² So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,^(A) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”^(B)

²³ One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,^(A) was reclining next to him.

¹³ They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”^(A)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”^(B)

²⁴ This is the disciple who testifies to these things^(A) and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.^(B)

⁷ Then the disciple whom Jesus loved^(A) said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.

²⁶ When Jesus saw his mother^(A) there, and the disciple whom he loved^(B) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,^[a] here is your son,”

²⁰ Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved^(A) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)^(B)

¹⁵ He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?^(A) Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

⁹ (They still did not understand from Scripture^(A) that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)^(B)

⁶³ “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’^{(A) 64} So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body^(B) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
