¹⁹ This is the verdict: Light^(A) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.^{(B) 20} Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.^(C)

²² Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,^{(A) 23} that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.^(B)

⁶ Therefore Jesus told them, “My time^(A) is not yet here; for you any time will do. ⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me^(B) because I testify that its works are evil.^{(C) 8} You go to the festival. I am not^[a] going up to this festival, because my time^(D) has not yet fully come.”

The World Hates the Disciples

¹⁸ “If the world hates you,^(A) keep in mind that it hated me first.

²³ Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works no one else did,^(A) they would not be guilty of sin.^(B) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:^(C) ‘They hated me without reason.’^[a](D)
