Jesus and the Samaritan Woman
4 When Jesus[a] learned that the Pharisees(A) had heard he was making(B) and baptizing more disciples than John(C) 2 (though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were), 3 he left Judea(D) and went again to Galilee.(E) 4 He had to travel through Samaria;(F) 5 so he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property[b] that Jacob(G) had given his son Joseph.(H) 6 Jacob’s well(I) was there, and Jesus, worn out from his journey, sat down at the well. It was about noon.[c]
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water.(J)
“Give me a drink,” Jesus said to her, 8 because his disciples had gone into town to buy food.
9 “How is it that you, a Jew,(K) ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan(L) woman?” she asked him. For Jews do not associate with[d] Samaritans.[e]
10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God,(M) and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”(N)
11 “Sir,”(O) said the woman, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’? 12 You aren’t greater than our father Jacob,(P) are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.”
13 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again.(Q) In fact, the water I will give him will become a well[f](R) of water springing up in him for eternal life.”(S)
15 “Sir,” the woman said to him, “give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”
16 “Go call your husband,” he told her, “and come back here.”
17 “I don’t have a husband,” she answered.
“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said. 18 “For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(T) but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”(U)
21 Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.(V) 23 But an hour is coming, and is now here,(W) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth.[g] Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit,(X) and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.”(Y)
25 The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah(Z) is coming” (who is called Christ(AA)). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Jesus told her, “I, the one speaking to you, am he.”(AB)
The Ripened Harvest
27 Just then his disciples arrived, and they were amazed that he was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” (AC) 30 They left the town and made their way to him.(AD)
31 In the meantime the disciples kept urging him, “Rabbi,(AE) eat something.”
32 But he said, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”
33 The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?”
34 “My food is to do the will of him(AF) who sent me(AG) and to finish his work,”(AH) Jesus told them. 35 “Don’t you say, ‘There are still four more months, and then comes the harvest’? Listen to what I’m telling you: Open[h] your eyes and look at the fields, because they are ready[i] for harvest. 36 The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life,(AI) so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’(AJ) 38 I sent you to reap what you didn’t labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from[j] their labor.”
The Savior of the World
39 Now many Samaritans(AK) from that town believed in him because of what the woman said[k] when she testified,(AL) “He told me everything I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him,(AM) they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of what he said.[l] 42 And they told the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, since we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior(AN) of the world.”[m]
A Galilean Welcome
43 After two days he left there for Galilee.(AO) 44 (Jesus himself had testified(AP) that a prophet has no honor in his own country.(AQ)) 45 When(AR) they entered Galilee, the Galileans(AS) welcomed him because they had seen everything he did in Jerusalem(AT) during the festival.(AU) For they also had gone to the festival.
The Second Sign: Healing an Official’s Son
46 He went again to Cana(AV) of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.(AW) 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea(AX) into Galilee, he went to him and pleaded with him to come down and heal his son, since he was about to die.
48 Jesus told him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders,(AY) you will not believe.”(AZ)
49 “Sir,”(BA) the official said to him, “come down before my boy dies.”
50 “Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man believed what[n] Jesus said to him and departed.
51 While he was still going down, his servants met him saying that his boy was alive. 52 He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at one in the afternoon[o] the fever left him,” they answered. 53 The father(BB) realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” So he himself believed, along with his whole household.
54 Now this was also the second sign(BC) Jesus performed after he came from Judea to Galilee.(BD)

4 Domnul a aflat că fariseii au auzit că El face şi botează(A) mai mulţi ucenici decât Ioan. 2 Însă Isus nu boteza El Însuşi, ci ucenicii Lui. 3 Atunci a părăsit Iudeea şi S-a întors în Galileea. 4 Fiindcă trebuia să treacă prin Samaria, 5 a ajuns lângă o cetate din ţinutul Samariei, numită Sihar, aproape de ogorul pe(B) care-l dăduse Iacov fiului său Iosif. 6 Acolo se afla fântâna lui Iacov. Isus, ostenit de călătorie, şedea lângă fântână. Era cam pe la ceasul al şaselea. 7 A venit o femeie din Samaria să scoată apă. „Dă-Mi să beau”, i-a zis Isus. 8 Căci ucenicii Lui se duseseră în cetate să cumpere de ale mâncării. 9 Femeia samariteancă I-a zis: „Cum Tu, iudeu, ceri să bei de la mine, femeie samariteancă?” Iudeii(C), în adevăr, n-au legături cu samaritenii. 10 Drept răspuns, Isus i-a zis: „Dacă ai fi cunoscut tu darul lui Dumnezeu şi cine este Cel ce-ţi zice: ‘Dă-Mi să beau!’ tu singură ai fi cerut să bei, şi El ţi-ar fi dat apă(D) vie.” 11 „Doamne”, I-a zis femeia, „n-ai cu ce să scoţi apă, şi fântâna este adâncă, de unde ai putea să ai dar această apă vie? 12 Eşti Tu oare mai mare decât părintele nostru Iacov, care ne-a dat fântâna aceasta şi a băut din ea el însuşi şi feciorii lui şi vitele lui?” 13 Isus i-a răspuns: „Oricui bea din apa aceasta îi va fi iarăşi sete. 14 Dar oricui(E) va bea din apa pe care i-o voi da Eu în veac nu-i va fi sete, ba încă apa pe care i-o voi da Eu se(F) va preface în el într-un izvor de apă, care va ţâşni în viaţa veşnică.” 15 „Doamne”, I-a zis(G) femeia, „dă-mi această apă, ca să nu-mi mai fie sete şi să nu mai vin până aici să scot”. 16 „Du-te”, i-a zis Isus, „de cheamă pe bărbatul tău şi vino aici”. 17 Femeia I-a răspuns: „N-am bărbat”. Isus i-a zis: „Bine ai zis că n-ai bărbat. 18 Pentru că cinci bărbaţi ai avut, şi acela pe care-l ai acum nu-ţi este bărbat. Aici ai spus adevărul.” 19 „Doamne”, I-a zis femeia, „văd(H) că eşti proroc. 20 Părinţii noştri s-au închinat pe muntele acesta(I), şi voi ziceţi că în Ierusalim(J) este locul unde trebuie să se închine oamenii.” 21 „Femeie”, i-a zis Isus, „crede-Mă că vine ceasul când(K) nu vă veţi închina Tatălui nici pe muntele acesta, nici în Ierusalim. 22 Voi vă închinaţi la ce(L) nu cunoaşteţi, noi ne închinăm la ce cunoaştem, căci(M) mântuirea vine de la iudei. 23 Dar vine ceasul, şi acum a şi venit, când închinătorii adevăraţi se vor închina Tatălui în duh(N) şi(O) în adevăr, fiindcă astfel de închinători doreşte şi Tatăl. 24 Dumnezeu(P) este Duh, şi cine se închină Lui trebuie să I se închine în duh şi în adevăr.” 25 „Ştiu”, i-a zis femeia, „că are să vină Mesia (căruia I se zise Hristos); când va veni El, are să ne(Q) spună toate lucrurile”. 26 Isus i-a zis: „Eu(R), cel care vorbesc cu tine, sunt Acela”.
