13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(A) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(B) welling up to eternal life.”(C)

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(D) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(E) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(F) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(G)

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(H) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(I) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(J) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(K) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(L) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(M) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(N) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(O) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(P)

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

27 Just then his disciples returned(Q) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but (A)whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him (B)will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

15 (C)The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”

Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, (D)I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on (E)this mountain, and you Jews say that in (F)Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”

21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming (G)when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship (H)what you do not know; we know what we worship, for (I)salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will (J)worship the Father in (K)spirit (L)and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 (M)God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah (N)is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, (O)He will tell us all things.”

26 Jesus said to her, (P)“I who speak to you am He.

The Whitened Harvest

27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”

15 The woman *said to Him, “[a]Sir, (C)give me this water so that I will not be thirsty, nor come all the way here to draw water.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said to Him, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[b]Sir, I perceive that You are (D)a prophet. 20 (E)Our fathers worshiped on (F)this mountain, and yet you Jews say that (G)in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Believe Me, woman, that [c](H)a time is coming when you will worship the Father (I)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 (J)You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, because (K)salvation is from the Jews. 23 But [d](L)a time is coming, and [e]even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (M)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be [f]His worshipers. 24 God is [g]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (N)in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman *said to Him, “I know that (O)Messiah is coming ((P)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, (Q)I am He, the One speaking to you.”

27 And at this point His (R)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What are You seeking?” or, “Why are You speaking with her?”
