²¹ Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!^(A) As the Father has sent me,^(B) I am sending you.”^{(C) 22} And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.^{(D) 23} If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”^(E)

²⁹ Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;^(A) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”^(B)

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

³⁰ Jesus performed many other signs^(C) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.^{(D) 31} But these are written that you may believe^[a](E) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,^(F) and that by believing you may have life in his name.^(G)

Jesus Reinstates Peter

¹⁵ When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”^(A)

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”^(B)

¹⁶ Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”^(C)

¹⁷ The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”^(D) He said, “Lord, you know all things;^(E) you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.^(F)
