John 4:5-42
New American Standard Bible
5 So He *came to a city of (A)Samaria called Sychar, near (B)the parcel of land that (C)Jacob gave to his son Joseph; 6 and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, tired from His journey, was just sitting by the well. It was about [a]the sixth hour.
The Woman of Samaria
7 A woman of Samaria *came to draw water. Jesus *said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His (D)disciples had gone away to (E)the city to buy food. 9 So the (F)Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, though You are a Jew, are asking me for a drink, though I am a Samaritan woman?” (For (G)Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (H)living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “[b]Sir, You have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do You get this (I)living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who (J)gave us the well and drank of it himself, and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (K)shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to (L)eternal life.”
15 The woman *said to Him, “[c]Sir, (M)give me this water so that I will not be thirsty, nor come all the way here to draw water.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said to Him, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[d]Sir, I perceive that You are (N)a prophet. 20 (O)Our fathers worshiped on (P)this mountain, and yet you Jews say that (Q)in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Believe Me, woman, that [e](R)a time is coming when you will worship the Father (S)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 (T)You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, because (U)salvation is from the Jews. 23 But [f](V)a time is coming, and [g]even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (W)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be [h]His worshipers. 24 God is [i]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (X)in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (Y)Messiah is coming ((Z)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, “(AA)I am He, the One speaking to you.”
27 And at this point His (AB)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What are You seeking?” or, “Why are You speaking with her?” 28 So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man (AC)who told me all the things that I have done; (AD)this is not the [j]Christ, is He?” 30 They left the city and were coming to Him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “(AE)Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the (AF)disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to (AG)do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (AH)accomplish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I tell you, raise your eyes and observe the fields, that they are white (AI)for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving (AJ)wages and is gathering (AK)fruit for (AL)eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true: ‘(AM)One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have [k]come into their labor.”
The Samaritans
39 Now from (AN)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “(AO)He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to [l]Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One truly is (AP)the Savior of the world.”

5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that (A)Jacob (B)gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For (C)Jews have no dealings with (D)Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the (E)gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (F)living water.”
11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but (G)whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him (H)will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
15 (I)The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, (J)I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on (K)this mountain, and you Jews say that in (L)Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming (M)when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship (N)what you do not know; we know what we worship, for (O)salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will (P)worship the Father in (Q)spirit (R)and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 (S)God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah (T)is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, (U)He will tell us all things.”
26 Jesus said to her, (V)“I who speak to you am He.”
The Whitened Harvest
27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”
28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man (W)who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him.
31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”
34 Jesus said to them, (X)“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (Y)finish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes (Z)the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, (AA)for they are already white for harvest! 36 (AB)And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that (AC)both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true: (AD)‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; (AE)others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”
The Savior of the World
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him (AF)because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own (AG)word.
42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for (AH)we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed [a]the Christ, the Savior of the world.”
