Jesus Clears the Temple Courts^(A)

¹³ When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,^(B) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.^(C)

5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.

⁴ The Jewish Passover Festival^(A) was near.

²⁸ Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.^(B) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,^(C) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.^(D)

¹⁰ And the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate^(A) them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes^{(B) 11} and be ready by the third day,^(C) because on that day the Lord will come down^(D) on Mount Sinai^(E) in the sight of all the people.

¹⁵ Then he said to the people, “Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain^(A) from sexual relations.”

⁶ But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean^(A) on account of a dead body.^(B) So they came to Moses and Aaron^(C) that same day ⁷ and said to Moses, “We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the Lord’s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?^(D)”

⁸ Moses answered them, “Wait until I find out what the Lord commands concerning you.”^(E)

⁹ Then the Lord said to Moses, ¹⁰ “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body^(F) or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate^(G) the Lord’s Passover, ¹¹ but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month^(H) at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.^{(I) 12} They must not leave any of it till morning^(J) or break any of its bones.^(K) When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations.^{(L) 13} But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people^(M) for not presenting the Lord’s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.

¹⁴ “‘A foreigner^(N) residing among you is also to celebrate the Lord’s Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.’”

¹² They must purify themselves with the water on the third day and on the seventh day;^(A) then they will be clean. But if they do not purify themselves on the third and seventh days, they will not be clean.^(B)

⁶ except in the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name. There you must sacrifice the Passover in the evening, when the sun goes down, on the anniversary^[a](A) of your departure from Egypt.
