3 有 一 个 法 利 赛 人 ， 名 叫 尼 哥 底 母 ， 是 犹 太 人 的 官 。
2 这 人 夜 里 来 见 耶 稣 ， 说 「 拉 比 ， 我 们 知 道 你 是 由 神 那 来 作 师 傅 的 ； 因 为 你 所 行 的 神 迹 ， 若 没 有 神 同 在 ， 无 人 能 行 。 」
3 耶 稣 回 答 说 ： 「 我 实 实 在 在 地 告 诉 你 ， 人 若 不 重 生 ， 就 不 能 见 神 的 国 。 」
4 尼 哥 底 母 说 ： 「 人 已 经 老 了 ， 如 何 能 重 生 呢 ？ 岂 能 再 进 母 腹 生 出 来 吗 ？ 」
5 耶 稣 说 ： 「 我 实 实 在 在 的 告 诉 你 ， 人 若 不 是 从 水 和 圣 灵 生 的 ， 就 不 能 进 神 的 国 。
6 从 肉 身 生 的 就 是 肉 身 ； 从 灵 生 的 就 是 灵 。
7 我 说 ： 『 你 们 必 须 重 生 』 ， 你 不 要 以 为 希 奇 。
8 风 随 着 意 思 吹 ， 你 听 见 风 的 响 声 ， 却 不 晓 得 从 那 里 来 ， 往 那 里 去 ； 凡 从 圣 灵 生 的 ， 也 是 如 此 。 」
9 尼 哥 底 母 问 他 说 ： 「 怎 能 有 这 事 呢 ？ 」
10 耶 稣 回 答 说 ： 「 你 是 以 色 列 人 的 先 生 ， 还 不 明 白 这 事 吗 ？
11 我 实 实 在 在 的 告 诉 你 ， 我 们 所 说 的 是 我 们 知 道 的 ； 我 们 所 见 证 的 是 我 们 见 过 的 ； 你 们 却 不 领 受 我 们 的 见 证 。
12 我 对 你 们 说 地 上 的 事 ， 你 们 尚 且 不 信 ， 若 说 天 上 的 事 ， 如 何 能 信 呢 ？
13 除 了 从 天 降 下 、 仍 旧 在 天 的 人 子 ， 没 有 人 升 过 天 。
14 摩 西 在 旷 野 怎 样 举 蛇 ， 人 子 也 必 照 样 被 举 起 来 ，
15 叫 一 切 信 他 的 都 得 永 生 （ 或 作 ： 叫 一 切 信 的 人 在 他 里 面 得 永 生 ） 。
16 「 神 爱 世 人 ， 甚 至 将 他 的 独 生 子 赐 给 他 们 ， 叫 一 切 信 他 的 ， 不 至 灭 亡 ， 反 得 永 生 。
17 因 为 神 差 他 的 儿 子 降 世 ， 不 是 要 定 世 人 的 罪 （ 或 作 ： 审 判 世 人 ； 下 同 ） ， 乃 是 要 叫 世 人 因 他 得 救 。
18 信 他 的 人 ， 不 被 定 罪 ； 不 信 的 人 ， 罪 已 经 定 了 ， 因 为 他 不 信 神 独 生 子 的 名 。
19 光 来 到 世 间 ， 世 人 因 自 己 的 行 为 是 恶 的 ， 不 爱 光 ， 倒 爱 黑 暗 ， 定 他 们 的 罪 就 是 在 此 。
20 凡 作 恶 的 便 恨 光 ， 并 不 来 就 光 ， 恐 怕 他 的 行 为 受 责 备 。
21 但 行 真 理 的 必 来 就 光 ， 要 显 明 他 所 行 的 是 靠 神 而 行 。 」
22 这 事 以 後 ， 耶 稣 和 门 徒 到 了 犹 太 地 ， 在 那 里 居 住 ， 施 洗 。

28 我 曾 说 ： 『 我 不 是 基 督 ， 是 奉 差 遣 在 他 前 面 的 』 ， 你 们 自 己 可 以 给 我 作 见 证 。
29 娶 新 妇 的 就 是 新 郎 ； 新 郎 的 朋 友 站 着 ， 听 见 新 郎 的 声 音 就 甚 喜 乐 。 故 此 ， 我 这 喜 乐 满 足 了 。
30 他 必 兴 旺 ， 我 必 衰 微 。 」
31 「 从 天 上 来 的 是 在 万 有 之 上 ； 从 地 上 来 的 是 属 乎 地 ， 他 所 说 的 也 是 属 乎 地 。 从 天 上 来 的 是 在 万 有 之 上 。
32 他 将 所 见 所 闻 的 见 证 出 来 ， 只 是 没 有 人 领 受 他 的 见 证 。
33 那 领 受 他 见 证 的 ， 就 印 上 印 ， 证 明 神 是 真 的 。
34 神 所 差 来 的 就 说 神 的 话 ， 因 为 神 赐 圣 灵 给 他 是 没 有 限 量 的 。
35 父 爱 子 ， 已 将 万 有 交 在 他 手 里 。
36 信 子 的 人 有 永 生 ； 不 信 子 的 人 得 不 着 永 生 （ 原 文 作 不 得 见 永 生 ） ， 神 的 震 怒 常 在 他 身 上 。 」

3 他 就 离 了 犹 太 ， 又 往 加 利 利 去 。
4 必 须 经 过 撒 玛 利 亚 ，
5 於 是 到 了 撒 玛 利 亚 的 一 座 城 ， 名 叫 叙 加 ， 靠 近 雅 各 给 他 儿 子 约 瑟 的 那 块 地 。
6 在 那 里 有 雅 各 井 ； 耶 稣 因 走 路 困 乏 ， 就 坐 在 井 旁 。 那 时 约 有 午 正 。
7 有 一 个 撒 玛 利 亚 的 妇 人 来 打 水 。 耶 稣 对 他 说 ： 「 请 你 给 我 水 喝 。 」
8 （ 那 时 门 徒 进 城 买 食 物 去 了 。 〉
9 撒 玛 利 亚 的 妇 人 对 他 说 ： 「 你 既 是 犹 太 人 ， 怎 麽 向 我 一 个 撒 马 利 亚 妇 人 要 水 喝 呢 ？ 」 原 来 犹 太 人 和 撒 玛 利 亚 人 没 有 来 往 。
