Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

4 When Jesus^[a] knew that the Pharisees^(A) heard He was making^(B) and baptizing more disciples than John^(C) ²(though Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were), ³He left Judea^(D) and went again to Galilee.^(E) ⁴He had to travel through Samaria,^(F) ⁵so He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property^[b] that Jacob^(G) had given his son Joseph.^(H) ⁶Jacob’s well^(I) was there, and Jesus, worn out from His journey, sat down at the well. It was about six in the evening.^[c]

⁷A woman of Samaria came to draw water.^(J)

“Give Me a drink,” Jesus said to her, ⁸for His disciples had gone into town to buy food.

⁹“How is it that You, a Jew,^(K) ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan^(L) woman?” she asked Him. For Jews do not associate with^[d] Samaritans.^[e]

¹⁰Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God,^(M) and who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would ask Him, and He would give you living water.”^(N)

¹¹“Sir,”^(O) said the woman, “You don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do You get this ‘living water’? ¹²You aren’t greater than our father Jacob,^(P) are You? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.”

¹³Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. ¹⁴But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again—ever!^(Q) In fact, the water I will give him will become a well^[f]^(R) of water springing up within him for eternal life.”^(S)

¹⁵“Sir,” the woman said to Him, “give me this water so I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”

¹⁶“Go call your husband,” He told her, “and come back here.”

¹⁷“I don’t have a husband,” she answered.

“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said. ¹⁸“For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”

¹⁹“Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that You are a prophet. ²⁰Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,^[g]^(T) yet you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”^(U)

²¹Jesus told her, “Believe Me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. ²²You Samaritans^[h] worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.^(V) ²³But an hour is coming, and is now here,^(W) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship Him. ²⁴God is spirit,^(X) and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”^(Y)

²⁵The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah^[i]^(Z) is coming” (who is called Christ^(AA)). “When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”

²⁶“I am He,”^(AB) Jesus told her, “the One speaking to you.”

The Ripened Harvest

²⁷Just then His disciples arrived, and they were amazed that He was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, “What do You want?” or “Why are You talking with her?”

²⁸Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the men, ²⁹“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the Messiah?”^(AC) ³⁰They left the town and made their way to Him.^(AD)

³¹In the meantime the disciples kept urging Him, “Rabbi,^(AE) eat something.”

³²But He said, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”

³³The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought Him something to eat?”

³⁴“My food is to do the will of Him^(AF) who sent Me^(AG) and to finish His work,”^(AH) Jesus told them. ³⁵“Don’t you say, ‘There are still four more months, then comes the harvest’? Listen to what I’m telling you: Open^[j] your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ready^[k] for harvest. ³⁶The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life,^(AI) so the sower and reaper can rejoice together. ³⁷For in this case the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’^(AJ) ³⁸I sent you to reap what you didn’t labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from^[l] their labor.”

The Savior of the World

³⁹Now many Samaritans^(AK) from that town believed in Him because of what the woman said^[m] when she testified,^(AL) “He told me everything I ever did.” ⁴⁰Therefore, when the Samaritans came to Him,^(AM) they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed there two days. ⁴¹Many more believed because of what He said.^[n] ⁴²And they told the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior^(AN) of the world.”^[o]

A Galilean Welcome

⁴³After two days He left there for Galilee.^(AO) ⁴⁴Jesus Himself testified^(AP) that a prophet has no honor in his own country.^(AQ) ⁴⁵When^(AR) they entered Galilee, the Galileans^(AS) welcomed Him because they had seen everything He did in Jerusalem^(AT) during the festival.^(AU) For they also had gone to the festival.

The Second Sign: Healing an Official’s Son

⁴⁶Then He went again to Cana^(AV) of Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.^(AW) ⁴⁷When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea^(AX) into Galilee, he went to Him and pleaded with Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

⁴⁸Jesus told him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders,^(AY) you will not believe.”^(AZ)

⁴⁹“Sir,”^(BA) the official said to Him, “come down before my boy dies!”

⁵⁰“Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man believed what^[p] Jesus said to him and departed.

⁵¹While he was still going down, his slaves met him saying that his boy was alive. ⁵²He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at seven in the morning^[q] the fever left him,” they answered. ⁵³The father^(BB) realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” Then he himself believed, along with his whole household.

