²⁹ “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah,^[a] can he?”^(A)

²⁴ But if all prophesy, an unbeliever or outsider who enters is reproved by all and called to account by all. ²⁵ After the secrets of the unbeliever’s heart are disclosed, that person will bow down before God and worship, declaring, “God is really among you.”

²⁵ The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.”^(A)

¹⁷ The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband,’ ¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!”

⁴¹ He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed^[a]).^{(A) 42} He brought Simon^[b] to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas”^[c] (which is translated Peter^[d]).^(B)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

⁴³ The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”^{(C) 44} Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.^{(D) 45} Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.”^{(E) 46} Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”^{(F) 47} When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”^{(G) 48} Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” ⁴⁹ Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”^(H)

³¹ Yet many in the crowd believed in him and were saying, “When the Messiah^[a] comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?”^[b](A)

²⁶ And here he is, speaking openly, but they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Messiah?^[a]

²³ All the crowds were amazed and were saying, “Can this be the Son of David?”^(A)
