¹⁴ And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,^(A)

⁷ The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.^{(A) 8} And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a poisonous^[a] serpent, and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” ⁹ So Moses made a serpent of bronze and put it upon a pole, and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.^(B)

²⁸ So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I am he^[a] and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak these things as the Father instructed me.^(A)

³² And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people^[a] to myself.”^{(A) 33} He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die. ³⁴ The crowd answered him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah^[b] remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”^(B)

²⁶ Was it not necessary that the Messiah^[a] should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?”^{(A) 27} Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.^(B)

⁴⁴ Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.”^{(A) 45} Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, ⁴⁶ and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah^[a] is^[b] to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day^(B)

⁵⁴ But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way?”^(A)

²³ this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law.^(A)
