Living Bible
5 Afterwards Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish religious holidays. 2 Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, was Bethesda Pool, with five covered platforms or porches surrounding it. 3 Crowds of sick folks—lame, blind, or with paralyzed limbs—lay on the platforms (waiting for a certain movement of the water, 4 for an angel of the Lord came from time to time and disturbed the water, and the first person to step down into it afterwards was healed).[a]
5 One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him and knew how long he had been ill, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”
7 “I can’t,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to help me into the pool at the movement of the water. While I am trying to get there, someone else always gets in ahead of me.”
8 Jesus told him, “Stand up, roll up your sleeping mat and go on home!”
9 Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up the mat and began walking!
But it was on the Sabbath when this miracle was done. 10 So the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, “You can’t work on the Sabbath! It’s illegal to carry that sleeping mat!”
11 “The man who healed me told me to,” was his reply.
12 “Who said such a thing as that?” they demanded.
13 The man didn’t know, and Jesus had disappeared into the crowd. 14 But afterwards Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, “Now you are well; don’t sin as you did before,[b] or something even worse may happen to you.”
15 Then the man went to find the Jewish leaders and told them it was Jesus who had healed him.
16 So they began harassing Jesus as a Sabbath breaker.
17 But Jesus replied, “My Father constantly does good, and I’m following his example.”[c]
18 Then the Jewish leaders were all the more eager to kill him because in addition to disobeying their Sabbath laws, he had spoken of God as his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.
19 Jesus replied, “The Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing, and in the same way. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and tells him everything he is doing; and the Son will do far more awesome miracles than this man’s healing. 21 He will even raise from the dead anyone he wants to, just as the Father does. 22 And the Father leaves all judgment of sin to his Son, 23 so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. But if you refuse to honor God’s Son, whom he sent to you, then you are certainly not honoring the Father.
24 “I say emphatically that anyone who listens to my message and believes in God who sent me has eternal life, and will never be damned for his sins, but has already passed out of death into life.
25 “And I solemnly declare that the time is coming, in fact, it is here, when the dead shall hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God—and those who listen shall live. 26 The Father has life in himself, and has granted his Son to have life in himself, 27 and to judge the sins of all mankind because he is the Son of Man. 28 Don’t be so surprised! Indeed the time is coming when all the dead in their graves shall hear the voice of God’s Son, 29 and shall rise again—those who have done good, to eternal life; and those who have continued in evil, to judgment.
30 “But I pass no judgment without consulting the Father. I judge as I am told. And my judgment is absolutely fair and just, for it is according to the will of God who sent me and is not merely my own.
31 “When I make claims about myself they aren’t believed, 32-33 but someone else, yes, John the Baptist,[d] is making these claims for me too. You have gone out to listen to his preaching, and I can assure you that all he says about me is true! 34 But the truest witness I have is not from a man, though I have reminded you about John’s witness so that you will believe in me and be saved. 35 John shone brightly for a while, and you benefited and rejoiced, 36 but I have a greater witness than John. I refer to the miracles I do; these have been assigned me by the Father, and they prove that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father himself has also testified about me, though not appearing to you personally, or speaking to you directly. 38 But you are not listening to him, for you refuse to believe me—the one sent to you with God’s message.
39 “You search the Scriptures, for you believe they give you eternal life. And the Scriptures point to me! 40 Yet you won’t come to me so that I can give you this life eternal!
41-42 “Your approval or disapproval means nothing to me, for as I know so well, you don’t have God’s love within you. 43 I know, because I have come to you representing my Father and you refuse to welcome me, though you readily enough receive those who aren’t sent from him, but represent only themselves! 44 No wonder you can’t believe! For you gladly honor each other, but you don’t care about the honor that comes from the only God!
45 “Yet it is not I who will accuse you of this to the Father—Moses will! Moses, on whose laws you set your hopes of heaven. 46 For you have refused to believe Moses. He wrote about me, but you refuse to believe him, so you refuse to believe in me. 47 And since you don’t believe what he wrote, no wonder you don’t believe me either.”

5 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
41 I receive not honour from men.
42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.
47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath
5 After this there was a (A)feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by (B)the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic[a] called Bethesda,[b] which has five roofed colonnades. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and (C)paralyzed.[c] 5 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, (D)“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 (E)And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
(F)Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews[d] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and (G)it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for (H)Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! (I)Sin no more, (J)that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews (K)were persecuting Jesus, (L)because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
Jesus Is Equal with God
18 This was why the Jews (M)were seeking all the more to kill him, (N)because not only was he (O)breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God (P)his own Father, (Q)making himself equal with God.
The Authority of the Son
19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (R)the Son (S)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[e] does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For (T)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And (U)greater works than these will he show him, so that (V)you may marvel. 21 For as the Father (W)raises the dead and (X)gives them life, so (Y)also the Son gives life (Z)to whom he will. 22 (AA)For the Father judges no one, but (AB)has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they (AC)honor the Father. (AD)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AE)whoever hears my word and (AF)believes him who sent me has eternal life. Witnesses to Jesus

Honor the Father and the Son
16 For this reason the Jews (I)persecuted Jesus, [d]and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, (J)“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

