The Empty Tomb
20 (A)Now on the first day of the week (B)Mary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and *saw (C)the stone already removed from the tomb. 2 So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other (D)disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “(E)They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.” 3 (F)So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. 4 The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first; 5 and he (G)stooped to look in, and *saw the (H)linen wrappings lying there; however he did not go in. 6 So Simon Peter also *came, following him, and he entered the tomb; and he *looked at the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and (I)the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the (J)linen wrappings but folded up in a place by itself. 8 So the other disciple who (K)had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. 9 For (L)they did not yet understand the Scripture, (M)that He must rise from the dead. 10 So the disciples went away again (N)to their own homes.
11 (O)But Mary was standing outside the tomb, weeping; so as she wept, she (P)stooped to look into the tomb; 12 and she *saw (Q)two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they *said to her, “(R)Woman, why are you weeping?” She *said to them, “Because (S)they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they put Him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and *(T)saw Jesus standing there, and yet she (U)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus *said to her, “(V)Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Thinking that He was the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you put Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him (W)in [a]Hebrew, “(X)Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17 Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to (Y)My brothers and say to them, ‘I am (Z)ascending to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” 18 (AA)Mary Magdalene *came and (AB)announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.
Jesus among His Disciples
19 Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were [b]shut where the disciples were together due to (AC)fear of the [c]Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and *said to them, “(AD)Peace be to you.” 20 And when He had said this, (AE)He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then (AF)rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “(AG)Peace be to you; (AH)just as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (AI)If you forgive the sins of any, their sins [d]have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
24 But (AJ)Thomas, one of (AK)the twelve, who was called [e](AL)Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in (AM)His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, (AN)I will not believe.”
26 [f]Eight days later His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been [g]shut, and stood in their midst and said, “(AO)Peace be to you.” 27 Then He *said to Thomas, “(AP)Place your finger here, and see My hands; and take your hand and put it into My side; and do not continue in disbelief, but be a believer.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you now believed? (AQ)Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”
Why This Gospel Was Written
30 (AR)So then, many other [h](AS)signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written (AT)so that you may believe that Jesus is the [i]Christ, (AU)the Son of God; and that by (AV)believing you may have life in His name.
Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee
21 After these things Jesus [j](AW)revealed Himself (AX)again to the disciples at the (AY)Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way: 2 Simon Peter, (AZ)Thomas who was called [k]Didymus, (BA)Nathanael of (BB)Cana in Galilee, (BC)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter *said to them, “I am going fishing.” They *said to him, “We are also coming with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and (BD)that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not (BE)know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus *said to them, “Children, (BF)you do not have any fish to eat, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “(BG)Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you will find the fish.” So they cast it, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great quantity of fish. 7 (BH)Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about [l]two hundred cubits away, dragging the net full of fish.
9 So when they got out on the land, they *saw a charcoal (BI)fire already [m]made and (BJ)fish placed on it, and bread. 10 Jesus *said to them, “Bring some of the (BK)fish which you have now caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went up and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.
Jesus Provides
12 Jesus *said to them, “Come and have (BL)breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to inquire of Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus *came and *took (BM)the bread and *gave it to them, and the (BN)fish likewise. 14 This was now the (BO)third time that Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.
The Love Question
15 Now when they had (BP)finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you [n](BQ)love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [o]love You.” He *said to him, “Tend (BR)My lambs.” 16 He *said to him again, a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you [p]love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [q]love You.” He *said to him, “(BS)Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you [r]love Me?” Peter was [s]hurt because He said to him (BT)the third time, “Do you [t]love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, (BU)You know all things; You know that I [u]love You.” Jesus *said to him, “(BV)Tend My sheep.
Our Times Are in His Hand
18 Truly, truly I tell you, when you were younger, you used to put on your belt and walk wherever you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put your belt on you, and bring you where you do not want to go.” 19 Now He said this, (BW)indicating by (BX)what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had said this, He *said to him, “(BY)Follow Me!”
20 Peter turned around and *saw the (BZ)disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had (CA)leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” 21 So Peter, upon seeing him, *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain (CB)until I come, what is that to you? You (CC)follow Me!” 23 Therefore this [v]account went out among (CD)the brothers, that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain (CE)until I come, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who (CF)is testifying about these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
25 But there are also (CG)many other things which Jesus did, which, if they were written in detail, I expect that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.

The Empty Tomb(A)
20 Now the (B)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the (C)stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the (D)other disciple, (E)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
3 (F)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. 5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw (G)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and (H)the [a]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 8 Then the (I)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they did not [b]know the (J)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
11 (K)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
14 (L)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and (M)did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
16 Jesus said to her, (N)“Mary!”
She turned and said to [c]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet (O)ascended to My Father; but go to (P)My brethren and say to them, (Q)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to (R)My God and your God.’ ”
18 (S)Mary Magdalene came and told the [d]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
The Apostles Commissioned(T)
19 (U)Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were [e]assembled, for (V)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, (W)“Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He (X)showed them His hands and His side. (Y)Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! (Z)As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 (AA)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Seeing and Believing
24 Now Thomas, (AB)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and (AC)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be (AD)unbelieving, but believing.”
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, [f]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. (AE)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
That You May Believe
30 And (AF)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (AG)but these are written that (AH)you may believe that Jesus (AI)is the Christ, the Son of God, (AJ)and that believing you may have life in His name.
Breakfast by the Sea
21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the (AK)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: 2 Simon Peter, (AL)Thomas called the Twin, (AM)Nathanael of (AN)Cana in Galilee, (AO)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”
They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [g]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (AP)did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then (AQ)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”
They answered Him, “No.”
6 And He said to them, (AR)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.
7 Therefore (AS)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”
11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, (AT)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.
14 This is now (AU)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.
Jesus Restores Peter
15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [h]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [i]love You.”
He said to him, (AV)“Feed My lambs.”
16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [j]Jonah, do you love Me?”
He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [k]love You.”
(AW)He said to him, “Tend My (AX)sheep.”
17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [l]Jonah, do you [m]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”
And he said to Him, “Lord, (AY)You know all things; You know that I love You.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 (AZ)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying (BA)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, (BB)“Follow Me.”
The Beloved Disciple and His Book
20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple (BC)whom Jesus loved following, (BD)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”
22 Jesus said to him, “If I [n]will that he remain (BE)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”
23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who (BF)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.
25 (BG)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, (BH)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