⁵⁴This, therefore, was the second sign^(BC) Jesus performed after He came from Judea to Galilee.^(BD)

4 وَعَلِمَ يَسُوعُ أنَّ الفِرِّيسِيِّينَ سَمِعُوا أنَّهُ كَانَ يُتَلْمِذُ وَيُعَمِّدُ أشْخَاصًا أكْثَرَ مِنْ يُوحَنَّا، ²مَعَ أنَّ يَسُوعَ نَفْسَهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يُعَمِّدُ، بَلْ تَلَامِيذُهُ. ³فَغَادَرَ يَسُوعُ إقْلِيمَ اليَهُودِيَّةِ وَعَادَ ثَانِيَةً إلَى إقْلِيمِ الجَلِيلِ. ⁴وَكَانَ مِنَ الضَّرُورِيِّ أنْ يَمُرَّ عَبْرَ إقْلِيمِ السَّامِرَةِ.

⁵فَوَصَلَ إلَى بَلْدَةٍ سَامِرِيَّةٍ تُدْعَى سُوخَارَ. وَهِيَ قُرْبَ الأرْضِ الَّتِي أعْطَاهَا يَعْقُوبُ لَابْنِهِ يُوسُفَ. ⁶وَكَانَتْ بِئْرُ يَعْقُوبَ هُنَاكَ. فَجَلَسَ يَسُوعُ عِنْدَ البِئْرِ لِأنَّهُ كَانَ مُتْعَبًا مِنَ المَسِيرِ. وَكَانَ الوَقْتُ نَحْوَ الثَّانِيَةِ عَشْرَةَ ظُهْرًا.

⁷فَجَاءَتِ امْرأةٌ سَامِرِيَّةٌ لِتَأْخُذَ مَاءً مِنَ البِئْرِ. فَقَالَ لَهَا يَسُوعُ: «أعْطِينِي لِأشْرَبَ.» ⁸وَكَانَ التَّلَامِيذُ قَدْ ذَهَبُوا إلَى المَدِينَةِ لِيَشْتَرُوا طَعَامًا.

⁹فَقَالَتْ لَهُ المَرْأةُ السَّامِرِيَّةُ: «أنْتَ يَهُودِيٌّ، وَأنَا امْرأةٌ سَامِرِيَّةٌ. فَكَيْفَ تَطْلُبُ مِنِّي أنْ أُعْطِيَكَ لِتَشْرَبَ؟» قَالَتِ المَرْأةُ هَذَا لِأنَّ اليَهُودَ يَرْفُضُونَ أنْ يَخْتَلِطُوا بِالسَّامِرِيِّينَ.^[a] ¹⁰فَأجَابَهَا يَسُوعُ: «أنْتِ لَا تَعْرِفِينَ مَا يُعْطِيهِ اللهُ، وَلَا تَعْرِفِينَ مَنِ الَّذِي يَقُولُ لَكِ: أعْطِينِي لِأشْرَبَ. فَلَو عَرَفتِ، لَطَلَبتِ أنْتِ مِنْهُ، وَلأعطَاكِ مَاءً مُحْييًا.»

¹¹فَقَالَت لَهُ المَرْأةُ: «لَيْسَ لَديكَ دَلوٌ يَا سَيِّدُ، وَالبِئرُ عَمِيقَةٌ. فَكَيْفَ سَتَحْصُلُ عَلَى مِثْلِ ذَلِكَ المَاءِ؟ لَا أظُنُّكَ أعْظَمَ مِنْ أبِينَا يَعْقُوبَ! ¹²فَهُوَ الَّذِي أعطَانَا هَذِهِ البِئْرَ، وَقَدْ شَرِبَ مِنْهَا هُوَ وَأبْنَاؤُهُ وَمَوَاشِيهِ.»

¹³فَأجَابَهَا يَسُوعُ: «كُلُّ مَنْ يَشْرَبُ مِنْ هَذَا المَاءِ سَيَعْطَشُ ثَانِيَةً، ¹⁴أمَّا مَنْ يَشْرَبُ مِنَ المَاءِ الَّذِي أُعْطِيهِ إيَّاهُ أنَا، فَلَنْ يَعْطَشَ أبَدًا، بَلْ يَصِيرُ المَاءُ الَّذِي أُعْطِيهِ نَبْعًا فِي دَاخِلِهِ، وَيَتَدَفَّقُ مُعطِيًا حَيَاةً أبَدِيَّةً.»

¹⁵فَقَالَتْ لَهُ المَرْأةُ: «أعْطِنِي هَذَا المَاءَ يَا سَيِّدُ، فَلَا أعطَشُ أبَدًا وَلَا أعُودُ إلَى هُنَا طَلَبًا لِلمَاءِ.»

