A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda

5 After ^(A)this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus ^(B)went up to Jerusalem. ²Now there is in Jerusalem ^(C)by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, ^[a]Bethesda, having five porches. ³In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, ^[b]paralyzed, ^[c]waiting for the moving of the water. ⁴For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. ⁵Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. ⁶When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”

⁷The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

⁸Jesus said to him, ^(D)“Rise, take up your bed and walk.” ⁹And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.

And ^(E)that day was the Sabbath. ¹⁰The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; ^(F)it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”

¹¹He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”

¹²Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” ¹³But the one who was ^(G)healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. ¹⁴Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. ^(H)Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”

¹⁵The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Honor the Father and the Son

¹⁶For this reason the Jews ^(I)persecuted Jesus, ^[d]and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. ¹⁷But Jesus answered them, ^(J)“My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”

¹⁸Therefore the Jews ^(K)sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, ^(L)making Himself equal with God. ¹⁹Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, ^(M)the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. ²⁰For ^(N)the Father loves the Son, and ^(O)shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. ²¹For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, ^(P)even so the Son gives life to whom He will. ²²For the Father judges no one, but ^(Q)has committed all judgment to the Son, ²³that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. ^(R)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Life and Judgment Are Through the Son

²⁴“Most assuredly, I say to you, ^(S)he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, ^(T)but has passed from death into life. ²⁵Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when ^(U)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. ²⁶For ^(V)as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have ^(W)life in Himself, ²⁷and ^(X)has given Him authority to execute judgment also, ^(Y)because He is the Son of Man. ²⁸Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will ^(Z)hear His voice ²⁹^(AA)and come forth—^(AB)those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. ³⁰^(AC)I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because ^(AD)I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

The Fourfold Witness

³¹^(AE)“If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not ^[e]true. ³²^(AF)There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. ³³You have sent to John, ^(AG)and he has borne witness to the truth. ³⁴Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. ³⁵He was the burning and ^(AH)shining lamp, and ^(AI)you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. ³⁶But ^(AJ)I have a greater witness than John’s; for ^(AK)the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very ^(AL)works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. ³⁷And the Father Himself, who sent Me, ^(AM)has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, ^(AN)nor seen His form. ³⁸But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. ³⁹^(AO)You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and ^(AP)these are they which testify of Me. ⁴⁰^(AQ)But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

⁴¹^(AR)“I do not receive honor from men. ⁴²But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. ⁴³I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. ⁴⁴^(AS)How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek ^(AT)the honor that comes from the only God? ⁴⁵Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; ^(AU)there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. ⁴⁶For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; ^(AV)for he wrote about Me. ⁴⁷But if you ^(AW)do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

The Peril of Adultery

5 My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
^[a]Lend your ear to my understanding,
²That you may ^[b]preserve discretion,
And your lips ^(A)may keep knowledge.
³^(B)For the lips of ^[c]an immoral woman drip honey,
And her mouth is ^(C)smoother than oil;
⁴But in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
Sharp as a two-edged sword.
⁵Her feet go down to death,
^(D)Her steps lay hold of ^[d]hell.
⁶Lest you ponder her path of life—
Her ways are unstable;
You do not know them.

⁷Therefore hear me now, my children,
And do not depart from the words of my mouth.
⁸Remove your way far from her,
And do not go near the door of her house,
⁹Lest you give your ^[e]honor to others,
And your years to the cruel one;
¹⁰Lest aliens be filled with your ^[f]wealth,
And your labors go to the house of a foreigner;
¹¹And you mourn at last,
When your flesh and your body are consumed,

“How I have hated instruction,

In the midst of the assembly and congregation.”

¹⁵Drink water from your own cistern,
And running water from your own well.
¹⁶Should your fountains be dispersed abroad,
^[g]Streams of water in the streets?
¹⁷Let them be only your own,
And not for strangers with you.
¹⁸Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice with ^(E)the wife of your youth.
¹⁹^(F)As a loving deer and a graceful doe,
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
And always be ^[h]enraptured with her love.
²⁰For why should you, my son, be enraptured by ^(G)an immoral woman,
And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?

²¹^(H)For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,
And He ^[i]ponders all his paths.

And he is caught in the cords of his sin.

Romans 5

Faith Triumphs in Trouble

5 Therefore, ^(A)having been justified by faith, ^[a]we have ^(B)peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, ²^(C)through whom also we have access by faith into this grace ^(D)in which we stand, and ^(E)rejoice in hope of the glory of God. ³And not only that, but ^(F)we also glory in tribulations, ^(G)knowing that tribulation produces ^[b]perseverance; ⁴^(H)and perseverance, ^[c]character; and character, hope. ⁵^(I)Now hope does not disappoint, ^(J)because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Christ in Our Place

⁶For when we were still without strength, ^[d]in due time ^(K)Christ died for the ungodly. ⁷For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. ⁸But ^(L)God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ⁹Much more then, having now been justified ^(M)by His blood, we shall be saved ^(N)from wrath through Him. ¹⁰For ^(O)if when we were enemies ^(P)we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved ^(Q)by His life. ¹¹And not only that, but we also ^(R)rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Death in Adam, Life in Christ^(S)

¹²Therefore, just as ^(T)through one man sin entered the world, and ^(U)death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— ¹³(For until the law sin was in the world, but ^(V)sin is not imputed when there is no law. ¹⁴Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, ^(W)who is a type of Him who was to come. ¹⁵But the free gift is not like the ^[e]offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded ^(X)to many. ¹⁶And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many ^[f]offenses resulted in justification. ¹⁷For if by the one man’s ^[g]offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)

¹⁸Therefore, as through ^[h]one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through ^(Y)one^[i] Man’s righteous act the free gift came ^(Z)to all men, resulting in justification of life. ¹⁹For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by ^(AA)one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

²⁰Moreover ^(AB)the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace ^(AC)abounded much more, ²¹so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Day of the Lord

5 But concerning ^(A)the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. ²For you yourselves know perfectly that ^(B)the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. ³For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then ^(C)sudden destruction comes upon them, ^(D)as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. ⁴^(E)But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. ⁵You are all ^(F)sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. ⁶^(G)Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but ^(H)let us watch and be ^[a]sober. ⁷For ^(I)those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk ^(J)are drunk at night. ⁸But let us who are of the day be sober, ^(K)putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. ⁹For ^(L)God did not appoint us to wrath, ^(M)but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, ¹⁰^(N)who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

Various Exhortations

¹²And we urge you, brethren, ^(O)to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and ^[d]admonish you, ¹³and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. ^(P)Be at peace among yourselves.

¹⁴Now we ^[e]exhort you, brethren, ^(Q)warn those who are ^[f]unruly, ^(R)comfort the fainthearted, ^(S)uphold the weak, ^(T)be patient with all. ¹⁵^(U)See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always ^(V)pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.

¹⁶^(W)Rejoice always, ¹⁷^(X)pray without ceasing, ¹⁸in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

¹⁹^(Y)Do not quench the Spirit. ²⁰^(Z)Do not despise prophecies. ²¹^(AA)Test all things; ^(AB)hold fast what is good. ²²Abstain from every form of evil.

Blessing and Admonition

²³Now may ^(AC)the God of peace Himself ^(AD)sanctify^[g] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body ^(AE)be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. ²⁴He who calls you is ^(AF)faithful, who also will ^(AG)do it.