10 耶 稣 回 答 说 ： 「 你 若 知 道 神 的 恩 赐 ， 和 对 你 说 『 给 我 水 喝 』 的 是 谁 ， 你 必 早 求 他 ， 他 也 必 早 给 了 你 活 水 。 」
11 妇 人 说 ： 「 先 生 ， 没 有 打 水 的 器 具 ， 井 又 深 ， 你 从 那 里 得 活 水 呢 ？
12 我 们 的 祖 宗 雅 各 将 这 井 留 给 我 们 ， 他 自 己 和 儿 子 并 牲 畜 也 都 喝 这 井 里 的 水 ， 难 道 你 比 他 还 大 吗 ？ 」
13 耶 稣 回 答 说 ： 凡 喝 这 水 的 还 要 再 渴 ；
14 人 若 喝 我 所 赐 的 水 就 永 远 不 渴 。 我 所 赐 的 水 要 在 他 里 头 成 为 泉 源 ， 直 涌 到 永 生 。 」
15 妇 人 说 ： 「 先 生 ， 请 把 这 水 赐 给 我 ， 叫 我 不 渴 ， 也 不 用 来 这 麽 远 打 水 。 」
16 耶 稣 说 ： 「 你 去 叫 你 丈 夫 也 到 这 里 来 。 」
17 妇 人 说 ： 「 我 没 有 丈 夫 。 」 耶 稣 说 ： 「 你 说 没 有 丈 夫 是 不 错 的 。
18 你 已 经 有 五 个 丈 夫 ， 你 现 在 有 的 并 不 是 你 的 丈 夫 。 你 这 话 是 真 的 。 」
19 妇 人 说 ： 先 生 ， 我 看 出 你 是 先 知 。
20 我 们 的 祖 宗 在 这 山 上 礼 拜 ， 你 们 倒 说 ， 应 当 礼 拜 的 地 方 是 在 耶 路 撒 冷 。 」
21 耶 稣 说 ： 妇 人 ， 你 当 信 我 。 时 候 将 到 ， 你 们 拜 父 ， 也 不 在 这 山 上 ， 也 不 在 耶 路 撒 冷 。
22 你 们 所 拜 的 ， 你 们 不 知 道 ； 我 们 所 拜 的 ， 我 们 知 道 ， 因 为 救 恩 是 从 犹 太 人 出 来 的 。
23 时 候 将 到 ， 如 今 就 是 了 ， 那 真 正 拜 父 的 ， 要 用 心 灵 和 诚 实 拜 他 ， 因 为 父 要 这 样 的 人 拜 他 。
24 神 是 个 灵 （ 或 无 个 字 ） ， 所 以 拜 他 的 必 须 用 心 灵 和 诚 实 拜 他 。 」

28 那 妇 人 就 留 下 水 罐 子 ， 往 城 里 去 ， 对 众 人 说 ：
29 「 你 们 来 看 ！ 有 一 个 人 将 我 素 来 所 行 的 一 切 事 都 给 我 说 出 来 了 ， 莫 非 这 就 是 基 督 吗 ？ 」
30 众 人 就 出 城 ， 往 耶 稣 那 里 去 。
31 这 其 间 ， 门 徒 对 耶 稣 说 ： 「 拉 比 ， 请 吃 。 」
32 耶 稣 说 ： 「 我 有 食 物 吃 ， 是 你 们 不 知 道 的 。 」
33 门 徒 就 彼 此 对 问 说 ： 「 莫 非 有 人 拿 甚 麽 给 他 吃 吗 ？ 」
34 耶 稣 说 ： 「 我 的 食 物 就 是 遵 行 差 我 来 者 的 旨 意 ， 做 成 他 的 工 。
35 你 们 岂 不 说 『 到 收 割 的 时 候 还 有 四 个 月 』 吗 ？ 我 告 诉 你 们 ， 举 目 向 田 观 看 ， 庄 稼 已 经 熟 了 （ 原 文 是 发 白 ） ， 可 以 收 割 了 。
36 收 割 的 人 得 工 价 ， 积 蓄 五 谷 到 永 生 ， 叫 撒 种 的 和 收 割 的 一 同 快 乐 。
37 俗 语 说 ： ： 『 那 人 撒 种 ， 这 人 收 割 』 ， 这 话 可 见 是 真 的 。
38 我 差 你 们 去 收 你 们 所 没 有 劳 苦 的 ； 别 人 劳 苦 ， 你 们 享 受 他 们 所 劳 苦 的 。 」
39 那 城 里 有 好 些 撒 玛 利 亚 人 信 了 耶 稣 ， 因 为 那 妇 人 作 见 证 说 ： 「 他 将 我 素 来 所 行 的 一 切 事 都 给 我 说 出 来 了 。 」
40 於 是 撒 玛 利 亚 人 来 见 耶 稣 ， 求 他 在 他 们 那 里 住 下 ， 他 便 在 那 里 住 了 两 天 。
41 因 耶 稣 的 话 ， 信 的 人 就 更 多 了 ，
42 便 对 妇 人 说 ： 「 现 在 我 们 信 ， 不 是 因 为 你 的 话 ， 是 我 们 亲 自 听 见 了 ， 知 道 这 真 是 救 世 主 。 」
43 过 了 那 两 天 ， 耶 稣 离 了 那 地 方 ， 往 加 利 利 去 。
44 因 为 耶 稣 自 己 作 过 见 证 说 ： 「 先 知 在 本 地 是 没 有 人 尊 敬 的 。 」
45 到 了 加 利 利 ， 加 利 利 人 既 然 看 见 他 在 耶 路 撒 冷 过 节 所 行 的 一 切 事 ， 就 接 待 他 ， 因 为 他 们 也 是 上 去 过 节 。
46 耶 稣 又 到 了 加 利 利 的 迦 拿 ， 就 是 他 从 前 变 水 为 酒 的 地 方 。 有 一 个 大 臣 ， 他 的 儿 子 在 迦 百 农 患 病 。
47 他 听 见 耶 稣 从 犹 太 到 了 加 利 利 ， 就 来 见 他 ， 求 他 下 去 医 治 他 的 儿 子 ， 因 为 他 儿 子 快 要 死 了 。
48 耶 稣 就 对 他 说 ： 「 若 不 看 见 神 迹 奇 事 ， 你 们 总 是 不 信 。 」
49 那 大 臣 说 ： 「 先 生 ， 求 你 趁 着 我 的 孩 子 还 没 有 死 就 下 去 。 」
50 耶 稣 对 他 说 ： 「 回 去 吧 ， 你 的 儿 子 活 了 ！ 」 那 人 信 耶 稣 所 说 的 话 就 回 去 了 。