¹⁶فَقَالَ لَهَا يَسُوعُ: «اذْهَبِي وَنَادِي زَوْجَكِ وَتَعَالَا إلَى هُنَا.» ¹⁷فَقَالَتِ المَرْأةُ: «لَا زَوْجَ لِي!» فَقَالَ لَهَا يَسُوعُ: «أصَبْتِ بِقَولِكِ: ‹لَا زَوْجَ لِي.› ¹⁸فَقَدْ كَانَ لَكِ خَمْسَةُ أزوَاجٍ، أمَّا الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي تَعِيشِينَ مَعَهُ الآنَ، فَلَيْسَ زَوْجَكِ! فَقَدْ صَدَقْتِ.»

¹⁹قَالَتِ المَرْأةُ: «يَا سَيِّدُ، لَا بُدَّ أنَّكَ نَبِيٌّ! ²⁰لَقَدْ عَبَدَ آبَاؤُنَا السَّامِرِيُّونَ اللهَ عَلَى هَذَا الجَبَلِ،^[b] أمَّا أنْتُمُ اليَهُودَ فَتَقُولُونَ إنَّهُ يَنْبَغِي لِلنَّاسِ أنْ يَعْبُدُوا اللهَ فِي مَدِينَةِ القُدْسِ!»

²¹فَقَالَ لَهَا يَسُوعُ: «يَا امْرأةُ، صَدِّقِينِي أنَّهُ سَيَأْتِي الوَقْتُ حِينَ سَتَعْبُدُونَ الآبَ لَا عَلَى هَذَا الجَبَلِ وَلَا فِي مَدِينَةِ القُدْسِ. ²²أنْتُمُ السَّامِرِيِّينَ تَعْبُدُونَ مَا لَا تَعْرِفُونَ، أمَّا نَحْنُ اليَهُودَ فَنَعْرِفُ مَا نَعْبُدُ، لِأنَّ الخَلَاصَ يَأتِي مِنَ اليَهُودِ.^[c] ²³وَلَكِنْ سَيَأْتِي وَقْتٌ، بَلْ أتَى الآنَ، حِينَ يَعْبُدُ العَابِدُونَ الحَقِيقِيُّونَ الآبَ عِبَادَةً رُوحِيَّةً وَحَقِيقِيَّةً. فَهَكَذَا يُرِيدُ الآبُ أنْ يَكُونَ عَابِدُوهُ. ²⁴اللهُ رُوحٌ، وَالَّذِينَ يَعْبُدُونَهُ يَنْبَغِي أنْ يَعْبُدُوهُ بِالرُّوحِ وَالحَقِّ.»

²⁵فَقَالَتْ: «أنَا أعْرِفُ أنَّ مَشِيحَا^[d] – أيِ المَسِيحَ – سَيَأْتِي. وَحِينَ يَأتِي سَيُخبِرُنَا بِكُلِّ شَيءٍ.»

²⁶قَالَ يَسُوعُ: «أنَا هُوَ الَّذِي أُكَلِّمُكِ.»

²⁷وَفِي تِلْكَ اللَّحْظَةِ وَصَلَ تَلَامِيذُهُ، وَدُهِشُوا جِدًّا لِأنَّهُ كَانَ يَتَكَلَّمُ مَعَ امْرأةٍ. لَكِنْ لَمْ يَسْألْهُ أحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ: «مَا الَّذِي تُرِيدُهُ مِنْهَا؟» أوْ «لِمَاذَا تُكَلِّمُهَا؟»

²⁸أمَّا المَرْأةُ فَقَدْ تَرَكَتْ جَرَّتَهَا، وَعَادَتْ إلَى البَلْدَةِ وَقَالَتْ لِلنَّاسِ: ²⁹«تَعَالَوْا لِتَرَوْا إنْسَانًا أخبَرَنِي بِكُلِّ مَا فَعَلْتُ فِي حَيَاتِي! أيُمْكِنُ أنْ يَكُونَ هُوَ المَسِيحَ؟» ³⁰فَتَرَكُوا بَلْدَتَهُمْ وَذَهَبُوا إلَيْهِ.

³¹وَفِي ذَلِكَ الوَقْتِ، كَانَ تَلَامِيذُهُ يَحُثُّونَهُ وَيَقُولُونَ: «يَا مُعَلِّمُ، كُلْ شَيْئًا!»

³²لَكِنَّهُ قَالَ لَهُمْ: «عِندِي طَعَامٌ لِآكُلَهُ لَا تَعْرِفُونَ عَنْهُ شَيْئًا.»

