Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee
21 After these things Jesus [a](A)revealed Himself (B)again to the disciples at the (C)Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way: 2 Simon Peter, (D)Thomas who was called [b]Didymus, (E)Nathanael of (F)Cana in Galilee, (G)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and (H)that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not (I)know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus *said to them, “Children, (J)you do not have any fish to eat, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “(K)Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find the fish.” So they cast it, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great quantity of fish. 7 (L)Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about [c]two hundred cubits away, dragging the net full of fish.
9 So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal (M)fire already [d]made and (N)fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the (O)fish which you have now caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went up and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus Provides
12 Jesus *said to them, “Come and have (P)breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to inquire of Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus *came and *took (Q)the bread and *gave it to them, and the (R)fish likewise. 14 This was now the (S)third time that Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
The Love Question
15 Now when they had (T)finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you [e](U)love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [f]love You.” He *said to him, “Tend (V)My lambs.” 16 He *said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you [g]love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [h]love You.” He *said to him, “(W)Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you [i]love Me?” Peter was [j]hurt because He said to him (X)the third time, “Do you [k]love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, (Y)You know all things; You know that I [l]love You.” Jesus *said to him, “(Z)Tend My sheep.
Our Times Are in His Hand
18 Truly, truly I tell you, when you were younger, you used to put on your belt and walk wherever you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put your belt on you, and bring you where you do not want to go.” 19 Now He said this, (AA)indicating by (AB)what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had said this, He *said to him, “(AC)Follow Me!”
20 Peter turned around and *saw the (AD)disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had (AE)leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” 21 So Peter, upon seeing him, *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain (AF)until I come, what is that to you? You (AG)follow Me!” 23 Therefore this [m]account went out among (AH)the brothers, that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain (AI)until I come, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who (AJ)is testifying about these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
25 But there are also (AK)many other things which Jesus did, which, if they were written in detail, I expect that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish
21 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples,(A) by the Sea of Galilee.[a](B) It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas(C) (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael(D) from Cana in Galilee,(E) the sons of Zebedee,(F) and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.(G)
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.(H)
5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
“No,” they answered.
6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.(I)
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved(J) said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[c] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire(K) of burning coals there with fish on it,(L) and some bread.
10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.(M) 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples(N) after he was raised from the dead.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”(O)
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”(P)
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”(Q)
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”(R) He said, “Lord, you know all things;(S) you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.(T) 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(U) by which Peter would glorify God.(V) Then he said to him, “Follow me!”(W)
20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(X) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)(Y) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return,(Z) what is that to you? You must follow me.”(AA) 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers(AB) that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things(AC) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.(AD)
25 Jesus did many other things as well.(AE) If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee
21 After this Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias (Galilee). And He did it in this way: 2 Simon Peter, and Thomas who is called Didymus (the twin), and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, as well as [John and James] the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said, “And we are coming with you.” So they went out and got into the boat; and [a]that night they caught nothing.
4 As morning was breaking, Jesus [came and] stood on the beach; however, the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish [to eat along with your bread]?” They answered, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat (starboard) and you will find some.” So they cast [the net], and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great catch of fish. 7 Then that disciple (John) whom Jesus loved (esteemed) said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer tunic (for he was stripped for work) and threw himself into the sea [and swam ashore]. 8 But the other disciples came in the small boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish.
9 So when they got out on the beach, they saw a charcoal fire set up and fish on it cooking, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three [of them]; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus Provides
12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You?” They knew [without any doubt] that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples, after He had risen from the dead.
The Love Motivation
15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these [others do—with total commitment and devotion]?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [b]love You [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend].” Jesus said to him, “Feed My lambs.” 16 Again He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me [with total commitment and devotion]?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend].” Jesus said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me [with a deep, personal affection for Me, as for a close friend]?” Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time, “Do you [really] [c]love Me [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend]?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know everything; You know that I love You [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend].” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.
Our Times Are in His Hand
18 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and walked wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and arms, and someone else will dress you, and carry you where you do not wish to go.” 19 Now He said this to indicate the [d]kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And after saying this, He said to him, “Follow Me [walk the same path of life that I have walked]!”
20 Peter turned and saw the [e]disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His chest at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray You?” 21 So when Peter saw him, he asked Jesus, “Lord, and what about this [f]man [what is in his future]?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I want him to stay alive until I come [again], what is that to you? You follow Me!” 23 So this word went out among the brothers that this disciple (John) was not going to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not going to die, but only, “If I want him to stay alive until I come [again], what is that to you?”
24 This is the same [g]disciple who is testifying to these things and has recorded them; and we know [without any doubt] that his testimony is true.
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were recorded [h]one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

- John 21:3 Fishing at night was commonplace and normally productive.
- John 21:15 As indicated by the amplifications, Peter uses a different Greek word for love (phileo) than Jesus does (agapao) in His first two questions to Peter (see note v 17).
- John 21:17 This time Jesus uses the same word for love that Peter previously used twice (phileo).
- John 21:19 Peter ministered some thirty years after the resurrection of Jesus. He was martyred in Rome by Emperor Nero in about a.d. 67. The Roman historian, Eusebius said that Peter was crucified upside down at his own request.
- John 21:20 John the Apostle. The mothers of Jesus and John, Mary and Salome, were related as sisters.
- John 21:21 It is believed that John was the only apostle to die of natural causes. He lived to the age of ninety-four and died in about a.d. 100.

