治愈池边的病人
5 这些事以后，犹太人的一个节日到了，耶稣就上耶路撒冷去。 2 在耶路撒冷的羊门附近有一个池子，希伯来语[a]叫做“贝示达[b]”，那里有五道柱廊。 3 柱廊里躺着一群患病的，有瞎眼的、瘸腿的、瘫痪的。他们正等着池水动起来， 4 因为主的天使按时下到池子里搅动池水。每次水动起来时，第一个下到池子里的人，无论患什么病都会痊愈。[c]
5 那里有一个人，病了三十八年。 6 耶稣见这个人躺在那里，知道他已经病了很久，就问他：“你想痊愈吗？”
7 那个病人回答：“先生，池水被搅动的时候，没有人把我放进池子里；而正当我要下去的时候，别人总比我先下去。”
8 耶稣对他说：“起来，拿起你的垫子走路吧！” 9 那个人立刻痊愈了，就拿起他的垫子开始走路。
那天是安息日， 10 所以那些犹太人对那得了痊愈的人说：“今天是安息日，你拿着垫子是不可以的！”
11 他就回答：“是那个使我痊愈的人对我说‘拿起你的垫子走路吧。’”
12 他们问：“对你说‘拿起[d]垫子走路’的那个人是谁？” 13 那得了痊愈的人并不知道他是谁，因为那里有一群人，而耶稣已经抽身离去了。
14 这些事以后，耶稣在圣殿里找到他，对他说：“看，你已经痊愈了。不要再犯罪，免得更严重的事临到你。” 15 那个人就去向那些犹太人报告说，使他痊愈的是耶稣。
父与子
16 那些犹太人之所以逼迫耶稣，[e]是因为他在安息日做这些事。 17 耶稣却对他们说：“直到如今，我父在做工，我也在做工。” 18 为此，那些犹太人更想要杀他，因为他不仅干犯了安息日，还称神是他的父，把自己当做与神同等的。
19 耶稣对他们说：“我确确实实地告诉你们：子凭着自己什么也不能做，只有看见父所做的，子才能做，因为父所做的事，子也同样地做。 20 原来，父喜爱子，把自己所做的一切都给他看，还要把比这些更大的事给他看，使你们感到惊奇。 21 因为父怎样使死人复活，赐他们生命，子也照样按自己的意愿赐人生命。 22 事实上，父并不审判任何人，而把一切审判的事都交给了子， 23 好使所有的人都尊重子，就像尊重父那样。不尊重子的，就是不尊重派他来的父。
生命与审判
24 “我确确实实地告诉你们：谁听我的话，又相信派我来的那一位，谁就有永恒的生命。他不但不被定罪，而且已经出死入生了。
25 “我确确实实地告诉你们：时候就要到了，现在就是了！当死人听见神儿子的声音时，听到的人就将活了。 26 原来，父怎样在自己里面有生命，也照样使子在自己里面有生命； 27 并且把审判的权柄交给了他，因为他是人子。 28 你们不要为此感到惊奇：时候就要到了！那时所有在坟墓里的人，都会听到他的声音， 29 并且要出来——行善的人复活得生命，作恶的人复活被定罪。
30 “我凭自己什么也不能做。我怎么听见，就怎么审判，而且我的审判是公义的，因为我不求自己的意思，而求那派我来者[f]的意思。
为子做见证
31 “如果我为自己做见证，我的见证就无效[g]。 32 为我做见证的另有一位，并且我知道，他为我做的见证是有效[h]的。 33 你们曾经派人到约翰那里，他为真理做了见证。 34 其实我所接受的见证不是从人来的。不过我说这些话，是为了要你们得救。 35 约翰是一盏燃烧发光的灯，你们情愿在他的光里快乐一时。
36 “我有比约翰更大的见证，因为父交给我工作要我去完成。我现在做的这些工作正为我见证：就是父差派了我。 37 派我来的父也亲自为我做了见证。你们从来没有听到他的声音，也没有看到他的相貌， 38 更没有把他的话语[i]存在你们里面，因为你们不信他所派来的那一位。 39 你们查考经文，因你们以为从中可以得到永恒的生命。其实这经文就是为我做见证的。 40 可是你们不肯到我这里来得生命。
41 “我不接受从人而来的荣耀。 42 不过我了解你们，你们里面没有属神的爱。 43 我奉我父的名来了，你们却不接受我；如果有别人奉自己的名而来，你们倒会接受他。 44 你们彼此接受荣耀，却不寻求从独一的神而来的荣耀，那怎么能信呢？ 45 不要以为我将要在父面前控告你们，有一位控告你们的，就是你们所仰赖的摩西。 46 事实上，如果你们信摩西，就会信我，因为他写了关于我的事； 47 如果你们不相信他所写的，又怎么会相信我的话呢？”

Jesus Heals a Man at a Pool
5 ·Later [L After these things] Jesus went [L up] to Jerusalem for a ·special feast [L feast/festival of the Jews]. 2 In Jerusalem there is a pool with five covered porches, which is called Bethesda[a] [C a pool of water north of the temple thought to have curative powers] in the Hebrew language [C referring to Aramaic, the native language of the Jews at the time]. This pool is near the Sheep Gate. 3 Many sick people were lying on the porches beside the pool. Some were blind, some were crippled, and some were paralyzed |, and they waited for the water to move. 4 ·Sometimes [At a certain time; From time to time] an angel of the Lord came down to the pool and stirred up the water. After the angel did this, the first person to go into the pool was healed from any sickness he had|[b]. 5 A man was lying there who had been ·sick [an invalid; disabled] for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw the man and knew that he had been ·sick [an invalid; disabled] for such a long time, Jesus asked him, “Do you want to be well?”