51 正 下 去 的 时 候 ， 他 的 仆 人 迎 见 他 ， 说 他 的 儿 子 活 了 。
52 他 就 问 甚 麽 时 候 见 好 的 。 他 们 说 ： 「 昨 日 未 时 热 就 退 了 。 」
53 他 便 知 道 这 正 是 耶 稣 对 他 说 「 你 儿 子 活 了 」 的 时 候 ； 他 自 己 和 全 家 就 都 信 了 。
54 这 是 耶 稣 在 加 利 利 行 的 第 二 件 神 迹 ， 是 他 从 犹 太 回 去 以 後 行 的 。

论重生
3 有一个法利赛人名叫尼哥德慕，是犹太人的官。 2 一天晚上，他来见耶稣，说：“老师，我们知道你是上帝差来教导人的，因为如果没有上帝的同在，没有人能行你所行的神迹。”
3 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你，人若不重生[a]，就不能看见上帝的国。”
4 尼哥德慕说：“人老了，怎能重生呢？难道要再进母腹生一次吗？”
5 耶稣说：“我实实在在地告诉你，人如果不是从水和圣灵生的，就不能进上帝的国。 6 从肉体生的还是肉体，从圣灵生的才是灵。 7 所以我说你们必须重生，你不要惊奇。 8 风随意吹动，你听见它的声音，却不知道它从哪里来，往哪里去。凡从圣灵生的人也是这样。”
9 尼哥德慕又问：“这怎么可能呢？”
10 耶稣说：“你是以色列人的教师，还不明白这事吗？ 11 我实实在在地告诉你，我们所说的是自己知道的，所见证的是自己见过的，可是你们不肯接受我们的见证。 12 我对你们说地上的事，你们尚且不信，要是说天上的事，你们怎么会信呢？ 13 除了从天上降下来的人子[b]以外，没有人到过天上。 14 摩西在旷野怎样举起铜蛇，人子也必照样被举起来， 15 叫一切信祂的人都得到永生。
16 “因为上帝爱世人，甚至将祂独一的儿子赐给他们，叫一切信祂的人不致灭亡，反得永生。 17 上帝差祂的儿子到世上来，不是要定世人的罪，而是要借着祂的儿子拯救世人。 18 信祂的人不会被定罪，不信的人已经被定罪，因为他们不信上帝独一的儿子。 19 光来到世上，世人因为自己的行为邪恶而不爱光，反爱黑暗，这就是他们被定罪的原因。 20 作恶的人恨光，不肯接近光，恐怕他们的罪行暴露出来。 21 但遵行真理的人喜欢接近光，好显明他所做的是靠上帝做的。”

22 这事之后，耶稣和门徒前往犹太地区，在那里住下来给人施洗。 23-24 那时约翰还没有入狱，他在靠近撒冷的哀嫩也给人施洗。那里水多，众人都去受洗。 25 约翰的门徒和一个犹太人为了洁净的礼仪争辩起来， 26 于是门徒来见约翰，说：“老师，你看，以前在约旦河对岸和你在一起、你为祂做见证的那位在给人施洗，众人都去祂那里了！”
27 约翰回答说：“除非是从天上赏赐下来的，否则人什么都得不到。 28 你们自己可以为我做见证，我说过我不是基督，我只是奉差在祂前面预备道路的。 29 娶新娘的是新郎，站在旁边的朋友听见新郎的声音，就会欢喜快乐。因此，我现在也心满意足了。 30 祂必兴旺，我必衰微。
31 “从天上来的，超越一切；从地上来的，属于地，他所谈论的也不外乎地上的事。那来自天上、超越万物的， 32 要把所见所闻讲给人听，只是没有人接受祂的见证。 33 但已经接受祂见证的人证实了上帝是真实的。 34 上帝所差来的，说的是上帝的话，因为上帝将圣灵无限量地赐给祂。 35 父爱子，已把万物交在祂手里。 36 信子的人有永生；不信子的人得不到永生，上帝的烈怒常在他身上。”
井边谈道
4 1-3 耶稣得知法利赛人听见祂收门徒、为人施洗比约翰还多，便离开犹太回加利利。其实不是耶稣亲自施洗，而是祂的门徒施洗。 4 祂回加利利的路上必须经过撒玛利亚。 5 于是，祂来到撒玛利亚的一座城，名叫叙加，靠近雅各留给他儿子约瑟的那块地。 6 雅各井就在那个地方。耶稣走路疲乏，坐在井旁休息。那时是中午时分， 7-8 门徒都进城买食物去了。有一个撒玛利亚的妇人来打水，耶稣说：“请你给我一点水吧。”
9 撒玛利亚妇人说：“你是个犹太人，怎么向我这撒玛利亚妇人要水喝？”原来犹太人和撒玛利亚人互不往来。
10 耶稣回答说：“要是你知道上帝的恩赐，又知道向你要水喝的是谁，你早就求祂了，祂也早就把活水给你了。”
11 妇人说：“先生，你没有打水的器具，井又深，你从哪里得到活水呢？ 12 我们的祖先雅各把这口井留给我们，他自己和他的儿女、牲畜都喝这井里的水，难道你比他更伟大吗？”
13 耶稣说：“人喝了这井里的水，还会再渴， 14 但是喝了我所赐的活水，永远不会再渴。我所赐的水要在他里面成为生命的泉源，涌流不息，直到永生。”
15 妇人说：“先生，请你把这种水赐给我，我就不会再渴了，也用不着来打水了。”
16 耶稣说：“去叫你的丈夫来。”
17 妇人说：“我没有丈夫。”耶稣说：“你说的对，你没有丈夫， 18 因为你已经有过五个丈夫了，现在和你同居的也不是你的丈夫。你说的是实话。”
19 妇人说：“先生，你一定是先知。 20 我们的祖先一向都是在这山上敬拜上帝，你们却说耶路撒冷才是敬拜的地方。”
21 耶稣回答说：“妇人，你当信我。时候快到了，你们将不在这山上，也不在耶路撒冷敬拜父。 22 你们不知道你们敬拜的是谁，我们知道我们敬拜的是谁，因为救恩是从犹太人出来的。 23 时候快到了，其实就是现在，真正敬拜父的，要用心灵按真理敬拜祂，因为父寻找的正是这样敬拜祂的人。 24 上帝是灵，所以必须用心灵按真理敬拜祂。”
