Jesus and the Woman of Samaria

4 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and ^(A)baptizing more disciples than John ² (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), ³ he left Judea and departed ^(B)again for Galilee. ^4 (C)And he had to pass through Samaria. ⁵ So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field ^(D)that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. ⁶ Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, ^(E)wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.^[a]

⁷ A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ^(F)“Give me a drink.” ⁸ (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) ⁹ The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (^(G)For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) ¹⁰ Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you ^(H)living water.” ¹¹ The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? ^12 (I)Are you greater than our father Jacob? ^(J)He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” ¹³ Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but ^(K)whoever drinks of the water that I will give him ^(L)will never be thirsty again.^[b] The water that I will give him will become ^(M)in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” ¹⁵ The woman said to him, “Sir, ^(N)give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

¹⁶ Jesus said to her, “Go, ^(O)call your husband, and come here.” ¹⁷ The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; ¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” ¹⁹ The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that ^(P)you are ^(Q)a prophet. ^20 (R)Our fathers worshiped on ^(S)this mountain, but you say that ^(T)in Jerusalem is ^(U)the place where people ought to worship.” ²¹ Jesus said to her, ^(V)“Woman, believe me, ^(W)the hour is coming when ^(X)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. ^22 (Y)You worship what you do not know; ^(Z)we worship what we know, for ^(AA)salvation is ^(AB)from the Jews. ²³ But ^(AC)the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father ^(AD)in spirit and ^(AE)truth, for the Father ^(AF)is seeking such people to worship him. ²⁴ God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” ²⁵ The woman said to him, “I know that ^(AG)Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, ^(AH)he will tell us all things.” ²⁶ Jesus said to her, ^(AI)“I who speak to you am he.”

²⁷ Just then ^(AJ)his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” ²⁸ So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, ²⁹ “Come, see a man ^(AK)who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” ³⁰ They went out of the town and were coming to him.

³¹ Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, ^(AL)“Rabbi, eat.” ³² But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” ³³ So the disciples said to one another, ^(AM)“Has anyone brought him something to eat?” ³⁴ Jesus said to them, ^(AN)“My food is ^(AO)to do the will of him who sent me and ^(AP)to accomplish his work. ³⁵ Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that ^(AQ)the fields are white for harvest. ³⁶ Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that ^(AR)sower and ^(AS)reaper ^(AT)may rejoice together. ³⁷ For here the saying holds true, ^(AU)‘One sows and another reaps.’ ³⁸ I sent you to reap ^(AV)that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, ^(AW)and you have entered into their labor.”

³⁹ Many Samaritans ^(AX)from that town believed in him ^(AY)because of ^(AZ)the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” ⁴⁰ So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. ⁴¹ And many more believed ^(BA)because of his word. ⁴² They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, ^(BB)and we know that this is indeed ^(BC)the Savior ^(BD)of the world.”

⁴³ After ^(BE)the two days he departed for Galilee. ⁴⁴ (For Jesus himself had testified ^(BF)that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) ⁴⁵ So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, ^(BG)having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For ^(BH)they too had gone to the feast.

Jesus Heals an Official's Son

⁴⁶ So he came again to ^(BI)Cana in Galilee, ^(BJ)where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. ⁴⁷ When this man heard that Jesus ^(BK)had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. ⁴⁸ So Jesus said to him, ^(BL)“Unless you^[c] see signs and wonders you will not believe.” ⁴⁹ The official said to him, “Sir, come down ^(BM)before my child dies.” ⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. ⁵¹ As he was going down, his servants^[d] met him and told him that his son was recovering. ⁵² So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour^[e] the fever left him.” ⁵³ The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, ^(BN)and all his household. ^54 (BO)This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

48 “These are the names of the tribes: Beginning at the northern extreme, beside ^(A)the way of Hethlon ^(B)to Lebo-hamath, as far as ^(C)Hazar-enan (which is on the northern border of ^(D)Damascus over against Hamath), and extending^[a] from the east side to the west,^{[b] (E)}Dan, one portion. ² Adjoining the territory of Dan, from the east side to the west, ^(F)Asher, one portion. ³ Adjoining the territory of Asher, from the east side to the west, ^(G)Naphtali, one portion. ⁴ Adjoining the territory of Naphtali, from the east side to the west, Manasseh, one portion. ⁵ Adjoining the territory of Manasseh, from the east side to the west, Ephraim, one portion. ⁶ Adjoining the territory of Ephraim, from the east side to the west, Reuben, one portion. ⁷ Adjoining the territory of Reuben, from the east side to the west, Judah, one portion.