7 The ·sick man [invalid] answered [him], “Sir, there is no one to help me get into the pool when the water ·starts moving [is stirred up]. While I am coming to the water, someone else always ·gets in [goes down] before me.”
8 Then Jesus said to him, “·Stand up [T Rise]. Pick up your ·mat [bed; cot] and walk.” 9 And immediately the man ·was well [was healed; became whole]; he picked up his ·mat [bed; cot] and began to walk.
The day this happened was a Sabbath day. 10 So the ·Jews [or Jewish leaders] said to the man who had been healed, “Today is the Sabbath. It is ·against our law [L not lawful/permitted] for you to carry your ·mat [bed; cot] on the Sabbath day [C the fourth commandment prohibited work on the Sabbath, but not specifically this action (Ex. 20:8–11)].”
11 But he answered them, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your ·mat [bed; cot] and walk.’”
12 Then they asked him, “Who is the man who told you to pick up your ·mat [bed; cot] and walk?”
13 But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, because there were many people in that place, and Jesus had ·left [withdrawn; slipped away unnoticed].
14 Later, Jesus found the man at the Temple [area] and said to him, “See, you are well now. ·Stop sinning [T Sin no more] so that something worse does not happen to you.” [C Sometimes, not always, suffering can be explained by sin.]
15 Then the man left and told ·his people [the Jewish leaders; L the Jews] that Jesus was the one who had made him well.
16 Because Jesus was doing ·this [L these things] on the Sabbath day, ·some evil people [the Jewish leaders; L the Jews] began to ·persecute [harass] him. 17 But Jesus ·said to [L answered] them, “My Father ·never stops [is always; is still] working [C even on the Sabbath], and so I keep working, too.”
18 This made ·them [the Jewish leaders; L the Jews] try still harder to kill him. They said, “First Jesus was breaking the law about the Sabbath day. Now he says that God is his own Father, making himself equal with God!” [C Both breaking the Sabbath and blasphemy against God were punishable by death; Ex. 35:2; Lev. 24:16.]
Jesus Has God’s Authority
19 But Jesus ·said [answered them], “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], the Son can do nothing ·alone [on his own initiative; by himself]. The Son does only what he sees the Father doing, ·because the Son does whatever the Father does [L for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise]. 20 [L For] The Father loves the Son and shows the Son all the things he himself does. But the Father will show the Son even greater things than this so that you can all ·be amazed [marvel; be astonished]. 21 [L For] Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to those he ·wants to [wishes; wills]. 22 ·In fact, [or For] the Father judges no one, but he has ·given [entrusted to] the Son ·power to do all the judging [L all judgment; Rev. 20:11–15] 23 so that all people will honor the Son as much as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
24 “·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], whoever ·hears [obeys] ·what I say [L my word/message] and believes in the One who sent me has eternal life. That person will not ·be judged guilty [L come into judgment/condemnation] but has ·already left death and entered life [L passed from death into life]. 25 ·I tell you the truth [L Truly, truly I say to you], the ·time [L hour] is coming and is already here when the dead will ·hear [obey] the voice of the Son of God, and those who ·hear [obey] will ·have life [live]. 26 [L For] ·Life comes from the Father himself [just as the Father has life], ·and [so] he has ·allowed the Son to have [given the Son] life in himself as well. 27 And the Father has given the Son the ·approval [authority; power; right] to ·judge [execute judgment], because he is the Son of Man [C a title for the Messiah; Dan. 7:13–14]. 28 Don’t ·be surprised [marvel; be amazed] at this: A ·time [L hour] is coming when all who are dead and in their graves will hear his voice. 29 Then they will come out of their graves. Those who did good ·will rise and have life forever [L to the resurrection resulting in life], but those who did evil ·will rise to be judged guilty [L to the resurrection resulting in condemnation/judgment].
