The Authority of Jesus Questioned

²³ When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”^(A)

² For I can testify that they have a zeal for God, but it is not based on knowledge.^(A)

²⁹ So they said to one another, “Who has done this?” After searching and inquiring, they were told, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”

³⁸ Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people, and let us find out how this sin has arisen today.^(A)
