John 21:20-23

New International Version

²⁰Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved^(A) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)^(B) ²¹When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

²²Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return,^(C) what is that to you? You must follow me.”^(D) ²³Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers^(E) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

²⁰Peter turned around and *saw the ^(A)disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had ^(B)leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” ²¹So Peter, upon seeing him, *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” ²²Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain ^(C)until I come, what is that to you? You ^(D)follow Me!” ²³Therefore this ^[a]account went out among ^(E)the brothers, that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain ^(F)until I come, what is that to you?”