Jesus Is God’s Son
30 “I can do nothing ·alone [by myself; on my own initiative]. I judge ·only the way I am told [L as I hear], so my judgment is ·fair [just; right; righteous]. I don’t ·try to please myself [L seek my own will/desire], but ·I try to please [L the will of] the One who sent me.
31 “If only I ·tell people [testify; witness] about myself, ·what I say [my testimony; witness] is not ·true [valid]. 32 But there is another who ·tells [testifies; witnesses] about me, and I know that ·the things he says [L the witness/testimony he witnesses/testifies] about me are ·true [valid].
33 “You have sent people to John, and he has ·told you [testified/witnessed to] the truth. 34 It is not that I ·need [accept; depend on] ·what humans say [human testimony/witness]; I tell you this so you can be saved. 35 John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were ·happy to enjoy [L willing to rejoice in] his light for a while.
36 “But I have a ·proof [testimony; witness] about myself that is ·greater [weightier] than that of John. [L For] The ·things [L works] I do, which are the ·things [L works] my Father gave me to ·do [complete; finish; C the signs and miracles which point to his saving work on the cross], ·prove [testify; witness] that the Father sent me. 37 And the Father himself who sent me has given ·proof [testimony; witness] ·about me [concerning me; on my behalf]. You have never heard his voice or seen ·what he looks like [his form; his outward appearance]. 38 His ·teaching [word; message] does not ·live [remain; abide] in you, because you don’t believe in the One the Father sent. 39 You ·carefully study [search; examine] the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. They do in fact ·tell [testify; witness] ·about me [concerning me; on my behalf], 40 but you ·refuse [do not want] to come to me to have that life.
41 “I don’t ·need [or accept; receive] ·praise [glory; honor] from people. 42 But I know you—I know that you don’t have God’s love in you. 43 I have come ·from my Father and speak for him [L in my Father’s name], ·but [or and] you don’t ·accept [receive] me. But when another person comes, ·speaking only for himself [L in his own name], you will ·accept [receive] him. 44 You try to ·get praise [receive glory/honor] from each other, but you do not try to ·get the praise [receive glory/honor] that comes from the only God. So how can you believe? 45 Don’t think that I will ·stand before the Father and say you are wrong [L accuse you before the Father]. The one who ·says you are wrong [L accuses you] is Moses, the one ·you hoped would save you [L in whom you hoped]. 46 [L For] If you really believed Moses, you would believe me, because Moses wrote about me [C in the Torah, the first five books of the OT; for example, Deut. 18:15 quoted in Acts 3:22]. 47 But if you don’t believe what Moses wrote, how can you believe what I say?”

5 Après cela, il y eut une fête des Juifs, et Jésus monta à Jérusalem.
2 Or, à Jérusalem, près de la porte des brebis, il y a une piscine qui s'appelle en hébreu Béthesda, et qui a cinq portiques.
3 Sous ces portiques étaient couchés en grand nombre des malades, des aveugles, des boiteux, des paralytiques, qui attendaient le mouvement de l'eau;
4 car un ange descendait de temps en temps dans la piscine, et agitait l'eau; et celui qui y descendait le premier après que l'eau avait été agitée était guéri, quelle que fût sa maladie.
5 Là se trouvait un homme malade depuis trente-huit ans.
6 Jésus, l'ayant vu couché, et sachant qu'il était malade depuis longtemps, lui dit: Veux-tu être guéri?
7 Le malade lui répondit: Seigneur, je n'ai personne pour me jeter dans la piscine quand l'eau est agitée, et, pendant que j'y vais, un autre descend avant moi.
8 Lève-toi, lui dit Jésus, prends ton lit, et marche.
9 Aussitôt cet homme fut guéri; il prit son lit, et marcha.
10 C'était un jour de sabbat. Les Juifs dirent donc à celui qui avait été guéri: C'est le sabbat; il ne t'est pas permis d'emporter ton lit.
