Jesus and Thomas

24 Now (A)Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,[a] was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, (B)“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. (C)Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, (D)“Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, (E)“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, (F)“My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? (G)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of This Book

30 (H)Now Jesus did many other signs (I)in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 (J)but these are written so that you may (K)believe that Jesus is the Christ, (L)the Son of God, and that by believing (M)you may have life (N)in his name.

Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples

21 After this Jesus (O)revealed himself (P)again to the disciples by (Q)the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, (R)Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of (S)Cana in Galilee, (T)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but (U)that night they caught nothing.

Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples (V)did not know that it was Jesus. (W)Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” (X)He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple (Y)whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, (Z)he put on his outer garment, for he was (AA)stripped for work, and (AB)threw himself into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards[b] off.

When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, (AC)“Come and (AD)have breakfast.” Now (AE)none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and (AF)took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 (AG)This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus and Peter

15 When they had (AH)finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, (AI)“Simon, (AJ)son of John, (AK)do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed (AL)my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, (AM)“Tend (AN)my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him (AO)the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, (AP)you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed (AQ)my sheep. 18 (AR)Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, (AS)you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show (AT)by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, (AU)“Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

20 Peter turned and saw (AV)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, (AW)the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain (AX)until (AY)I come, what is that to you? (AZ)You follow me!” 23 So the saying spread abroad among (BA)the brothers[c] that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple (BB)who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and (BC)we know (BD)that his testimony is true.

25 Now (BE)there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that (BF)the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

In the first book, O (BG)Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began (BH)to do and teach, until the day when (BI)he was taken up, after he (BJ)had given commands (BK)through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. (BL)He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

And while staying[d] with them (BM)he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for (BN)John baptized with water, (BO)but you will be baptized (BP)with[e] the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The Ascension

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, (BQ)will you at this time (BR)restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, (BS)“It is not for you to know (BT)times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive (BU)power (BV)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and (BW)you will be (BX)my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and (BY)Samaria, and (BZ)to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, (CA)he was lifted up, and (CB)a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, (CC)two (CD)men stood by them in (CE)white robes, 11 and said, (CF)“Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, (CG)will (CH)come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

12 Then (CI)they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to (CJ)the upper room, where they were staying, (CK)Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon (CL)the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these (CM)with one accord (CN)were devoting themselves to prayer, together with (CO)the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and (CP)his brothers.[f]

15 In those days Peter stood up among (CQ)the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 “Brothers, (CR)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (CS)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For (CT)he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in (CU)this ministry.” 18 (Now this man (CV)acquired a field with (CW)the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong[g] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called (CX)in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,

(CY)“‘May his camp become desolate,
    and let there be no one to dwell in it’;

and

(CZ)“‘Let another take his office.’

21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during (DA)all the time that the Lord Jesus (DB)went in and out among us, 22 (DC)beginning from the baptism of John until the day when (DD)he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us (DE)a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called (DF)Barsabbas, who was also called (DG)Justus, and (DH)Matthias. 24 And (DI)they prayed and said, “You, Lord, (DJ)who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in (DK)this ministry and (DL)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

When (DM)the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like (DN)a mighty rushing wind, and (DO)it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues (DP)as of fire appeared to them and rested[h] on each one of them. And they were all (DQ)filled with the Holy Spirit and began (DR)to speak in other tongues (DS)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And (DT)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And (DU)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking (DV)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and (DW)Medes and (DX)Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and (DY)proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And (DZ)all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others (EA)mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