⁸ “Adjoining the territory of Judah, from the east side to the west, shall be ^(H)the portion which you shall set apart, 25,000 cubits^[c] in breadth, and in length equal to one of the tribal portions, from the east side to the west, with ^(I)the sanctuary in the midst of it. ⁹ The portion that you shall set apart for the Lord shall be 25,000 cubits in length, and 20,000^[d] in breadth. ^10 (J)These shall be the allotments of the holy portion: the priests shall have an allotment measuring 25,000 cubits on the northern side, 10,000 cubits in breadth on the western side, 10,000 in breadth on the eastern side, and 25,000 in length on the southern side, with the sanctuary of the Lord in the midst of it. ¹¹ This shall be for ^(K)the consecrated priests, ^(L)the sons of Zadok, who kept my charge, who did not go astray when the people of Israel went astray, ^(M)as the Levites did. ¹² And it shall belong to them as a special portion from the holy portion of the land, a most holy place, adjoining the territory of the Levites. ^13 (N)And alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites shall have an allotment 25,000 cubits in length and 10,000 in breadth. The whole length shall be 25,000 cubits and the breadth 20,000.^{[e] 14} They ^(O)shall not sell or exchange any of it. They shall not alienate ^(P)this choice portion of the land, for it is holy to the Lord.

^15 (Q)“The remainder, 5,000 cubits in breadth and 25,000 in length, shall be ^(R)for common use for the city, for dwellings and for ^(S)open country. In the midst of it shall be the city, ¹⁶ and these shall be its measurements: ^(T)the north side 4,500 cubits, the south side 4,500, the east side 4,500, and the west side 4,500. ¹⁷ And the city shall have open land: on the north 250 cubits, on the south 250, on the east 250, and on the west 250. ¹⁸ The remainder of the length alongside the holy portion shall be 10,000 cubits to the east, and 10,000 to the west, and it shall be alongside the holy portion. ^(U)Its produce shall be food for the workers of the city. ¹⁹ And the workers of the city, from all the tribes of Israel, shall till it. ²⁰ The whole portion that ^(V)you shall set apart shall be 25,000 cubits square, that is, the holy portion together with the property of the city.

^21 (W)“What remains on both sides of the holy portion and of the property of the city shall belong to the prince. Extending from the 25,000 cubits of the holy portion to the east border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the west border, parallel to the tribal portions, it shall belong to the prince. ^(X)The holy portion with the sanctuary of the temple shall be in its midst. ²² It shall be separate from the property of the Levites and the property of the city, which are in the midst of that which belongs to the prince. The portion of the prince shall lie between the territory of Judah and the territory of Benjamin.

²³ “As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west, Benjamin, one portion. ²⁴ Adjoining the territory of Benjamin, from the east side to the west, Simeon, one portion. ²⁵ Adjoining the territory of Simeon, from the east side to the west, Issachar, one portion. ²⁶ Adjoining the territory of Issachar, from the east side to the west, Zebulun, one portion. ²⁷ Adjoining the territory of Zebulun, from the east side to the west, Gad, one portion. ²⁸ And adjoining the territory of Gad to the south, the boundary shall run ^(Y)from Tamar to the waters of ^(Z)Meribah-kadesh, from there along the Brook of Egypt^[f] to ^(AA)the Great Sea.^{[g] 29} This is the land that ^(AB)you shall allot as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, declares the Lord God.

