Jesus Goes to Galilee

4 So then, when (A)the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that [a]He was making and (B)baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although (C)Jesus Himself was not baptizing; rather, His (D)disciples were), 3 He left (E)Judea and went away (F)again to Galilee. 4 And He had to pass through (G)Samaria. 5 So He *came to a city of (H)Samaria called Sychar, near (I)the parcel of land that (J)Jacob gave to his son Joseph; 6 and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, tired from His journey, was just sitting by the well. It was about [b]the sixth hour.

The Woman of Samaria

7 A woman of Samaria *came to draw water. Jesus *said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His (K)disciples had gone away to (L)the city to buy food. 9 So the (M)Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, though You are a Jew, are asking me for a drink, though I am a Samaritan woman?” (For (N)Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (O)living water.” 11 She *said to Him, “[c]Sir, You have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do You get this (P)living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who (Q)gave us the well and drank of it himself, and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (R)shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to (S)eternal life.”

15 The woman *said to Him, “[d]Sir, (T)give me this water so that I will not be thirsty, nor come all the way here to draw water.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said to Him, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[e]Sir, I perceive that You are (U)a prophet. 20 (V)Our fathers worshiped on (W)this mountain, and yet you Jews say that (X)in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Believe Me, woman, that [f](Y)a time is coming when you will worship the Father (Z)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 (AA)You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, because (AB)salvation is from the Jews. 23 But [g](AC)a time is coming, and [h]even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (AD)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be [i]His worshipers. 24 God is [j]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (AE)in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (AF)Messiah is coming ((AG)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, “(AH)I am He, the One speaking to you.”

27 And at this point His (AI)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What are You seeking?” or, “Why are You speaking with her?” 28 So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people, 29 “Come, see a Man (AJ)who told me all the things that I have done; (AK)this is not the [k]Christ, is He?” 30 They left the city and were coming to Him.

31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “(AL)Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the (AM)disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to (AN)do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (AO)accomplish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I tell you, raise your eyes and observe the fields, that they are white (AP)for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving (AQ)wages and is gathering (AR)fruit for (AS)eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true: ‘(AT)One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have [l]come into their labor.”

The Samaritans

39 Now from (AU)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “(AV)He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to [m]Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One truly is (AW)the Savior of the world.”

43 And after (AX)the two days, He departed from there for Galilee. 44 For Jesus Himself testified that (AY)a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, only because (AZ)they had seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Healing an Official’s Son

46 Therefore He came again to (BA)Cana of Galilee, (BB)where He had made the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at (BC)Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come (BD)from Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and began asking Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. 48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see [n](BE)signs and (BF)wonders, you simply will not believe.” 49 The royal official *said to Him, “[o]Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus *said to him, “(BG)Go; your son [p]is alive.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went home. 51 And as he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his [q]son was [r]alive. 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the [s]seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son is alive”; and he himself believed, and (BH)his entire household. 54 This is again a (BI)second [t]sign that Jesus performed when He had (BJ)come from Judea into Galilee.

Jésus et la femme samaritaine

4 Le Seigneur apprit que les pharisiens avaient entendu dire qu'il faisait et baptisait plus de disciples que Jean. 2 – A vrai dire Jésus ne baptisait pas lui-même, mais c'étaient ses disciples qui le faisaient. – 3 Alors il quitta la Judée et retourna en Galilée. 4 Comme il devait traverser la Samarie, 5 il arriva dans une ville de Samarie appelée Sychar, près du champ que Jacob avait donné à son fils Joseph. 6 Là se trouvait le puits de Jacob. Jésus, fatigué du voyage, était assis au bord du puits. C'était environ midi.

7 Une femme de Samarie vint puiser de l'eau. Jésus lui dit: «Donne-moi à boire.» 8 En effet, ses disciples étaient allés à la ville pour acheter de quoi manger. 9 La femme samaritaine lui dit: «Comment? Toi qui es juif, tu me demandes à boire, à moi qui suis une femme samaritaine?» ( Les Juifs, en effet, n'ont pas de relations avec les Samaritains. ( 10 Jésus lui répondit: «Si tu savais quel est le cadeau de Dieu et qui est celui qui te dit: ‘Donne-moi à boire’, tu lui aurais toi-même demandé à boire et il t'aurait donné de l'eau vive.» 11 «Seigneur, lui dit la femme, tu n'as rien pour puiser et le puits est profond. D'où aurais-tu donc cette eau vive? 12 Es-tu, toi, plus grand que notre ancêtre Jacob qui nous a donné ce puits et qui a bu de son eau, lui-même, ses fils et ses troupeaux?» 13 Jésus lui répondit: «Toute personne qui boit de cette eau-ci aura encore soif. 14 En revanche, celui qui boira de l'eau que je lui donnerai n'aura plus jamais soif et l'eau que je lui donnerai deviendra en lui une source d'eau qui jaillira jusque dans la vie éternelle.» 15 La femme lui dit: «Seigneur, donne-moi cette eau afin que je n'aie plus soif et que je n’aie plus à venir puiser ici.» 16 «Va appeler ton mari, lui dit Jésus, et reviens ici.» 17 La femme répondit: «Je n'ai pas de mari.» Jésus lui dit: «Tu as bien fait de dire: ‘Je n'ai pas de mari’, 18 car tu as eu cinq maris et l'homme que tu as maintenant n'est pas ton mari. En cela tu as dit la vérité.» 19 «Seigneur, lui dit la femme, je vois que tu es un prophète. 20 Nos ancêtres ont adoré sur cette montagne et vous dites, vous, que l'endroit où il faut adorer est à Jérusalem.» 21 «Femme, lui dit Jésus, crois-moi, l'heure vient où ce ne sera ni sur cette montagne ni à Jérusalem que vous adorerez le Père. 22 Vous adorez ce que vous ne connaissez pas; nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons, car le salut vient des Juifs. 23 Mais l'heure vient, et elle est déjà là, où les vrais adorateurs adoreront le Père en esprit et en vérité. En effet, ce sont là les adorateurs que recherche le Père. 24 Dieu est Esprit et il faut que ceux qui l'adorent l'adorent en esprit et en vérité.» 25 La femme lui dit: «Je sais que le Messie doit venir, celui que l'on appelle Christ. Quand il sera venu, il nous annoncera tout.» 26 Jésus lui dit: «Je le suis, moi qui te parle.»