Trezirea din Samaria
27 Atunci au venit ucenicii Lui şi se mirau că vorbea cu o femeie. Totuşi niciunul nu I-a zis: „Ce cauţi?” sau „Despre ce vorbeşti cu ea?” 28 Atunci, femeia şi-a lăsat găleata, s-a dus în cetate şi a zis oamenilor: 29 „Veniţi de vedeţi un om care(S) mi-a spus tot ce am făcut. Nu cumva este acesta Hristosul?” 30 Ei au ieşit din cetate şi veneau spre El. 31 În timpul acesta, ucenicii Îl rugau să mănânce şi ziceau: „Învăţătorule, mănâncă!” 32 Dar El le-a zis: „Eu am de mâncat o mâncare pe care voi n-o cunoaşteţi”. 33 Ucenicii au început să-şi zică deci unii altora: „Nu cumva I-a adus cineva să mănânce?” 34 Isus le-a zis: „Mâncarea(T) Mea este să fac voia Celui ce M-a trimis şi să împlinesc lucrarea Lui. 35 Nu ziceţi voi că mai sunt patru luni până la seceriş? Iată, Eu vă spun: Ridicaţi-vă ochii şi priviţi holdele, care(U) sunt albe acum, gata pentru seceriş. 36 Cine(V) seceră primeşte o plată şi strânge rod pentru viaţa veşnică, pentru ca şi cel ce seamănă şi cel ce seceră să se bucure în acelaşi timp. 37 Căci, în această privinţă, este adevărată zicerea: ‘Unul seamănă, iar altul seceră’. 38 Eu v-am trimis să seceraţi acolo unde nu voi v-aţi ostenit, alţii s-au ostenit, şi voi aţi intrat în osteneala lor.” 39 Mulţi samariteni din cetatea aceea au crezut în Isus din pricina(W) mărturiei femeii, care zicea: „Mi-a spus tot ce am făcut”. 40 Când au venit samaritenii la El, L-au rugat să rămână la ei. Şi El a rămas acolo două zile. 41 Mult mai mulţi au crezut în El din pricina cuvintelor Lui. 42 Şi ziceau femeii: „Acum nu mai credem din pricina spuselor tale, ci din pricină că L-am auzit noi înşine(X) şi ştim că Acesta este în adevăr Hristosul, Mântuitorul lumii”.
Vindecarea fiului unui slujbaş împărătesc
43 După aceste două zile, Isus a plecat de acolo ca să se ducă în Galileea. 44 Căci(Y) El Însuşi spusese că un proroc nu este preţuit în patria(Z) sa. 45 Când a ajuns în Galileea, a fost primit bine de galileeni, care văzuseră tot ce făcuse la Ierusalim în timpul praznicului; căci(AA) fuseseră şi ei la praznic. 46 Isus S-a întors deci în Cana din Galileea, unde(AB) prefăcuse apa în vin. În Capernaum era un slujbaş împărătesc al cărui fiu era bolnav. 47 Slujbaşul acesta a aflat că Isus venise din Iudeea în Galileea, s-a dus la El şi L-a rugat să vină şi să tămăduiască pe fiul lui, care era pe moarte. 48 Isus i-a zis: „Dacă(AC) nu vedeţi semne şi minuni, cu niciun chip nu credeţi!” 49 Slujbaşul împărătesc I-a zis: „Doamne, vino până nu moare micuţul meu”. 50 „Du-te”, i-a zis Isus, „fiul tău trăieşte”. Şi omul acela a crezut cuvintele pe care i le spusese Isus şi a pornit la drum. 51 Pe când se pogora el, l-au întâmpinat robii lui şi i-au adus vestea că fiul lui trăieşte. 52 El i-a întrebat de ceasul în care a început să-i fie mai bine. Şi ei i-au zis: „Ieri, în ceasul al şaptelea, l-au lăsat frigurile”. 53 Tatăl a cunoscut că tocmai în ceasul acela îi zisese Isus: „Fiul tău trăieşte”. Şi a crezut el şi toată casa lui. 54 Acesta este iarăşi al doilea semn făcut de Isus după ce S-a întors din Iudeea în Galileea.