³³فَأخَذَ تَلَامِيذُهُ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُمْ: «أيُمْكِنُ أنْ يَكُونَ أحَدٌ قَدْ أحْضَرَ إلَيْهِ طَعَامًا؟»

³⁴فَقَالَ لَهُمْ يَسُوعُ: «طَعَامِي هُوَ تَنْفِيذُ إرَادَةِ ذَاكَ الَّذِي أرْسَلَنِي، وَإتمَامُ العَمَلِ الَّذِي كَلَّفَنِي بِعَمَلِهِ. ³⁵أنْتُمْ تَقُولُونَ حِينَ تَزْرَعُونَ: ‹سَيَأْتِي الحَصَادُ بَعْدَ أرْبَعَةِ أشْهُرٍ.› وَأنَا أقُولُ لَكُمْ: افْتَحُوا عُيُونَكُمْ وَانظُرُوا إلَى الحُقُولِ. إنَّهَا الآنَ نَاضِجَةٌ لِلحَصَادِ. ³⁶وَالحَاصِدُ يَأْخُذُ أَجْرَهُ وَيَجْمَعُ مَحصُولًا لِلحَيَاةِ الأبَدِيَّةِ. وَهَكَذَا يَفْرَحُ الزَّارِعُ وَالحَاصِدُ مَعًا. ³⁷وَيَصْدُقُ المَثَلُ القَائِلُ: ‹وَاحِدٌ يَزْرَعُ وَآخَرُ يَحْصُدُ.› ³⁸وَأنَا أرسَلْتُكُمْ لِتَحْصُدُوا مَحصُولًا لَمْ تَتْعَبُوا فِيهِ. فَقَدْ تَعِبَ فِيهِ آخَرُونَ، وَانتَفَعْتُمْ أنْتُمْ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ.»

³⁹فَآمَنَ بِهِ سَامِرِيُّونَ كَثِيرُونَ مِنْ تِلْكَ البَلْدَةِ بِسَبَبِ مَا قَالَتْهُ المَرْأةُ فِي شَهَادَتِهَا: «أخبَرَنِي بِكُلِّ مَا فَعَلْتُ فِي حَيَاتِي!» ⁴⁰وَعِنْدَمَا جَاءَ إلَيْهِ السَّامِرِيُّونَ، طَلَبُوا إليهِ أنْ يَبْقَى مَعَهُمْ، فَأقَامَ هُنَاكَ يَوْمَينِ. ⁴¹فَتَكَاثَرَ جِدًّا عَدَدُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِهِ بِسَبَبِ كَلَامِهِ.

⁴²وَقَالُوا لِلمَرْأةِ: «لَمْ نَعُدْ نُؤْمِنُ بِنَاءً عَلَى كَلَامِكِ، لِأنَّنَا سَمِعْنَاهُ بِأنفُسِنَا. وَنَحْنُ نَعْلَمُ الآنَ أنَّ هَذَا الإنْسَانَ هُوَ حَقًّا مُخَلِّصُ العَالَمِ.»

يَسُوعُ يَشْفِي ابْنَ أحَدِ رِجَالِ المَلِك

⁴³وَلَمَّا انقَضَى اليَوْمَانِ، غَادَرَ يَسُوعُ إقْلِيمَ السَّامِرَةِ وَذَهَبَ إلَى إقْلِيمِ الجَلِيلِ. ⁴⁴وَكَانَ يَسُوعُ نَفْسُهُ قَدْ أقَرَّ بِأنَّهُ لَا كَرَامَةَ لِنَبِيٍّ فِي وَطَنِهِ. ⁴⁵لَكِنَّ أهْلَ الجَلِيلِ كَانُوا قَدْ ذَهَبُوا إلَى مَدِينَةِ القُدْسِ وَرَأوْا كُلَّ مَا فَعَلَهُ يَسُوعُ فِي عِيدِ الفِصْحِ. لِذَلِكَ فَقَدْ رَحَّبُوا بِهِ عِنْدَمَا جَاءَ إلَى الجَلِيلِ.

⁴⁶وَمَرَّةً أُخْرَى ذَهَبَ يَسُوعُ إلَى بَلْدَةِ قَانَا فِي الجَلِيلِ حَيْثُ كَانَ قَدْ حَوَّلَ المَاءَ إلَى نَبِيذٍ.

