³ All things ·were made [were created; came to be] ·by [through] him, and nothing ·was made [came to be] without him [Prov. 8:22–31]. ⁴ ·In him there was life [or What was made through him was life], and that life was the light of all people. ⁵ The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not ·overpowered [defeated; or understood; comprehended] it.
