John 20:19-23

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

¹⁹On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,^(A) Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace^(B) be with you!”^(C) ²⁰After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.^(D) The disciples were overjoyed^(E) when they saw the Lord.

²¹Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!^(F) As the Father has sent me,^(G) I am sending you.”^(H) ²²And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.^(I) ²³If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”^(J)

John Testifies About Jesus

²⁹The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,^(A) who takes away the sin of the world!^(B) ³⁰This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’^(C) ³¹I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

³²Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.^(D) ³³And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water^(E) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’^(F) ³⁴I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”^[a]^(G)