11 Il leur répondit: Celui qui m'a guéri m'a dit: Prends ton lit, et marche.
12 Ils lui demandèrent: Qui est l'homme qui t'a dit: Prends ton lit, et marche?
13 Mais celui qui avait été guéri ne savait pas qui c'était; car Jésus avait disparu de la foule qui était en ce lieu.
14 Depuis, Jésus le trouva dans le temple, et lui dit: Voici, tu as été guéri; ne pèche plus, de peur qu'il ne t'arrive quelque chose de pire.
15 Cet homme s'en alla, et annonça aux Juifs que c'était Jésus qui l'avait guéri.
16 C'est pourquoi les Juifs poursuivaient Jésus, parce qu'il faisait ces choses le jour du sabbat.
17 Mais Jésus leur répondit: Mon Père agit jusqu'à présent; moi aussi, j'agis.
18 A cause de cela, les Juifs cherchaient encore plus à le faire mourir, non seulement parce qu'il violait le sabbat, mais parce qu'il appelait Dieu son propre Père, se faisant lui-même égal à Dieu.
19 Jésus reprit donc la parole, et leur dit: En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, le Fils ne peut rien faire de lui-même, il ne fait que ce qu'il voit faire au Père; et tout ce que le Père fait, le Fils aussi le fait pareillement.
20 Car le Père aime le Fils, et lui montre tout ce qu'il fait; et il lui montrera des oeuvres plus grandes que celles-ci, afin que vous soyez dans l'étonnement.
21 Car, comme le Père ressuscite les morts et donne la vie, ainsi le Fils donne la vie à qui il veut.
22 Le Père ne juge personne, mais il a remis tout jugement au Fils,
23 afin que tous honorent le Fils comme ils honorent le Père. Celui qui n'honore pas le Fils n'honore pas le Père qui l'a envoyé.
24 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui écoute ma parole, et qui croit à celui qui m'a envoyé, a la vie éternelle et ne vient point en jugement, mais il est passé de la mort à la vie.
25 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, l'heure vient, et elle est déjà venue, où les morts entendront la voix du Fils de Dieu; et ceux qui l'auront entendue vivront.
26 Car, comme le Père a la vie en lui-même, ainsi il a donné au Fils d'avoir la vie en lui-même.
27 Et il lui a donné le pouvoir de juger, parce qu'il est Fils de l'homme.
28 Ne vous étonnez pas de cela; car l'heure vient où tous ceux qui sont dans les sépulcres entendront sa voix, et en sortiront.
29 Ceux qui auront fait le bien ressusciteront pour la vie, mais ceux qui auront fait le mal ressusciteront pour le jugement.
30 Je ne puis rien faire de moi-même: selon que j'entends, je juge; et mon jugement est juste, parce que je ne cherche pas ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé.
31 Si c'est moi qui rends témoignage de moi-même, mon témoignage n'est pas vrai.
32 Il y en a un autre qui rend témoignage de moi, et je sais que le témoignage qu'il rend de moi est vrai.
33 Vous avez envoyé vers Jean, et il a rendu témoignage à la vérité.
34 Pour moi ce n'est pas d'un homme que je reçois le témoignage; mais je dis ceci, afin que vous soyez sauvés.
35 Jean était la lampe qui brûle et qui luit, et vous avez voulu vous réjouir une heure à sa lumière.
36 Moi, j'ai un témoignage plus grand que celui de Jean; car les oeuvres que le Père m'a donné d'accomplir, ces oeuvres mêmes que je fais, témoignent de moi que c'est le Père qui m'a envoyé.
37 Et le Père qui m'a envoyé a rendu lui-même témoignage de moi. Vous n'avez jamais entendu sa voix, vous n'avez point vu sa face,
38 et sa parole ne demeure point en vous, parce que vous ne croyez pas à celui qu'il a envoyé.
39 Vous sondez les Écritures, parce que vous pensez avoir en elles la vie éternelle: ce sont elles qui rendent témoignage de moi.
40 Et vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour avoir la vie!
41 Je ne tire pas ma gloire des hommes.
42 Mais je sais que vous n'avez point en vous l'amour de Dieu.
43 Je suis venu au nom de mon Père, et vous ne me recevez pas; si un autre vient en son propre nom, vous le recevrez.
44 Comment pouvez-vous croire, vous qui tirez votre gloire les uns des autres, et qui ne cherchez point la gloire qui vient de Dieu seul?
45 Ne pensez pas que moi je vous accuserai devant le Père; celui qui vous accuse, c'est Moïse, en qui vous avez mis votre espérance.
46 Car si vous croyiez Moïse, vous me croiriez aussi, parce qu'il a écrit de moi.
47 Mais si vous ne croyez pas à ses écrits, comment croirez-vous à mes paroles?