25 妇人说：“据我所知，那被称为基督的弥赛亚要来。祂来了，会把一切都告诉我们。”
26 耶稣说：“我这跟你说话的人就是祂。”
27 这时，门徒回来了，看见耶稣和一个妇人谈话，感到惊奇，可是没有人问：“你想要什么？”或问：“你为什么和她说话？”
28 那妇人撇下水罐，回到城里，对人们说： 29 “你们快来看啊！有一个人把我过去的事全部说了出来。莫非祂就是基督？” 30 众人听了就到城外去看耶稣。
撒种与收割
31 其间，门徒对耶稣说：“老师，请吃点东西吧。”
32 耶稣说：“我有食物吃，是你们不知道的。”
33 门徒彼此议论说：“难道有人给祂吃的了？”
34 耶稣说：“我的食物就是遵行差我来者的旨意，完成祂的工作。 35 你们不是说还有四个月才到收割的时候吗？举目向田观看吧，庄稼已经熟了，可以收割了。 36 收割的人不但可以得到报酬，而且可以为永生收获果实，叫撒种的和收割的一同快乐。 37 俗语说得好，‘那人撒种，这人收割。’ 38 我派你们去收割那些你们没有劳作的庄稼，别人劳苦，你们享受他们劳苦的成果。”
39 那城里有许多撒玛利亚人信了耶稣，因为那妇人做见证说：“祂将我以前做的一切事情都说了出来。” 40 撒玛利亚人来见耶稣，恳求祂留下来，祂就在那里住了两天。 41 因为耶稣传的道，信的人更多了。 42 他们对那妇人说：“现在我们信，不再是因为你的话，而是我们亲耳听见了，知道祂真的是救世主。”
耶稣治好大臣的儿子
43 两天后，耶稣动身前往加利利。 44 祂以前说过：“先知在他本乡不受人尊敬。” 45 然而，祂回到加利利却受到当地的人欢迎，因为他们上耶路撒冷过节时，看见了祂所做的一切。
46 祂又到了加利利的迦拿，就是祂从前把水变成酒的地方。有一个大臣的儿子在迦百农患了病。 47 大臣听说耶稣从犹太来到加利利，立刻赶来见祂，求祂去医治他病危的儿子。
48 耶稣对他说：“你们不看见神迹奇事，总不相信。”
49 大臣说：“先生，趁我的孩子还没死，求你赶快去！”
50 耶稣说：“回去吧，你的儿子好了。”他相信耶稣的话，就回去了。
51 他途中遇见奴仆来报信说他儿子好了， 52 就问什么时候好的。仆人说：“昨天下午一点钟，烧就退了。”
53 他想起正是那时候耶稣对他说：“你的儿子好了！”他和全家都信了。
54 这是耶稣从犹太回到加利利后所行的第二个神迹。

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus(A) who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.(B) 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,(C) we know(D) that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs(E) you are doing if God were not with him.”(F)
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”(G)
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.(H) 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit.(I) 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d](J)
9 “How can this be?”(K) Nicodemus asked.
10 “You are Israel’s teacher,”(L) said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,(M) and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.(N) 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven(O) except the one who came from heaven(P)—the Son of Man.[e](Q) 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,(R) so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f](S) 15 that everyone who believes(T) may have eternal life in him.”[g](U)
16 For God so loved(V) the world that he gave(W) his one and only Son,(X) that whoever believes(Y) in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(Z) 17 For God did not send his Son into the world(AA) to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.(AB) 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned,(AC) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.(AD) 19 This is the verdict: Light(AE) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.(AF) 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.(AG) 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John Testifies Again About Jesus
