²⁰ After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.^(A) The disciples were overjoyed^(B) when they saw the Lord.

²⁷ Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”^(A)

²⁸ As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. ²⁹ But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

³⁰ When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it^(A) and began to give it to them. ³¹ Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him,^(B) and he disappeared from their sight. ³² They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us^(C) while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures^(D) to us?”

Jesus Predicts His Death^(A)

³¹ He then began to teach them that the Son of Man^(B) must suffer many things^(C) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,^(D) and that he must be killed^(E) and after three days^(F) rise again.^(G)

³¹ because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man^(A) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him,^(B) and after three days^(C) he will rise.”^(D)
