You Must Be Born Again

3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named ^(A)Nicodemus, ^(B)a ruler of the Jews. ² This man came to Jesus^{[a] (C)}by night and said to him, ^(D)“Rabbi, ^(E)we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do ^(F)unless God is with him.”

Division Among the People

⁴⁰ When they heard these words, ^(A)some of the people said, “This really is ^(B)the Prophet.” ⁴¹ Others said, “This is ^(C)the Christ.” But some said, ^(D)“Is the Christ to come from Galilee? ⁴² Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes ^(E)from the offspring of David, and comes ^(F)from Bethlehem, the village ^(G)where David was?” ⁴³ So there was ^(H)a division among the people over him. ^44 (I)Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

¹³ They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. ^14 (A)Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. ^15 (B)So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” ¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not ^(C)from God, ^(D)for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, ^(E)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And ^(F)there was a division among them.
