You Must Be Born Again

3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named ^(A)Nicodemus, ^(B)a ruler of the Jews. ² This man came to Jesus^{[a] (C)}by night and said to him, ^(D)“Rabbi, ^(E)we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do ^(F)unless God is with him.” ³ Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is ^(G)born ^(H)again^[b] he cannot ^(I)see the kingdom of God.” ⁴ Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” ⁵ Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born ^(J)of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

⁹ Nicodemus said to him, ^(A)“How can these things be?” ¹⁰ Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel ^(B)and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(C)we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but ^(D)you^[a] do not receive our testimony. ¹² If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

³ while ^(A)Moses went up to God. ^(B)The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: ^4 (C)‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how ^(D)I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. ⁵ Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be ^(E)my treasured possession among all peoples, for ^(F)all the earth is mine; ⁶ and you shall be to me a ^(G)kingdom of priests and ^(H)a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

⁴ They are ^(A)Israelites, and to them belong ^(B)the adoption, ^(C)the glory, ^(D)the covenants, ^(E)the giving of the law, ^(F)the worship, and ^(G)the promises. ⁵ To them belong ^(H)the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, ^(I)who is God over all, ^(J)blessed forever. Amen.