21 Depois disso, manifestou-se Jesus outra vez aos discípulos, junto ao mar de Tiberíades; e manifestou-se assim: 2 estavam juntos Simão Pedro, e Tomé, chamado Dídimo, e Natanael, que era de Caná da Galileia, e os filhos de Zebedeu, e outros dois dos seus discípulos. 3 Disse-lhes Simão Pedro: Vou pescar. Disseram-lhe eles: Também nós vamos contigo. Foram, e subiram logo para o barco, e naquela noite nada apanharam.
4 E, sendo já manhã, Jesus se apresentou na praia, mas os discípulos não conheceram que era Jesus. 5 Disse-lhes, pois, Jesus: Filhos, tendes alguma coisa de comer? E, dito isso, disse-lhe: Segue-me. 20 E Pedro, voltando-se, viu que o seguia aquele discípulo a quem Jesus amava, e que na ceia se recostara também sobre o seu peito, e que dissera: Senhor, quem é que te há de trair? 21 Vendo Pedro a este, disse a Jesus: Senhor, e deste que será? 22 Disse-lhe Jesus: Se eu quero que ele fique até que eu venha, que te importa a ti? Segue-me tu. 23 Divulgou-se, pois, entre os irmãos o dito de que aquele discípulo não havia de morrer. Jesus, porém, não lhe disse que não morreria, mas: Se eu quero que ele fique até que eu venha, que te importa a ti?
24 Este é o discípulo que testifica dessas coisas e as escreveu; e sabemos que o seu testemunho é verdadeiro.
25 Há, porém, ainda muitas outras coisas que Jesus fez; e, se cada uma das quais fosse escrita, cuido que nem ainda o mundo todo poderia conter os livros que se escrevessem. Amém!

Jesus e a Pesca Maravilhosa
21 Depois disso Jesus apareceu novamente aos seus discípulos, à margem do mar de Tiberíades[a]. Foi assim: 2 Estavam juntos Simão Pedro; Tomé, chamado Dídimo; Natanael, de Caná da Galiléia; os filhos de Zebedeu; e dois outros discípulos. 3 “Vou pescar”, disse-lhes Simão Pedro. E eles disseram: “Nós vamos com você”. Eles foram e entraram no barco, mas naquela noite não pegaram nada.
4 Ao amanhecer, Jesus estava na praia, mas os discípulos não o reconheceram.
5 Ele lhes perguntou: “Filhos, vocês têm algo para comer?”
Eles responderam que não.
6 Ele disse: “Lancem a rede do lado direito do barco e vocês encontrarão”. Eles a lançaram, e não conseguiam recolher a rede, tal era a quantidade de peixes.
7 O discípulo a quem Jesus amava disse a Pedro: “É o Senhor!” Simão Pedro, ouvindo-o dizer isso, vestiu a capa, pois a havia tirado, e lançou-se ao mar. 8 Os outros discípulos vieram no barco, arrastando a rede cheia de peixes, pois estavam apenas a cerca de noventa metros[b] da praia. 9 Quando desembarcaram, viram ali uma fogueira, peixe sobre brasas, e um pouco de pão.
10 Disse-lhes Jesus: “Tragam alguns dos peixes que acabaram de pescar”.
11 Simão Pedro entrou no barco e arrastou a rede para a praia. Ela estava cheia: tinha cento e cinqüenta e três grandes peixes. Embora houvesse tantos peixes, a rede não se rompeu. 12 Jesus lhes disse: “Venham comer”.[c] Nenhum dos discípulos tinha coragem de lhe perguntar: “Quem és tu?” Sabiam que era o Senhor. 13 Jesus aproximou-se, tomou o pão e o deu a eles, fazendo o mesmo com o peixe. 14 Esta foi a terceira vez que Jesus apareceu aos seus discípulos, depois que ressuscitou dos mortos.
Jesus Restaura Pedro
15 Depois de comerem, Jesus perguntou a Simão Pedro: “Simão, filho de João, você me ama mais do que estes?”
Disse ele: “Sim, Senhor, tu sabes que te amo”.
Disse Jesus: “Cuide dos meus cordeiros”.
16 Novamente Jesus disse: “Simão, filho de João, você me ama?”
Ele respondeu: “Sim, Senhor, tu sabes que te amo”.
Disse Jesus: “Pastoreie as minhas ovelhas”.
17 Pela terceira vez, ele lhe disse: “Simão, filho de João, você me ama?”
Pedro ficou magoado por Jesus lhe ter perguntado pela terceira vez “Você me ama?” e lhe disse: “Senhor, tu sabes todas as coisas e sabes que te amo”.
Disse-lhe Jesus: “Cuide das minhas ovelhas. 18 Digo-lhe a verdade: Quando você era mais jovem, vestia-se e ia para onde queria; mas quando for velho, estenderá as mãos e outra pessoa o vestirá e o levará para onde você não deseja ir”. 19 Jesus disse isso para indicar o tipo de morte com a qual Pedro iria glorificar a Deus. E então lhe disse: “Siga-me!”
20 Pedro voltou-se e viu que o discípulo a quem Jesus amava os seguia. (Este era o que estivera ao lado de Jesus durante a ceia e perguntara: “Senhor, quem te irá trair?”) 21 Quando Pedro o viu, perguntou: “Senhor, e quanto a ele?”
22 Respondeu Jesus: “Se eu quiser que ele permaneça vivo até que eu volte, o que lhe importa? Quanto a você, siga-me!”. 23 Foi por isso que se espalhou entre os irmãos o rumor de que aquele discípulo não iria morrer. Mas Jesus não disse que ele não iria morrer; apenas disse: “Se eu quiser que ele permaneça vivo até que eu volte, o que lhe importa?”
24 Este é o discípulo que dá testemunho dessas coisas e que as registrou. Sabemos que o seu testemunho é verdadeiro.
25 Jesus fez também muitas outras coisas. Se cada uma delas fosse escrita, penso que nem mesmo no mundo inteiro haveria espaço suficiente para os livros que seriam escritos.
