titeket, és tudom, hogy valójában nincs bennetek Isten iránti szeretet! 43 Bár engem Atyám küldött, hogy képviseljem őt, ti mégsem fogadtok be. Ha valaki más jön majd a saját hatalmával, azt el fogjátok fogadni! 44 Hogyan is tudnátok bennem hinni? Hiszen ti nem az egyetlen igaz Istentől, hanem egymástól akartok dicsőséget és elismerést kapni.

45 Ne gondoljátok, hogy én foglak vádolni benneteket az Atya előtt! Éppen az lesz a vádlótok, akiben reménykedtek: Mózes! Mert ha neki hittetek volna, 46 akkor bennem is hinnétek, hiszen énrólam írt. 47 De ha az ő írásainak nem hisztek, hogyan hihetnétek az én szavaimnak?”