وَكَانَ فِي مَدِينَةِ كَفْرِنَاحُومَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ حَاشِيَةِ المَلِكِ، وَكَانَ ابْنُهُ مَرِيضًا. ⁴⁷فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ أنَّ يَسُوعَ قَدْ أتَى إلَى الجَلِيلِ مِنَ اليَهُودِيَّةِ، جَاءَ إلَيْهِ يَرْجُوهُ أنْ يَذْهَبَ إلَى كَفْرِنَاحُومَ وَيَشْفِي ابْنَهُ الَّذِي أوشَكَ أنْ يَمُوتَ. ⁴⁸فَقَالَ لَهُ يَسُوعُ: «أنْتُمْ لَا تُؤْمِنُونَ مَا لَمْ تَرَوْا بُرْهَانَ المُعجِزَاتِ وَالعَجَائِبِ!»

⁴⁹فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ لِيَسُوعَ: «أرْجُوكَ تَعَالَ يَا سَيِّدُ قَبْلَ أنْ يَمُوتَ وَلَدِي!»

⁵⁰فَقَالَ لَهُ يَسُوعُ: «اذْهَبْ إلَى بَيْتِكَ. ابْنُكَ سَيَعِيشُ.» فَآمَنَ الرَّجُلُ بِمَا قَالَهُ لَهُ يَسُوعُ وَذَهَبَ. ⁵¹وَبَيْنَمَا كَانَ عَائِدًا إلَى بَيْتِهِ، لَاقَاهُ خُدَّامُهُ وَقَالُوا لَهُ إنَّ ابْنَهُ مُعَافَى. ⁵²فَاسْتَفْسَرَ مِنْهُمْ عَنِ الوَقْتِ الَّذِي بَدَأ فِيهِ ابْنُهُ يَتَعَافَى، فَقَالُوا: «زَالَتْ حَرَارَتُهُ فِي السَّاعَةِ الوَاحِدَةِ مِنْ بَعْدِ ظُهْرِ الأمْسِ.» ⁵³فَأدرَكَ أبُو الطِّفلِ أنَّ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الوَقْتُ نَفْسُهُ الَّذِي قَالَ لَهُ فِيهِ يَسُوعَ: «ابْنُكَ سَيَعِيشُ.» فَآمَنَ هُوَ وَعَائِلَتُهُ كُلُّهَا.

⁵⁴كَانَتْ هَذِهِ المُعجِزَةَ الثَّانِيَةَ الَّتِي صَنَعَهَا يَسُوعُ بَعْدَ مَجِيئِهِ مِنَ اليَهُودِيَّةِ إلَى الجَلِيلِ.

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

4 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John^(A)— ²although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. ³So he left Judea^(B) and went back once more to Galilee.

⁴Now he had to go through Samaria.^(C) ⁵So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.^(D) ⁶Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

⁷When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”^(E) ⁸(His disciples had gone into the town^(F) to buy food.)

⁹The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan^(G) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.^[a])

¹⁰Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”^(H)

¹¹“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? ¹²Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well^(I) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

¹³Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.^(J) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water^(K) welling up to eternal life.”^(L)

¹⁵The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty^(M) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

¹⁶He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

¹⁷“I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. ¹⁸The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

¹⁹“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.^(N) ²⁰Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,^(O) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”^(P)

²¹“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming^(Q) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.^(R) ²²You Samaritans worship what you do not know;^(S) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.^(T) ²³Yet a time is coming and has now come^(U) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit^(V) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. ²⁴God is spirit,^(W) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

²⁵The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)^(X) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

²⁶Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”^(Y)

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

²⁷Just then his disciples returned^(Z) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

²⁸Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, ²⁹“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.^(AA) Could this be the Messiah?”^(AB) ³⁰They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

³¹Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,^(AC) eat something.”

³²But he said to them, “I have food to eat^(AD) that you know nothing about.”

³³Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”

³⁴“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will^(AE) of him who sent me and to finish his work.^(AF) ³⁵Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.^(AG) ³⁶Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests^(AH) a crop for eternal life,^(AI) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. ³⁷Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’^(AJ) is true. ³⁸I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

Many Samaritans Believe

³⁹Many of the Samaritans from that town^(AK) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”^(AL) ⁴⁰So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. ⁴¹And because of his words many more became believers.

⁴²They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”^(AM)

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

⁴³After the two days^(AN) he left for Galilee. ⁴⁴(Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)^(AO) ⁴⁵When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,^(AP) for they also had been there.

⁴⁶Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.^(AQ) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. ⁴⁷When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,^(AR) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

⁴⁸“Unless you people see signs and wonders,”^(AS) Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”

⁴⁹The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

⁵⁰“Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”

The man took Jesus at his word and departed. ⁵¹While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. ⁵²When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”

⁵³Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household^(AT) believed.

⁵⁴This was the second sign^(AU) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