22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.(AH) 23 Now John(AI) also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)(AJ) 25 An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.(AK) 26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,(AL) that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified(AM) about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
27 To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’(AN) 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom.(AO) The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.(AP) 30 He must become greater; I must become less.”[h]
31 The one who comes from above(AQ) is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.(AR) The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard,(AS) but no one accepts his testimony.(AT) 33 Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34 For the one whom God has sent(AU) speaks the words of God, for God[i] gives the Spirit(AV) without limit. 35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.(AW) 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,(AX) but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman
4 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John(AY)— 2 although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3 So he left Judea(AZ) and went back once more to Galilee.
4 Now he had to go through Samaria.(BA) 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(BB) 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”(BC) 8 (His disciples had gone into the town(BD) to buy food.)
9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(BE) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[j])
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”(BF)
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(BG) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(BH) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(BI) welling up to eternal life.”(BJ)
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(BK) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.(BL) 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(BM) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”(BN)
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming(BO) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(BP) 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(BQ) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(BR) 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come(BS) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(BT) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit,(BU) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)(BV) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”(BW)
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27 Just then his disciples returned(BX) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(BY) Could this be the Messiah?”(BZ) 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi,(CA) eat something.”
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat(CB) that you know nothing about.”
33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will(CC) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(CD) 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(CE) 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(CF) a crop for eternal life,(CG) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’(CH) is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
Many Samaritans Believe
39 Many of the Samaritans from that town(CI) believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”(CJ) 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41 And because of his words many more became believers.
42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”(CK)
Jesus Heals an Official’s Son
43 After the two days(CL) he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(CM) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(CN) for they also had been there.
46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(CO) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(CP) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,”(CQ) Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”
The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”
53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household(CR) believed.
54 This was the second sign(CS) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