The Gates of the City

³⁰ “These shall be ^(AC)the exits of the city: On the north side, which is to be ^(AD)4,500 cubits by measure, ^31 (AE)three gates, the gate of ^(AF)Reuben, the gate of ^(AG)Judah, and the gate of ^(AH)Levi, the gates of the city being named after the tribes of Israel. ³² On the east side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates, the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan. ³³ On the south side, which is to be 4,500 cubits by measure, three gates, the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun. ³⁴ On the west side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates,^[h] the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali. ³⁵ The circumference of the city shall be 18,000 cubits. And ^(AI)the name of the city from that time on shall be, ^(AJ)The Lord Is There.”

Daniel Taken to Babylon

1 In the third year of ^(AK)the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. ² And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of ^(AL)the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to ^(AM)the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, ^(AN)and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. ³ Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, ^(AO)his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family^[i] and of ^(AP)the nobility, ⁴ youths without ^(AQ)blemish, of good appearance and ^(AR)skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king's palace, and to ^(AS)teach them the literature and language of the ^(AT)Chaldeans. ⁵ The king assigned them a daily portion of ^(AU)the food that the king ate, and of ^(AV)the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for ^(AW)three years, and at the end of that time they were to ^(AX)stand before the king. ⁶ Among these were ^(AY)Daniel, ^(AZ)Hananiah, ^(BA)Mishael, and ^(BB)Azariah of the tribe of Judah. ⁷ And ^(BC)the chief of the eunuchs ^(BD)gave them names: ^(BE)Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.

Daniel's Faithfulness

⁸ But Daniel ^(BF)resolved that he would not ^(BG)defile himself with ^(BH)the king's food, or with ^(BI)the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to ^(BJ)defile himself. ^9 (BK)And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs, ¹⁰ and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king.” ¹¹ Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, ¹² “Test your servants for ^(BL)ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. ¹³ Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat ^(BM)the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” ¹⁴ So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. ¹⁵ At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate ^(BN)the king's food. ^16 (BO)So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them ^(BP)vegetables.

¹⁷ As for these four youths, ^(BQ)God gave them learning and ^(BR)skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had ^(BS)understanding in all visions and dreams. ¹⁸ At the end of ^(BT)the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. ¹⁹ And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore ^(BU)they stood before the king. ²⁰ And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all ^(BV)the magicians and ^(BW)enchanters that were in all his kingdom. ²¹ And Daniel ^(BX)was there until the first year of ^(BY)King Cyrus.

Nebuchadnezzar's Dream

2 In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; ^(BZ)his spirit was troubled, and ^(CA)his sleep left him. ² Then the king commanded that ^(CB)the magicians, ^(CC)the enchanters, the ^(CD)sorcerers, and ^(CE)the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and ^(CF)stood before the king. ³ And the king said to them, “I had a dream, and ^(CG)my spirit is troubled to know the dream.” ⁴ Then ^(CH)the Chaldeans said to the king in Aramaic,^{[j] (CI)}“O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.” ⁵ The king answered and said to ^(CJ)the Chaldeans, “The word from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be ^(CK)torn limb from limb, ^(CL)and your ^(CM)houses shall be laid in ruins. ⁶ But if you show the dream and its interpretation, ^(CN)you shall receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. ^(CO)Therefore show me the dream and its interpretation.” ⁷ They answered a second time and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation.” ⁸ The king answered and said, “I know with certainty that you are trying to ^(CP)gain time, because you see that the word from me is firm— ⁹ if you do not make the dream known to me, ^(CQ)there is but one sentence for you. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till ^(CR)the times change. ^(CS)Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.” ^10 (CT)The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can meet the king's demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or ^(CU)Chaldean. ¹¹ The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except ^(CV)the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”

¹² Because of this the king was angry and ^(CW)very furious, and ^(CX)commanded that all ^(CY)the wise men of Babylon be destroyed. ¹³ So the decree went out, and the wise men were about to be killed; and they sought ^(CZ)Daniel and his companions, to kill them. ¹⁴ Then Daniel replied with prudence and discretion to ^(DA)Arioch, the ^(DB)captain of the king's guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon. ¹⁵ He declared^[k] to Arioch, the king's captain, “Why is the decree of the king ^(DC)so urgent?” Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel. ¹⁶ And Daniel went in and requested the king to appoint him a time, that he might show the interpretation to the king.

