John 4
Holman Christian Standard Bible
Jesus and the Samaritan Woman
4Â When Jesus[a] knew that the Pharisees(A) heard He was making(B) and baptizing more disciples than John(C) 2Â (though Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were), 3Â He left Judea(D) and went again to Galilee.(E) 4Â He had to travel through Samaria,(F) 5Â so He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property[b] that Jacob(G) had given his son Joseph.(H) 6Â Jacobâs well(I) was there, and Jesus, worn out from His journey, sat down at the well. It was about six in the evening.[c]
7Â A woman of Samaria came to draw water.(J)
âGive Me a drink,â Jesus said to her, 8Â for His disciples had gone into town to buy food.
9Â âHow is it that You, a Jew,(K) ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan(L) woman?â she asked Him. For Jews do not associate with[d] Samaritans.[e]
10Â Jesus answered, âIf you knew the gift of God,(M) and who is saying to you, âGive Me a drink,â you would ask Him, and He would give you living water.â(N)
11Â âSir,â(O) said the woman, âYou donât even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do You get this âliving waterâ? 12Â You arenât greater than our father Jacob,(P) are You? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.â
13Â Jesus said, âEveryone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14Â But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty againâever!(Q) In fact, the water I will give him will become a well[f](R) of water springing up within him for eternal life.â(S)
15Â âSir,â the woman said to Him, âgive me this water so I wonât get thirsty and come here to draw water.â
16Â âGo call your husband,â He told her, âand come back here.â
17Â âI donât have a husband,â she answered.
âYou have correctly said, âI donât have a husband,ââ Jesus said. 18Â âFor youâve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.â
19Â âSir,â the woman replied, âI see that You are a prophet. 20Â Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,[g](T) yet you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.â(U)
21Â Jesus told her, âBelieve Me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22Â You Samaritans[h] worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.(V) 23Â But an hour is coming, and is now here,(W) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship Him. 24Â God is spirit,(X) and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.â(Y)
25Â The woman said to Him, âI know that Messiah[i](Z) is comingâ (who is called Christ(AA)). âWhen He comes, He will explain everything to us.â
26Â âI am He,â(AB) Jesus told her, âthe One speaking to you.â
The Ripened Harvest
27Â Just then His disciples arrived, and they were amazed that He was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, âWhat do You want?â or âWhy are You talking with her?â
28Â Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the men, 29Â âCome, see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the Messiah?â(AC) 30Â They left the town and made their way to Him.(AD)
31Â In the meantime the disciples kept urging Him, âRabbi,(AE) eat something.â
32Â But He said, âI have food to eat that you donât know about.â
33Â The disciples said to one another, âCould someone have brought Him something to eat?â
34Â âMy food is to do the will of Him(AF) who sent Me(AG) and to finish His work,â(AH) Jesus told them. 35Â âDonât you say, âThere are still four more months, then comes the harvestâ? Listen to what Iâm telling you: Open[j] your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ready[k] for harvest. 36Â The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life,(AI) so the sower and reaper can rejoice together. 37Â For in this case the saying is true: âOne sows and another reaps.â(AJ) 38Â I sent you to reap what you didnât labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from[l] their labor.â
The Savior of the World
39Â Now many Samaritans(AK) from that town believed in Him because of what the woman said[m] when she testified,(AL) âHe told me everything I ever did.â 40Â Therefore, when the Samaritans came to Him,(AM) they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed there two days. 41Â Many more believed because of what He said.[n] 42Â And they told the woman, âWe no longer believe because of what you said, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior(AN) of the world.â[o]
A Galilean Welcome
43Â After two days He left there for Galilee.(AO) 44Â Jesus Himself testified(AP) that a prophet has no honor in his own country.(AQ) 45Â When(AR) they entered Galilee, the Galileans(AS) welcomed Him because they had seen everything He did in Jerusalem(AT) during the festival.(AU) For they also had gone to the festival.