Life and Judgment Are Through the Son

The Fourfold Witness
31 (AE)“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not [e]true. 32 (AF)There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. 33 You have sent to John, (AG)and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. 35 He was the burning and (AH)shining lamp, and (AI)you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36 But (AJ)I have a greater witness than John’s; for (AK)the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very (AL)works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, (AM)has testified of Me. Jesús sana a un paralítico
5 Después de esto, había una fiesta judía y Jesús fue a Jerusalén. 2 Allí había un estanque con cinco pabellones que quedaba cerca de la puerta de las ovejas. En arameo se llama Betzatá[a]. 3 Debajo de estos pabellones había muchos enfermos acostados. Unos eran ciegos, algunos cojos y otros paralíticos.[b] 4 [c] 5 Entre ellos estaba un hombre que había estado enfermo durante 38 años. 6 Cuando Jesús lo vio acostado ahí y supo que había estado enfermo tanto tiempo, le dijo:
—¿Te quieres sanar?
7 El enfermo respondió:
—Señor, no tengo a nadie que me meta al estanque cuando el agua se empieza a mover. Cuando estoy cerca del estanque, alguien se me adelanta y se mete antes que yo.
8 Jesús le dijo:
—Levántate, recoge tu camilla y camina.
9 El hombre quedó sano inmediatamente, tomó su camilla y empezó a caminar.
Esto fue en un día de descanso. 10 Por eso, algunos judíos empezaron a decirle al hombre que había sido sanado:
—Hoy es día de descanso, no se puede cargar una camilla.
11 Él les dijo:
—El que me sanó me dijo: “Recoge tu camilla y camina”.
12 Ellos le preguntaron:
—¿Quién fue el que te dijo: “Recoge tu camilla y camina”?
13 Pero el hombre que fue sanado no sabía quién era, porque Jesús había desaparecido entre la multitud.
14 Después, Jesús lo encontró en el área del templo y le dijo:
—Mira, estás sano. Así que no peques más o te pasará algo peor.
15 El hombre fue y les contó a esos judíos que Jesús lo había sanado.
16 Por eso ellos comenzaron a perseguir a Jesús, por hacer esto en día de descanso. 17 Pero Jesús les contestaba:
—Mi Padre nunca deja de trabajar, así que yo también trabajo.
18 Por esto, los judíos trataban con más ganas de matarlo. No les caía bien porque no cumplía con las reglas del día de descanso. Mucho menos les gustaba que Jesús llamara a Dios su Padre, haciéndose igual a Dios.
Jesús tiene la autoridad de Dios
19 Jesús les dijo: «Les digo la verdad: el Hijo no puede hacer nada por su cuenta. Sólo hace lo que ve hacer al Padre. El Hijo hace lo mismo que hace el Padre. 20 El Padre ama al Hijo y le muestra todo lo que hace; incluso, le mostrará hechos más grandes que estos y ustedes quedarán asombrados. 21 El Padre resucita a los muertos y les da vida, así también el Hijo da vida a los que quiere dársela. 22 El Padre no juzga a nadie, sino deja que su Hijo juzgue. 23 Decidió eso para que la gente respete al Hijo como respeta al Padre. El que no respeta al Hijo no respeta al Padre. Fue el Padre quien envió al Hijo.
24 »Les digo la verdad: si alguien oye mis palabras y cree en el que me envió, tiene vida eterna y no será juzgado, porque ya ha pasado de la muerte a la vida.
25 »Les digo la verdad: se acerca un momento importante, y en efecto ya ha llegado, cuando los que están muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios. Todos los que acepten lo que él dice, vivirán. 26 La vida viene del Padre mismo. De igual manera, ha permitido que el Hijo pueda dar vida. 27 El Padre también le ha dado autoridad al Hijo para juzgarlos, puesto que él es el Hijo del hombre. 28 No se sorprendan por esto, porque llegará también el momento en que los muertos que están en los sepulcros van a escuchar la voz del Hijo del hombre y 29 saldrán de sus sepulcros. Los que hicieron el bien se levantarán para vivir para siempre, pero los que hicieron el mal se levantarán para ser condenados.
30 »Yo no puedo hacer nada por mi cuenta, juzgo según lo que el Padre me dice y mi decisión es correcta. Es así porque no trato de hacer lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quiere el Padre que me envió.
Testimonios a favor de Jesús
31 »Si sólo yo testifico a mi favor, nadie está obligado a aceptarlo, 32 pero hay alguien más que testifica a mi favor, y sé que su testimonio acerca de mí es cierto.
33 »Ustedes enviaron mensajeros para escuchar a Juan y él les dio un testimonio verdadero, 34 pero yo no necesito que un hombre dé testimonio acerca de mí. Yo sólo les digo esto para que ustedes puedan ser salvos. 35 Juan fue como una lámpara encendida que iluminaba al pueblo, y ustedes se alegraron de disfrutar de su luz por un tiempo.
36 »Pero yo tengo un testimonio de más valor que el de Juan, las obras que yo hago son mi testimonio. El Padre me dio estas obras para hacer y ellas demuestran que él me envió. 37 Hasta el Padre que me envió ha testificado a mi favor. Ustedes nunca han oído su voz ni han visto cómo es él. 38 El mensaje de mi Padre no vive en ustedes porque no creen en quien él envió. 39 Ustedes estudian las Escrituras con mucho cuidado porque piensan que las Escrituras les darán vida eterna, pues esas mismas Escrituras son las que dan testimonio de mí. 40 Pero ustedes no quieren venir a mí para tener esa vida.
41 »No me interesa que ustedes me alaben. 42 Lo que me preocupa es saber que ustedes no aman realmente a Dios. 43 Vengo en nombre de mi Padre y ustedes no me aceptan, pero si viene alguien que hable por su propia cuenta, ¡a ese sí lo aceptan! 44 Les gusta alabarse unos a otros, pero no buscan la alabanza de Dios. Entonces, ¿cómo van a creer? 45 No piensen que yo soy el que los va a acusar delante del Padre, pues quien los acuse será Moisés, en el que ustedes tienen puesta su esperanza. 46 Si realmente le creyeran a Moisés también me creerían a mí. Moisés escribió sobre mí, 47 pero si ustedes no creen en lo que él escribió, ¿cómo van a creer en lo que yo digo?»