God Reveals Nebuchadnezzar's Dream

¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to ^(DD)Hananiah, ^(DE)Mishael, and ^(DF)Azariah, his companions, ^18 (DG)and told them to seek mercy from the ^(DH)God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not ^(DI)be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. ¹⁹ Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in ^(DJ)a vision of the night. Then Daniel ^(DK)blessed the ^(DL)God of heaven. ²⁰ Daniel answered and said:

²⁴ Therefore Daniel went in to ^(DZ)Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon. He went and said thus to him: “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon; bring me in before the king, and I will show the king the interpretation.”

²⁵ Then ^(EA)Arioch brought in Daniel before the king ^(EB)in haste and said thus to him: “I have found ^(EC)among the exiles from Judah a man who will make known to the king the interpretation.” ²⁶ The king declared to Daniel, ^(ED)whose name was Belteshazzar, ^(EE)“Are you able to make known to me the dream that I have seen and its interpretation?” ²⁷ Daniel answered the king and said, “No wise men, ^(EF)enchanters, ^(EG)magicians, or ^(EH)astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked, ²⁸ but ^(EI)there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar ^(EJ)what will be in the latter days. Your dream and ^(EK)the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these: ²⁹ To you, O king, as you lay in bed came thoughts of what would be after this, ^(EL)and he who reveals mysteries made known to you what is to be. ³⁰ But ^(EM)as for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because of any wisdom that I have more than all the living, but in order that the interpretation may be made known to the king, and that ^(EN)you may know the thoughts of your mind.

Daniel Interprets the Dream

³¹ “You saw, O king, and behold, a great image. This image, mighty and of exceeding brightness, stood before you, and its appearance was frightening. ^32 (EO)The head of this image was of fine gold, ^(EP)its chest and arms of silver, its middle and ^(EQ)thighs of bronze, ^33 (ER)its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. ³⁴ As you looked, a stone was cut out ^(ES)by no human hand, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and ^(ET)broke them in pieces. ³⁵ Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces, and became ^(EU)like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that ^(EV)not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the image became ^(EW)a great mountain ^(EX)and filled the whole earth.

³⁶ “This was the dream. Now we will tell the king its interpretation. ³⁷ You, O king, ^(EY)the king of kings, to whom ^(EZ)the God of heaven ^(FA)has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, ³⁸ and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, ^(FB)the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all—you are ^(FC)the head of gold. ^39 (FD)Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you, and yet a third kingdom ^(FE)of bronze, ^(FF)which shall rule over all the earth. ⁴⁰ And ^(FG)there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron ^(FH)breaks to pieces and shatters all things. And like iron that crushes, it shall ^(FI)break and crush all these. ⁴¹ And as you saw ^(FJ)the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but some of the ^(FK)firmness of iron shall be in it, just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay. ⁴² And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle. ⁴³ As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay, so they will mix with one another in marriage,^[l] but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay. ⁴⁴ And in the days of those kings ^(FL)the God of heaven will set up ^(FM)a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. ^(FN)It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and ^(FO)it shall stand forever, ⁴⁵ just as ^(FP)you saw that ^(FQ)a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that ^(FR)it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A ^(FS)great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”

Daniel Is Promoted

⁴⁶ Then King Nebuchadnezzar ^(FT)fell upon his face and ^(FU)paid homage to Daniel, and commanded that ^(FV)an offering and ^(FW)incense be offered up to him. ⁴⁷ The king answered and said to Daniel, “Truly, your ^(FX)God is God of gods and ^(FY)Lord of kings, and ^(FZ)a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.” ⁴⁸ Then the king gave Daniel high honors and many great ^(GA)gifts, and made him ruler over the whole ^(GB)province of Babylon and ^(GC)chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. ⁴⁹ Daniel made a request of the king, and he ^(GD)appointed ^(GE)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of ^(GF)the province of Babylon. But Daniel ^(GG)remained at the king's court.
