Jesus and the Beloved Disciple

²⁰ Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?”^(A)

⁷ That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he had taken it off, and jumped into the sea.^(A)

² So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”^(A)

²⁴ This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.^(A)

²³ One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining close to his heart;^{[a](A) 24} Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. ²⁵ So while reclining next to Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”^{(B) 26} Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.”^[b] So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.^[c](C)