The Second Sign: Healing an Officialâs Son
46Â Then He went again to Cana(AV) of Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.(AW) 47Â When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea(AX) into Galilee, he went to Him and pleaded with Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.
48Â Jesus told him, âUnless you people see signs and wonders,(AY) you will not believe.â(AZ)
49Â âSir,â(BA) the official said to Him, âcome down before my boy dies!â
50Â âGo,â Jesus told him, âyour son will live.â The man believed what[p] Jesus said to him and departed.
51Â While he was still going down, his slaves met him saying that his boy was alive. 52Â He asked them at what time he got better. âYesterday at seven in the morning[q] the fever left him,â they answered. 53Â The father(BB) realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, âYour son will live.â Then he himself believed, along with his whole household.
54Â This, therefore, was the second sign(BC) Jesus performed after He came from Judea to Galilee.(BD)

John 4
New International Version
Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman
4Â Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John(A)â 2Â although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3Â So he left Judea(B) and went back once more to Galilee.
4Â Now he had to go through Samaria.(C) 5Â So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(D) 6Â Jacobâs well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7Â When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, âWill you give me a drink?â(E) 8Â (His disciples had gone into the town(F) to buy food.)
9Â The Samaritan woman said to him, âYou are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(G) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?â (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])
10Â Jesus answered her, âIf you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.â(H)
11Â âSir,â the woman said, âyou have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12Â Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(I) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?â
13Â Jesus answered, âEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14Â but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(J) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(K) welling up to eternal life.â(L)
15Â The woman said to him, âSir, give me this water so that I wonât get thirsty(M) and have to keep coming here to draw water.â
16Â He told her, âGo, call your husband and come back.â
17Â âI have no husband,â she replied.
Jesus said to her, âYou are right when you say you have no husband. 18Â The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.â
19Â âSir,â the woman said, âI can see that you are a prophet.(N) 20Â Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(O) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.â(P)
21Â âWoman,â Jesus replied, âbelieve me, a time is coming(Q) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(R) 22Â You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(S) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(T) 23Â Yet a time is coming and has now come(U) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(V) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24Â God is spirit,(W) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.â
25Â The woman said, âI know that Messiahâ (called Christ)(X) âis coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.â
26Â Then Jesus declared, âI, the one speaking to youâI am he.â(Y)
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27Â Just then his disciples returned(Z) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, âWhat do you want?â or âWhy are you talking with her?â
28Â Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29Â âCome, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(AA) Could this be the Messiah?â(AB) 30Â They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31Â Meanwhile his disciples urged him, âRabbi,(AC) eat something.â
32Â But he said to them, âI have food to eat(AD) that you know nothing about.â
33Â Then his disciples said to each other, âCould someone have brought him food?â
34Â âMy food,â said Jesus, âis to do the will(AE) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(AF) 35Â Donât you have a saying, âItâs still four months until harvestâ? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(AG) 36Â Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(AH) a crop for eternal life,(AI) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37Â Thus the saying âOne sows and another reapsâ(AJ) is true. 38Â I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.â
Many Samaritans Believe
39Â Many of the Samaritans from that town(AK) believed in him because of the womanâs testimony, âHe told me everything I ever did.â(AL) 40Â So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41Â And because of his words many more became believers.
42Â They said to the woman, âWe no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.â(AM)
Jesus Heals an Officialâs Son
43Â After the two days(AN) he left for Galilee. 44Â (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(AO) 45Â When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(AP) for they also had been there.
46Â Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(AQ) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47Â When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(AR) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48Â âUnless you people see signs and wonders,â(AS) Jesus told him, âyou will never believe.â
49Â The royal official said, âSir, come down before my child dies.â
50Â âGo,â Jesus replied, âyour son will live.â
The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51Â While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52Â When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, âYesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.â
53Â Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, âYour son will live.â So he and his whole household(AT) believed.
54Â This was the second sign(AU) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