27 Là-dessus arrivèrent ses disciples, et ils étaient étonnés de ce qu'il parlait avec une femme. Toutefois, aucun ne dit: «Que lui demandes-tu?» ou: «Pourquoi parles-tu avec elle?» 28 Alors la femme laissa sa cruche, s'en alla dans la ville et dit aux habitants: 29 «Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit [tout] ce que j'ai fait. Ne serait-il pas le Messie?» 30 Ils sortirent de la ville et vinrent vers lui.

31 Pendant ce temps, les disciples le pressaient en disant: «Maître, mange.» 32 Mais il leur dit: «J'ai à manger une nourriture que vous ne connaissez pas.» 33 Les disciples se disaient donc les uns aux autres: «Quelqu'un lui aurait-il apporté à manger?» 34 Jésus leur dit: «Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé et d'accomplir son œuvre. 35 Ne dites-vous pas qu'il y a encore quatre mois jusqu'à la moisson? Eh bien, je vous le dis, levez les yeux et regardez les champs: ils sont déjà blancs pour la moisson. 36 Celui qui moissonne reçoit un salaire et amasse du fruit pour la vie éternelle, afin que celui qui sème et celui qui moissonne se réjouissent ensemble. 37 En effet, en cela cette parole est vraie: ‘L'un sème et l'autre moissonne.’ 38 Je vous ai envoyés récolter une moisson qui ne vous a pas demandé de travail; d'autres ont travaillé et vous êtes entrés dans leur travail.»

39 Beaucoup de Samaritains de cette ville crurent en Jésus à cause des paroles de la femme qui rendait ce témoignage: «Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait.» 40 Ainsi donc, quand ils vinrent le trouver, les Samaritains le prièrent de rester avec eux. Il resta là deux jours. 41 Un bien plus grand nombre crurent à cause des paroles de Jésus, 42 et ils disaient à la femme: «Ce n'est plus seulement à cause de ce que tu as dit que nous croyons, car nous l'avons entendu nous-mêmes et nous savons qu'il est vraiment [le Messie,] le Sauveur du monde.»

Guérison du fils d'un officier

43 Après ces deux jours, Jésus partit de là pour se rendre en Galilée, 44 car il avait déclaré lui-même qu'un prophète n'est pas honoré dans sa propre patrie. 45 Lorsqu'il arriva en Galilée, il fut bien accueilli par les Galiléens qui avaient vu tout ce qu'il avait fait à Jérusalem pendant la fête. En effet, eux aussi étaient allés à la fête. 46 Jésus retourna donc à Cana en Galilée, où il avait changé l'eau en vin. Il y avait à Capernaüm un officier du roi dont le fils était malade. 47 Quand il apprit que Jésus était venu de Judée en Galilée, il alla le trouver et le pria de descendre guérir son fils, car il était sur le point de mourir. 48 Jésus lui dit: «Si vous ne voyez pas des signes et des prodiges, vous ne croirez donc pas?» 49 L'officier du roi lui dit: «Seigneur, descends avant que mon enfant ne meure!» 50 «Vas-y, lui dit Jésus, ton fils vit.» Cet homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui avait dite et s'en alla. 51 Il était déjà en train de redescendre lorsque ses serviteurs vinrent à sa rencontre et lui dirent: «Ton enfant vit.» 52 Il leur demanda à quelle heure il était allé mieux et ils lui dirent: «C’est hier, à une heure de l'après-midi, que la fièvre l'a quitté.» 53 Le père reconnut que c'était à cette heure-là que Jésus lui avait dit: «Ton fils vit.» Alors il crut, lui et toute sa famille. 54 Jésus fit ce deuxième signe miraculeux après être revenu de Judée en Galilée.
