³⁵ He was the burning and ^(A)shining lamp, and ^(B)you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.

^19 [a]And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a ^(A)light that shines in a dark place, ^(B)until ^(C)the day dawns and the morning star rises in your ^(D)hearts;

⁷ This man came for a ^(A)witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might ^(B)believe. ⁸ He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that ^(C)Light.

¹¹ “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

^5 (A)Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him ^6 (B)and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, ^(C)“Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from ^(D)the wrath to come?

^66 (A)From that time many of His disciples went ^[a]back and walked with Him no more.

²⁸ For I say to you, among those born of women there is ^[a]not a ^(A)greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

¹⁵ For he will be ^(A)great in the sight of the Lord, and ^(B)shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, ^(C)even from his mother’s womb. ¹⁶ And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. ^17 (D)He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
