⁶ Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest^(A) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are^(B)—yet he did not sin.^(C)

¹⁷ For this reason he had to be made like them,^[a](A) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful^(B) and faithful high priest^(C) in service to God,^(D) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.^(E)

²⁴ Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

The Death of Jesus^(A)

⁴⁵ From noon until three in the afternoon darkness^(B) came over all the land.

² After fasting forty days and forty nights,^(A) he was hungry.

⁹ For you know the grace^(A) of our Lord Jesus Christ,^(B) that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,^(C) so that you through his poverty might become rich.^(D)

⁹ Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.^(A)

⁵⁸ Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man^(A) has no place to lay his head.”

⁷ and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
